Pedro signs one-year deal with Phils

POSTED: Tuesday, July 14, 2009, 6:27 PM

The Phillies have signed free agent pitcher Pedro Martinez to a one-year deal, according to a person with direct knowledge of the transaction.  An announcement is expected tomorrow.

The pitcher, 37, underwent a physical today at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia conducted by team medical staff. Though the Phillies would not officially comment tonight on the physical, several people in Martinez’s camp indicated that it went well. The contract, sources say, will be a one-year deal worth about $1 million. Martinez can make another $1.5 million based on incentives.

A Internet report this evening said that Martinez had passed his physical. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. offered only a “no comment” when asked about that news. The team would be highly unlikely to announce a signing on the day of the All-Star Game, a move that would risk upstaging the event.

If I hear more, I'll tweet and blog it.

Fan_in_Jerusalem "or all of you who don't mind the phils paying 1 million for Fat Pedro, I can throw the ball from the mound to the plate, too. THink the phils will pay me a million to pitch batting practice to the other team DURING the game? That's what we just did." Do you also have a career 214-99 record? Are you just a couple seasons removed from a 15-win season as the #1 pitcher for a playoff-contending team? Did you anchor a World Series winning staff 5 years ago? Are you a sure-fire first ballot Hall of Fame pitcher with the 2 best seasons in baseball history under your belt? No? Then STFU.

His arm looked good on the few throws they showed on TV. You have to let the Phils scouting staff have its opinion and run with it. They are the World champs and they deserve that much.

Where's the guy who scoffed at me when I said they would have to give up a maxmimum of 5 million to get Pedro. 1 million I was way off

PhilliesPhan53 *** The Phils will keep Pedro in the minors for about a month, but in the mean time the smart thing would be to show case Lopez and see if there is any interest. If Martinez works out than the biggest problem we have is the bench and it wouldn't be beyond belief for them to trade Lopez for a right hand bat. Notice I didn't say HR hitter.

Like I said sign him with conditions, don't break the bank, and put him in the minors. Watch his progress closely and if he can bring it than september is gonna be fun we just replaced Myers. Now the question is what to do about Hamels lack of production and are we willing to chance another ride on Hamels back to the finals. Thank goodness Amaro has stated publicly now that the Phils do have "some untouchables" in the minors, they are not willing to sell the farm for one man and they are keeping their options open. Good to hear Rubin is able to keep things in perspective.

I figure he has a sore shoulder by throwing twice in a week to impress ML teams. If the Phillies are not worried, I'm ok with it.

el zorro., A lot of teams do this, they have to place players on the DL when they pick them up and dont want them to pitch right away.. he will not be signing a minor league contract therefore he has to be placed on the DL or they would have to send someone down.. he will make a start by the end of the weekend in the minors.. they just have to put a reason for the DL so they say mild strain.. he threw 100 pitches the other day hitting 93 and 94 he is fine..

Murph just posted the info. But here it is anyway. Wednesday, July 15, 2009 PHILLIES SIGN PEDRO MARTINEZ Free agent right-hander Pedro Martinez has signed a major league contract with the Phillies, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. Martinez will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a mild right shoulder strain. It has not been determined when or where he will start a rehabilitation assignment...

According to a report, he will be put in the 15 DL. Then he will go on a rehab assigment.

El Z: I think they said that so he could "rehab" with LV to get into game shape since he hasn't pitched in games in awhile. Probably won't start until August (according to Ken Rosenthal)

Funny before the season started he said he'd rather retire than be disrespected and sign a contract like Tom Glavine did with the Braves. Glavine signed for $1 mil with incentives.

In my opinion, this is kind of like a fifty-fifty. If he does well, fine. If he doesn't, we will have lost Lopez on waivers since we can't send him to the minors. Then we are left with Carpenter and Kendrick. Now that is a one-two punch if I ever saw one.

It sure is easy to be negative. The Phils brass not the fans from the internet carefully checked Pedro out. They were impressed. Would it not seem that they know what they're doing by signing him?

You people are unreal..Moyer flat out stinks,he cannot be in any post season rotation against a patient team. Pedro is pocket change, some concession money from 1 night. He has more movement than anyone we currently have, wake up idiots he played for the stinkin Mets. Thats why he sucked, that team is in oblivion. Imagine going to work every day in NY. Have a freakin open mind for a change!

I don't see how people can be upset by this. Is he better than Lopez? Hell yes! Park? Hell yes! Carpenter? Hell yes! Bastardo? Yes! Drabek is not coming up this year and Bastardo is too raw. For 2.5 mil at the most, it's a steal! Now go get Roy!

cnova000, anybody who follows the Phils most likely follows baseball in general,(especially philly fans)...no one is excepting the Pedro of old, that just wont happen...but again, it's a low risk, high reward signing...the Phils along w/ a few other teams watched him pitch, and liked what they saw. notice I said a few other teams...now, I don't have inside info. or anything, but it sure seemed that Pedro had other options, but he chose Philly...I do agree that getting Roy would be the best thing, we'll see if it happens...gotta go, Rauuuuuul is up to bat!!!

Please STOP with the Halladay talk! Giving up the future for a starting pitcher works out every tenth year. Bring up some new guys from the minors. I love the Pedro signing. A great gamble for a cheap price. Get behind him Philly!!!

Some of you people clearly haven't been watching much baseball outside of Phillies games. Pedro has been saying these same lines every year for the last 3 or 4 years. Feeling better than ever and all that nonsense. He can't get out of the 4th inning once the first few starts go by. The bullpen is just getting rest again, and Pedro will blow it. Thanks but no thanks. I'd rather take my chances with Rodrigo Lopez and J.A. Happ. Roy is worth taking at the right price, but remember Phils fans, this team won without getting CC Sabathia last year, and CC stunk in the playoffs against us. Roy is no sure thing on a new team, and he's never been tested in the playoffs, or in a real baseball market. But still, rather Roy than Pedro, at the right price.

Yep...I like this, I didnt when I heard they were going after him, but they arent spending any REAL money here. He will spend a few weeks in the minors to get his body ready and then he will come up and pitch 6-10 games. If he wins half of them the money will be worth it. AND the big thing is we can still go after Halladay and a bat off the bench because we wouldnt have spent a HUGE amount of money.

I like the signing IF they still get Halladay or another 1 o2 starter. Pedro will bring his pitching experience, and as a # 5 starter, how bad can he be. Low risk, high reward.

I LOVE it. There isn't much downside here. If he stinks, they cut him lose. And, while he certainly isn't what he used to be, I think it's very exciting that a living legend/once-in-a-generation pitcher will be on this team....even if in the twilight of his career. He didn't have quite the longevity of say a Clemens or Maddux--but at his peak, he was truly extraordinary. Look at his 1999 season...in the AL...in the "steroid era"....that is TRULY amazing stuff. I realize he's not CLOSE to the same pitcher as he was TEN years ago...obviously--but it's still cool to have this man on the team. If he gives us anything, he will be a HUGE fan favorite at CBP.

only a mill? c'mon on now haters, this a no brainer...the downside is that he is indeed finished & the Phils leave him in the minors or just cut him, & move on...the upside is the Phils are a getting a highly competitive teammate who will put it all on the line for his team & he winds up becoming an effective 5th starter...this will NOT hinder any other moves the Phils need to make; ie. BP help, bench help, etc...the World F**King Champs just got a tad bit more exciting today...GO PHILLIES!!!

OK, so what happens to Lopez, Antonio, and Drew and Kyle that many wanted to see at least a few times in the spot? If Pedro pitches 6 innings each time, he will be a success as long as he doesn't get bombed and can keep the team in the game.
