Oswalt leaves with lower back tightness

POSTED: Thursday, June 23, 2011, 9:21 PM

It was clear that something was wrong with Roy Oswalt.

The Phillies righthander has struggled the entire season with a variety of issues, including a back injury, a loss of velocity and an inability to locate his pitches. Thanks to those problems, he went into his start Thursday in St. Louis with a 1-3 record and 4.81 ERA in June.

Things got worse on this night for Oswalt as he departed after just two innings because of more back pain. He allowed four runs on five hits and appeared to be in some discomfort as the Cardinals scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning.

The Phillies announced that Oswalt left with lower back tightness and that's a bad sign for a man who has had back problems in recent years.

We'll update after the game.

that is why you dont trade any of your starters because someone will get hurt.

It was pretty obvious during the 1st inning when he was falling further off the 1st baase side of the mound on every pitch and limping noticeably walking back to the dugout after the 3rd out.

I like it how fans rail on him for going home to the south to be with his family instead of rehabbing his back. *Sarcasm*

That's what sitting on a backhoe when you have a back problem will do to you. When (If) he comes back, trade him. His heart isn't in it, and he's become the weak link.

Sounds like that option won't be exercised.

DL him until September and then get him geared up for the playoffs. He always looks like he's 1 pitch away from the DL. Rest him and try to squeeze the last few drops of gas he has left in the tank. He always speaks as if he's close to hanging up the spikes and theres no way the phils pick up that option next year. Anything you get from him at this point is a bonus.

Won't be back next year and that's a good thing. He's got a no trade clause, so he's not getting traded, but RAJ won't pick up an option that will cost the team 15 mil for a bad back. Thanks for 2 good months in 2010.

Oswalt is no surprise. He gets hurt all the time and is unreliable. RAJ has bigger problems with Danys Baez. He is worthless and continues to hurt the team. RAJ needs to release Contrares and trade Oswalt. While we have the fab 3 (Hamels, Halliday & Lee) the offense will keep this group of underachievers from going deep into the playoffs. Don't be surprised when this happens. Please get rid of Baez Rube, it is painful to watch this guy pitch. He would be a welcome addition to the Riversharks.
