O's prospect Schoop could be target of Phillies interest
Bob Brookover, Inquirer Baseball Columnist
There is a report from MASNSports.com's Roch Kubatko that the Baltimore Orioles have asked the Phillies to fax righthander Joe Blanton's medical records, a sign that the two sides could be near completing a trade.
A baseball source indicated that the player the Phillies want in return for Blanton is infielder Jon Schoop, the Orioles' third-ranked prospect, according to Baseball America.
Schoop, a 20-year-old righthanded hitter from Curacao, has played this season at double-A Bowie in the Eastern League.
Through Sunday's games, he was hitting .244 with 17 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs and 43 RBIs. Schoop, 6-foor-1 and 195 pounds, has played primarily at second base this season, but has also played shortstop and third base.
Landing Baltimore's No. 3 prospect for Blanton would be a nice score, but the Phillies may have to eat some of Blanton's remaining salary in order to do so. Blanton, in the final year of a deal that is paying him $8.5 million this season, will make a little less than $3 million the remainder of the year. The Orioles apparently do not want to take on all of Blanton's salary.
- Make the trade and pay all of Blanton's salary if needed! Hopefully they can get another player who is closer to major league ready. mrfitz77
- Hey time for Joe to go and I wish him the best and thank him for the world series championship he was a part of. Ill always remember that homerun he cranked off of Edwin jackson in Game 4. Thanks Joe!
hipdaddy - The GM in Baltimore will be run out of the business if he gives up Schoop in a deal for two months of Joe B. There is no way this rumor is correct, even if the Phils do eat all of Blanton's remaining contract. If Schoop is on the table, the Phils must be talking about including someone with Blanton.
phillyl0
Good stuff, make it happen. Sad to see Big Joe go, but it has to be done. I am sure Phils can eat 2/3rds of the remaining salary. Schoop might be Utley's replacement as he has only played 23 games at 3rd base. ESFjellin

Bob was a little late with the news. LOL. EL Zorro
do the deal OldCoach
This comment has been deleted. Quixote II- Don't just read the headline. Look him up. He is 20 years old just promoted to AA after hitting .319 at low A with close to 20hr pop then .277 at high A. Of course at 20 he is going to struggle at first at AA. He could be a steal and ready to play after next year when Utley is gone.
- I'm a baseball fan, but can't say I know anything about this guy. But, as Eagles said, I looked him up and his stats aren't awful. He's got a fair amount of homers for a 20 year old 2nd baseman in AA.
And Quixote, I've read your comments for Philly.com and out of every 100 comments, I say that 99 of them are critical of either the writers, players, managers, coaches. You flat out don't have a nice thing to say about anybody. It's america and free speech and all, so go ahead and knock yourself type away. But, man, it must be tough to go through life with you being so smart and everyone you comment about being so stupid. CMattyG - Amen to every word of that, Matty.
This guy has ripped Blanton for years telling us how awful he is, now he rips RAJ for not getting more for him.
Be thankful you do not go through life like he does.
Sorry to see Joe go, he was much underated. Except for 1 season you could count on him going out every 5th day, giving us close to 200 innings, he always ran out every grounder, and he never complained once.

Big Joe is a class act, he will be sorely missed. Be a big score if this is true..Go Phillies!!! TexasYankee
A much better deal would be Blanton and Pierre to the Orioles for Machado. onthebucks
I'm not big on Blanton, but who wants a .244 (in double A) hitter? They need to get something better than that for a starting pitcher. djlen- get a clue. he's a #4 starting pitcher with a 4.59 ERA and who is only under contract for this year. what exactly do you think you're going to get for him, genius??
I have a hard time believing the Os are giving up a good prospect for Blanton, but if he really is certainly worth eating the rest of Blanton's contract if needed. Phils certainly waste more money than that on their current contracts. lazyboy
Schoop is a nice player but predominantly a second baseman. In the Phils haste to retool, they should not forget about Freddy Galvis. I still like a Blanton and Pierre for Machado deal better. onthebucks
Gonna miss Joe. He's a nice guy who did his best. Andrewsgvl
If you want to know if she loves you so, it's in her kiss....that's where it is! drbob1- ”You can tell [Schoop] was a shortstop coming up because he’s rangy and has the hands [to play short],” Delmarva Manager Ryan Minor said Tuesday after a 7-3 loss to the Nationals’ South Atlantic League affiliate at Hagerstown, Md. “We moved him to third because we think he’ll fill out a little bit and hit with some power.”
Wow! A .244 hitter in the minors for a number 4-5 BIG league starter.Looks like we hit the iceberg.. philsfansince1946
Do some homework before you comment. The kid is a high upside bat (shows good power already) who projects as a good 3B. May outgrow middle IF. Rangy build- If that's true this trade makes sense--the Phillies must think this kid can play third in 2013. They MUST win in 2013 if they're going to win again because after 2013 Halladay and Utley are gone after that point. Schoop at the ML minimum gives them money to sign one or two big FA outfielders.
Onthebucks, no way they are trading Machado. This Schoop guy has size and BA project shim to outgrow the middle infield and become a 3rd basemen. Either way, he would immediately become the best position prospect in the Phils org. You guys need to learn about value. More than a fair deal. craigmack
246? Yegads, bring Polly back! ngfs66- On the bucks-who the hell are you kidding? The O's are not trading Bundy or Machado for ANYONE, least of all a 4/5 starter who will be a rental. Get a clue please. Good lord.
Who takes Blanton's spot?
Joe at the shore- Kendrick
scootch - Chase Utley High A avg .257 at 21, next year .263 at AAA following year .323. Your way overating AVG in the minors.
A step in the right direction. wo_fat
As Cole said at the press conference last year - Joe's the only one with a WS homer. .244 ain't that great and the other stats are poorly relayed. OPS? SLG? RISP? why do we always have to go find this for ourselves? And why are these guys alwas reporting someoneelse's news? ez_ed
Make it. Anything we get for Joe is a bonus. He would not be offered a contract for next year anyway. With the Phils race over, it is time to jetti anyone who won't be in the plans next year and anyone who can fill two holes for the price of one. Next year is so iffy anyway. Face it. We are rebuilding. A good utility player with some pop is a plus return. gotedge
Blanton has been solid. People love trades but prospects are unproven. You might never here of them again. hawk18- .292 vs Lefties in AA
That would be a good move, in my opinion. You have to try and look where this Schoop dude would project out in a couple of years. Raw power is a commodity that doesn't grow on trees and apparently this kid has some. You have to be realistic when trading, that and sometimes you have to get a little lucky. I think this would be a good start in the right direction. Maybe the kid could start out at 3b and then shift over to 2b if/when Chase is done/traded/whatever. BigAfromBucks
I still would've taken the deal two seasons ago to Dunkin' Donuts for a large coffee and a Boston Creme Doughnut. . . Tarik S. Khan
Thanks Joe for trying your best. You "fans" are brutal. You Loved him for helping us getting a World Series and even hit a home run. Some Hated him for getting hurt even though he tried to pitched through it. MooseBreathMints
I seriously doubt the Orioles would give up Schoop for Blanton. I wouldn't be surprised if Big Joe ends up in Baltimore, but I expect the return to be insignificant. Schoop is actually a pretty good prospect. Stringer Bell
https://twitter.com/JonHeymanCBS/status/230107813962190849
As expected, Orioles turned down the trade. Phils were never going to get a top 100 prospect for a 4th starter rental. AlbionHero
None of this matters as long as Charlie moron is still on the payroll any young kid coming to the Phils is DOA gates2012- So we're going to get a #3 "maybe" player for an established major league starting pitcher, which we're going to have to play to play for another team also?? What an idiotic deal! "Prospects" are "suspects" until proven otherwise. These guys that ranked this Baltimore minor leaguer #3 in the Oriole organization are of the same mentality as the guys who ranked Domonic Brown a "5-tool phenom." A "phenom" who has had repeated trouble clearing the Triple A hurdle. We should be getting established major leaguers for an established major leaguer.
Joe's chip value for a gamble on a #3 prospect seems a reasonable bet. escapedcamden4monterey
I agree, get rid of blast em out the park Blanton for this Schoop doggy dog dude! Halladay is next, i think hes washed up, i never thought id say that but, it is what it is! huntnmike3666
If they can get Schoop, that's great. All you could ask for for a rental. BUT....the Phils need the payroll relief to get under the cap....no way they cover all $3 mil of Bluto's salary...... Mark1npt
dont know why they wanna get rid of him so fast...... he is alot cheaper to resign and he is not a bad pitcher at all. pr0f3ss0r
Quixote ll you can't be serious. This guy is highly regarded. He is the 3rd rated prospect in their farm system. Most experts feel he will be a major league second basemen. He is at the most, only one year away. He is not a good prospect, heis a very good prospect who has room to grow on a 195lb. frame. GOLDY2007
A blanton in the hand is worth two in the bush. This not a good trade. phoenix phlash
Blanton is pitching well right now so he should help the O's. Wish we could get a little better prospect but I really don't know this player and he is a 2nd base, 3rd base possibility so it makes sense. JamesSeitz- As I posted earlier, the trade was turned down by the Orioles, so we aren't getting him. If the Orioles were to accept this trade, it would have been one of the worst trades of the last few years, since Schoop is a highly touted prospect. If we still trade Blanton, we'll probably get a B level prospect at best... 3rd/4th rotation rentals aren't really highly desirable so its tough to get much value.
AlbionHero
Lets see, we got, High roller Hammels,Halladay on a holiday,General Lee getn ambushed at little big horn, blast em out Blanton, wheres waldo Worley, and no Ks for Kendrick. And dont get me started on the relievers...geesh!!! huntnmike3666
CMattyG, Regarding your comment about Quixote: SPOT ON!!! That guy must have been rejected for a job at the Inquirer or DN in the past - Shows in his bitter posts constantly criticizing the writing styles of *blogs*. Sheesh. Warbiscuit is another negative fool, too.
philly2sf
Hitting .244 in Double A ball. Nice. Just what we need. scootch
The Phils aren't going to eat all of Blanton's contract. The point of making these trades is to get under the luxury tax. If they have to eat the contract, then that's not accomplishing anything. JimG
I think I'd do this if I were the Phillies. Stats for Schoop aren't great but it sounds like he might have some upside and he plays at positions that the Phillies desperately need. Give him a year or two under Manuel and he'll have that average down to .220 with 5 doubles and 2 HRs. AvoidSundanceVacations
Mlbtraderumors.com is already saying the O's won't trade Schoop for Blanton so everyone's carping about this deal seems to be for nothing. Steve Jeltz
Got to move Blanton to make room for Cloyd. Since there is no way he gets resigned and we don't need him for anything the next two months, you take the best prospect you can get and move on. wo_fat
If it's true that the O's won't do the trade, that means we're batting .000. Less than 24 hours to the trade deadline, and we haven't moved anybody. nmlawyer
Blanton and Pierre for Machado makes a lot more sense than Blanton for Schoop. On top of everything else, the Orioles want the Phils to pay Blanton's salary. Blanton is a healthy starter who is pitching well. Pierre is one of the hardest working and most intelligent players in baseball, and currently a .300 hitter. Machado and Schoop are relative unknowns. Past performance in the minors does not guarantee success in the majors. Schoop makes little sense on a team that already has Freddy Galvis. Machado makes a little more sense. Blanton and Pierre for Machado is generous. In fact, I hope the Phils trade him elsewhere. Blanton to the Blue Jays for prospects to include Travis d'Arnaud would be a much better deal. Some of you guys talk like you understand the difference between minor and major league performance, as well as the true value of a starting pitcher. It's obvious you don't. I hope Amaro has more sense than you guys and sticks to a game plan that includes the Phils abject refusal to give away players for nothing in return. onthebucks- Joe's pretty much a rental to both sides of the table at this point.
escapedcamden4monterey
Onthebucks...Os aren't giving up Machado. He's their #2 prospect and #3 overall in baseball according to Keith Law. Giving up #4 pitcher and #4 OF doesn't get you in the top 25 for prospects unless RAJ is buying. The only reason Schoop is the O's #3 prospect is because the two guys ahead of him are Dylan Bundy (#2 overall) and Machado. Despite a weak farm system, Schoop has tools to play 3B and projects to have some power. Remember Joe Jordan came from the Os system. Not surprised 1st trade of firesale is with the Os. PhillyinBmore
This trade my come back to bite. Why does it always seem we trade pitchers who are on the cusp of moving it to the next level? Moving Kendrik or Worly oiled have made more sense. DameB
onthebucks---THE ORIOLES ARE NOT TRADING MANNY MACHADO OR DYLAN BUNDY. Get that through your thick skull. regassert6
There are multiple teams in on Blanton. Saying the Orioles #3 prospect is a second baseman with the tools to play third and currently hitting .244 in Double A doesn't say an aweful lot about the Orioles farm system. A healthy starting pitcher and .300 hitting outfielder are going to do more to get the Orioles in to the playoffs this year than a minor league shortstop with a lot of potential but no guarantees. Blanton and Pierre for Machado is more than fair. Blanton plus his salary for Schoop makes less sense than the Phils jus keeping Blanton for the rest of the season. I sincerely hope Amaro stands his ground and trades Blanton elsewhere. I'm sure he'll be able to get more than Schoop for Blanton from another team. onthebucks- You really think you're going to get a top 100 prospect from someone else for Blanton? This offer was just the Phillies making unrealistic demands to see if the Orioles would bite. Its pretty much a non story, since teams ask for unrealistic demands all the time until they get down to a more fair offer for both sides. It'll probably end up something closer to a Robert Andino or LJ Hoes if they get the deal done.
AlbionHero
The Orioles aren't going to be trading a future Troy Tulowitzki for two average rental players. AlbionHero
regassed, I never said the Orioles would trade Bundy or Machado. What I said was Blanton and Pierre for Machado was a better trade than Blanton plus salary for Schoop. The Orioles may not have to worry about trading any of these guys because other teams are still in on Blanton. I'd like to see him going to the Blue Jays and Travis d'Arnaud back in a Phillies uniform. onthebucks
By the way, what is a bullpen "piece"? Is that like a bullpen pitcher? wo_fat
clueless rube will get nothing of value for anyone --teams are laughing at the moron, knowing he needs to do a salary dump and they are ofering the trash collector useless trash warbiscuit
Blanton has no value to the Phils over the next 2 months. You have to deal him. onthebucks, you have no concept of player value, please stop talking, there is no way to get top 25 prospects for expiring slop. craigmack
Onthebucks, since you're proposing trades that make more sense for the Phil's, why stop at Blanton and Pierre for Machado? Why don't we throw in our other rental garbage like Wigginton, Nix, and Contreras in the trade and maybe the Orioles will throw in Bundy too? That would make it an even better trade for the Phils.
Idiot. hairball- Buffet Joe--Stay or Go? drunk13
hairballs, I never proposed any trades. I simply said Blanton plus salary for Schoop was not a fair trade, but Blanton and Pierre for Machado was fairer. I personally don't think the Orioles have as much to offer the Phils as other teams, and hope the Phils trade Blanton elsewhere. Also, you'd do well not calling people you don't know unflattering names. Someone who can't read, like yourself, isn't really in any position to cast dispersions. onthebucks
craig, how do you know how much concept of player value I have? You're clueless as to who I am and what I do. And for the record, top prospect lists are as useful in baseball as lists of the greatest movies ever made are in video stores. Is Citizen Kane really the greatest movie ever produced? I think not. Do you think the most recent list of Top 25 Phillie prospects is really accurate. For the Phils sake, I hope not. Such lists are artificial devices that have very little validity or correlation with future success. So, if this is the best you can offer this board, maybe you are the one who should stop talking. Obviously, I won't. onthebucks
No bucks, you're the one scampering around trying to weasel out of your ridiculous statement. You modified your position to now imply you never proposed the trade, even though everyone else read it as such. Now you're taking the position you are only giving out a fairer trade. There are billions of fairer trades out there but why bring ANY up unless it was possible in your mind?
Dope.
hairball
Onthebucks' idea of a useful post: "I propose to trade Brian Schneider for Mike Trout because it is a better trade for the Phillies. I don't think this trade will happen, but it would be a good trade for the Phillies. I can think up many more of these trades even though everyone knows they won't happen." hairball
I have zero confidence that rube the boob won't get fleeced by other GMs that are 10x more competent than he is. The phillies are going to have so many holes next year (3B, LF, CF, bullpen) it's hard to see them as serious contenders. I would hate to see Lee go but if you can fill some of these holes I guess you have to do it. subgen
Trading Manny Machado to the Phil's for two rentals, much less a 4th starter and a journeyman OF would get DD fired... lol
Also, the Orioles farm system is underrated. Without mentioning the top three, they have some good hitting minor leaguers in Delmonico, Hoes and Avery. They still have some attractive pitching in Eduardo Rodriguez, Miguel Chalas and Ryan Berry.... others to look at include Ryan Adams, Ty Kelly and Glynn Davis. whatss
CBSsports.com is reporting the Orioles are balking at trading Schoop for Blanton. However, anything you get for Big Joe is a bonus. He wasn't going to get us draft compensation unless RAJ offers him a $12.5 million contract next year and he declines it. He's not worth $12.5 mil and no way he declines, IMO. Nevertheless, there is not much pitching out there so his value could be higher than what we thought. He has been pitching pretty well lately. Teams are inquiring about Garza, who is on the DL. And remember, the Orioles gave us big value for Thome in Kyle Simons, a 6-5, 21 year old RH reliever currently pitching pretty impressive in Clearwater (3-0, 1.26 ERA, 14 K in 14 inn, 0.767 WHIP. He also pitched 3 scoreless innings with Reading) and 19 year old catcher Gabriel Lino. Who knows, they could get desperate come the deadline and change their minds about not including Schoop. Also, Joe Jordan used to work for the Orioles. I guess he had a lot to do in stealing Simons from them for a player with little value to the Phillies. EL Zorro
I'll preface by saying that I try to follow the top 50 prospects very closely. Machado and Profar are the two best SS prospects in all of baseball. I've read some scouts say Machado compares to Hanley Ramirez. That being said, Machado for Blanton and Pierre is far from being fair. If the O's were willing to trade Machado (which they said they won't) they would probably want an ace #1 pitcher and more. To give up a top 5 prospect for a #4 pitcher and a journeyman OF is laughable. danejarus
34&27 as 5th starter, he did his job dwilly
If a trade were consummated involving Schoop, it would be a major score. Scouted as a complete 5 tool player, his presence in Phillie's organization would be a significant upgrade!!! Hard to believe this is a real deal. leecee
I like that this kid Schoop is from Curacao. We've seen some decent MLB players from there recently -- Andruw Jones, Jair Jurrjens (before he got hurt), that kid Andrelton Simmons, Roger Bernadina, the flame-throwing Kenley Jansen. A lot of baseball talent for a population of under 150,000. Dave Clemens
Why would Baltimore do that? That's the equivalent of what the Mets got for Beltran last year. jtj06
depends why we're making the deal. If we're trying to get under he cap, then paying his salary doens't help. If we're out to restock for next year, then fore 3 millioin + a good #4/5 SP we should be getting a player ready to play in sow next year jeff gross
Well, looks like the deal fell through. Figrued there was no way they would give up a top prospect for a journeyman pitcher. If bobo was smart he would get rid of him for whatever he can get, but he's not overly smart. lazyboy
Split the salary 50-50. Ih Baltimore signs Blanton next year Phillies get their 50% back. But in baseball term a million hear and a million there is pocket change if Baltimore gets a starting pitcher for next year and goes to playoffs this year,
Blanton can be a third starter in a ball bark that suits his tendency to not give up the long ball as Oakland did. martyhenry
Best of luck to Joe if he does move on! JBinPA
