O's prospect Schoop could be target of Phillies interest
Bob Brookover, Inquirer Baseball Columnist
There is a report from MASNSports.com's Roch Kubatko that the Baltimore Orioles have asked the Phillies to fax righthander Joe Blanton's medical records, a sign that the two sides could be near completing a trade.
A baseball source indicated that the player the Phillies want in return for Blanton is infielder Jon Schoop, the Orioles' third-ranked prospect, according to Baseball America.
Schoop, a 20-year-old righthanded hitter from Curacao, has played this season at double-A Bowie in the Eastern League.
Through Sunday's games, he was hitting .244 with 17 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs and 43 RBIs. Schoop, 6-foor-1 and 195 pounds, has played primarily at second base this season, but has also played shortstop and third base.
Landing Baltimore's No. 3 prospect for Blanton would be a nice score, but the Phillies may have to eat some of Blanton's remaining salary in order to do so. Blanton, in the final year of a deal that is paying him $8.5 million this season, will make a little less than $3 million the remainder of the year. The Orioles apparently do not want to take on all of Blanton's salary.
I have a hard time believing the Os are giving up a good prospect for Blanton, but if he really is certainly worth eating the rest of Blanton's contract if needed. Phils certainly waste more money than that on their current contracts. lazyboy
Schoop is a nice player but predominantly a second baseman. In the Phils haste to retool, they should not forget about Freddy Galvis. I still like a Blanton and Pierre for Machado deal better. onthebucks
Gonna miss Joe. He's a nice guy who did his best. Andrewsgvl
If you want to know if she loves you so, it's in her kiss....that's where it is! drbob1- ”You can tell [Schoop] was a shortstop coming up because he’s rangy and has the hands [to play short],” Delmarva Manager Ryan Minor said Tuesday after a 7-3 loss to the Nationals’ South Atlantic League affiliate at Hagerstown, Md. “We moved him to third because we think he’ll fill out a little bit and hit with some power.”
Wow! A .244 hitter in the minors for a number 4-5 BIG league starter.Looks like we hit the iceberg.. philsfansince1946
Do some homework before you comment. The kid is a high upside bat (shows good power already) who projects as a good 3B. May outgrow middle IF. Rangy build- If that's true this trade makes sense--the Phillies must think this kid can play third in 2013. They MUST win in 2013 if they're going to win again because after 2013 Halladay and Utley are gone after that point. Schoop at the ML minimum gives them money to sign one or two big FA outfielders.
Onthebucks, no way they are trading Machado. This Schoop guy has size and BA project shim to outgrow the middle infield and become a 3rd basemen. Either way, he would immediately become the best position prospect in the Phils org. You guys need to learn about value. More than a fair deal. craigmack
246? Yegads, bring Polly back! ngfs66- On the bucks-who the hell are you kidding? The O's are not trading Bundy or Machado for ANYONE, least of all a 4/5 starter who will be a rental. Get a clue please. Good lord.
Who takes Blanton's spot?
Joe at the shore- Kendrick
scootch - Chase Utley High A avg .257 at 21, next year .263 at AAA following year .323. Your way overating AVG in the minors.
A step in the right direction. wo_fat
