O's prospect Schoop could be target of Phillies interest

POSTED: Monday, July 30, 2012, 7:31 PM

There is a report from MASNSports.com's Roch Kubatko that the Baltimore Orioles have asked the Phillies to fax righthander Joe Blanton's medical records, a sign that the two sides could be near completing a trade.

A baseball source indicated that the player the Phillies want in return for Blanton is infielder Jon Schoop, the Orioles' third-ranked prospect, according to Baseball America.

Schoop, a 20-year-old righthanded hitter from Curacao, has played this season at double-A Bowie in the Eastern League.

Through Sunday's games, he was hitting .244 with 17 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs and 43 RBIs. Schoop, 6-foor-1 and 195 pounds, has played primarily at second base this season, but has also played shortstop and third base.

Landing Baltimore's No. 3 prospect for Blanton would be a nice score, but the Phillies may have to eat some of Blanton's remaining salary in order to do so. Blanton, in the final year of a deal that is paying him $8.5 million this season, will make a little less than $3 million the remainder of the year. The Orioles apparently do not want to take on all of Blanton's salary.

As Cole said at the press conference last year - Joe's the only one with a WS homer. .244 ain't that great and the other stats are poorly relayed. OPS? SLG? RISP? why do we always have to go find this for ourselves? And why are these guys alwas reporting someoneelse's news?

Make it. Anything we get for Joe is a bonus. He would not be offered a contract for next year anyway. With the Phils race over, it is time to jetti anyone who won't be in the plans next year and anyone who can fill two holes for the price of one. Next year is so iffy anyway. Face it. We are rebuilding. A good utility player with some pop is a plus return.

Blanton has been solid. People love trades but prospects are unproven. You might never here of them again.

That would be a good move, in my opinion. You have to try and look where this Schoop dude would project out in a couple of years. Raw power is a commodity that doesn't grow on trees and apparently this kid has some. You have to be realistic when trading, that and sometimes you have to get a little lucky. I think this would be a good start in the right direction. Maybe the kid could start out at 3b and then shift over to 2b if/when Chase is done/traded/whatever.

I still would've taken the deal two seasons ago to Dunkin' Donuts for a large coffee and a Boston Creme Doughnut. . .

Thanks Joe for trying your best. You "fans" are brutal. You Loved him for helping us getting a World Series and even hit a home run. Some Hated him for getting hurt even though he tried to pitched through it.

I seriously doubt the Orioles would give up Schoop for Blanton. I wouldn't be surprised if Big Joe ends up in Baltimore, but I expect the return to be insignificant. Schoop is actually a pretty good prospect.

As expected, Orioles turned down the trade. Phils were never going to get a top 100 prospect for a 4th starter rental.

So we're going to get a #3 "maybe" player for an established major league starting pitcher, which we're going to have to play to play for another team also?? What an idiotic deal! "Prospects" are "suspects" until proven otherwise. These guys that ranked this Baltimore minor leaguer #3 in the Oriole organization are of the same mentality as the guys who ranked Domonic Brown a "5-tool phenom." A "phenom" who has had repeated trouble clearing the Triple A hurdle. We should be getting established major leaguers for an established major leaguer.

Joe's chip value for a gamble on a #3 prospect seems a reasonable bet.

If they can get Schoop, that's great. All you could ask for for a rental. BUT....the Phils need the payroll relief to get under the cap....no way they cover all $3 mil of Bluto's salary......
