O's prospect Schoop could be target of Phillies interest

There is a report from MASNSports.com's Roch Kubatko that the Baltimore Orioles have asked the Phillies to fax righthander Joe Blanton's medical records, a sign that the two sides could be near completing a trade.
A baseball source indicated that the player the Phillies want in return for Blanton is infielder Jon Schoop, the Orioles' third-ranked prospect, according to Baseball America.
Schoop, a 20-year-old righthanded hitter from Curacao, has played this season at double-A Bowie in the Eastern League.
Through Sunday's games, he was hitting .244 with 17 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs and 43 RBIs. Schoop, 6-foor-1 and 195 pounds, has played primarily at second base this season, but has also played shortstop and third base.
Landing Baltimore's No. 3 prospect for Blanton would be a nice score, but the Phillies may have to eat some of Blanton's remaining salary in order to do so. Blanton, in the final year of a deal that is paying him $8.5 million this season, will make a little less than $3 million the remainder of the year. The Orioles apparently do not want to take on all of Blanton's salary.
- Make the trade and pay all of Blanton's salary if needed! Hopefully they can get another player who is closer to major league ready. mrfitz77
- Hey time for Joe to go and I wish him the best and thank him for the world series championship he was a part of. Ill always remember that homerun he cranked off of Edwin jackson in Game 4. Thanks Joe!
hipdaddy - The GM in Baltimore will be run out of the business if he gives up Schoop in a deal for two months of Joe B. There is no way this rumor is correct, even if the Phils do eat all of Blanton's remaining contract. If Schoop is on the table, the Phils must be talking about including someone with Blanton.

Good stuff, make it happen. Sad to see Big Joe go, but it has to be done. I am sure Phils can eat 2/3rds of the remaining salary. Schoop might be Utley's replacement as he has only played 23 games at 3rd base. ESFjellin

Bob was a little late with the news. LOL. EL Zorro
do the deal OldCoach
This comment has been deleted. Quixote II- Don't just read the headline. Look him up. He is 20 years old just promoted to AA after hitting .319 at low A with close to 20hr pop then .277 at high A. Of course at 20 he is going to struggle at first at AA. He could be a steal and ready to play after next year when Utley is gone.
- I'm a baseball fan, but can't say I know anything about this guy. But, as Eagles said, I looked him up and his stats aren't awful. He's got a fair amount of homers for a 20 year old 2nd baseman in AA.
And Quixote, I've read your comments for Philly.com and out of every 100 comments, I say that 99 of them are critical of either the writers, players, managers, coaches. You flat out don't have a nice thing to say about anybody. It's america and free speech and all, so go ahead and knock yourself type away. But, man, it must be tough to go through life with you being so smart and everyone you comment about being so stupid. CMattyG - Amen to every word of that, Matty.
This guy has ripped Blanton for years telling us how awful he is, now he rips RAJ for not getting more for him.
Be thankful you do not go through life like he does.
Sorry to see Joe go, he was much underated. Except for 1 season you could count on him going out every 5th day, giving us close to 200 innings, he always ran out every grounder, and he never complained once.

Big Joe is a class act, he will be sorely missed. Be a big score if this is true..Go Phillies!!! TexasYankee
A much better deal would be Blanton and Pierre to the Orioles for Machado. onthebucks
I'm not big on Blanton, but who wants a .244 (in double A) hitter? They need to get something better than that for a starting pitcher. djlen- get a clue. he's a #4 starting pitcher with a 4.59 ERA and who is only under contract for this year. what exactly do you think you're going to get for him, genius??
