Opening night roster announced
Andy Martino
This is anticlimactic after a final week of spring training loaded with decisions and human drama, but here is the Phillies’ 25-man roster to begin the season. It includes 12 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders and four outfielders. Miguel Cairo is in, for now.
Pitchers: Right-handers Joe Blanton, Clay Condrey, Chad Durbin, Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, Brett Myers and Chan Ho Park and left-handers Scott Eyre, Cole Hamels, J.A. Happ, Jamie Moyer and Jack Taschner.
Catchers: Chris Coste and Carlos Ruiz.
Infielders: Eric Bruntlett, Cairo, Greg Dobbs, Pedro Feliz, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley.
Outfielders: Raul Ibanez, Matt Stairs, Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth.
Looks good. Solid, balanced team. No major weaknesses. Should be another great season. CenterCityPhan
Andy, you had a great spring. Now get busy and totally enjoy the Phiily Scene. Bensonhurst is long gone so you are now in the precikous present. Try our great restaurants. Let me know if you need any suggestions. Regarding the local gossip scene : Avoid Gross at any cost and see if you can help the rest of us fix PHILLY10. mick314
Cairo is a classic utility man. Good choice. Sheffield would have been a blunder. spinmeister
Pat the Bat looked good today against the Phils, hope it doesn't come back to bitem. Myerstown
There was an article today on ESPN saying that Sheffield was convinced to go to the Mets due to David Wright's sales pitch. I guess Wright must have called Sheffield up and asked him how he'd like to play on a second place team, lol. JimG
Pat The Bat's replacement went 2-3 with a HR and 2 RBIs today...so he looked better than Pat The Bat. JimG
Option the pitchers out inbetween starts to get extra bats. bigeastbeast
No outfield depth whatsoever. I like Stairs as a PH, but who is giving Ibanez a blow or when Victorino pulls a hammy. Bruntlett is serviceable as a defensive replacement, but I'd like to see a legitimate fourth outfielder. misterpet
Dobbs and Bruntlett can easily play the corner outfield positions, so I see no problem there. silverfade80
Lefty laden, no balance, lousy pitching. Recipe for failure. Will add plenty to 10,098. The Wizard
Yup, because it obviously didn't work last season. silverfade80- Wizard- 10098 losses and a 2008 World Series Championship, so go back up the turnpike to Flushing in your new stadium with your late season chokers jamarder
Wiz - just keep telling yourself that to make you feel better. Those 10098 have as much to do with this year as your lousy 1962 team. Stick to what is relevant. d27schaal
They don't need 12 pitchers to star the season, not with three off days early this month. Not sure why. Park is in the bullpen for a week until he gets to start. So that's like having another in relief. 76er
Hey Wizard can you repeat that, this big championship trophy keeps getting in my way. Im sorry can you repeat that I forgot to take these championship rings out of my ears as well. What did you say Wizard? Theo1980
