KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Laynce Nix was scheduled to make the two-hour trek west Tuesday with a skeleton Phillies travel squad but a bruised rib scratched him from Charlie Manuel's lineup.

Nix suffered the injury Sunday when he bowled into Detroit catcher John Holaday at home plate. He played Monday but left after just one at-bat. Nix signed a two-year, $2.5 million deal this winter. He's 4 for 19 with five walks in early spring action.

The Phillies do not believe the injury is serious, but they'll sit Nix again. In his place, Luis Montanez will serve as the designated hitter.

Domonic Brown will make his first start in a week. Brown is 3 for 11 with two triples, one walk and no strikeouts this spring. But team officials want to see progress in left field and he'll finally spend some time out there Tuesday.

The full lineup:

1. Scott Podsednik 8
2. Pete Orr 5
3. John Mayberry Jr. 3
4. Hunter Pence 9
5. Luis Montanez 0
6. Domonic Brown 7
7. Brian Schneider 2
8. Michael Martinez 6
9. Freddy Galvis 4

Cole Hamels makes his third start of the spring. Following him is Dave Bush, Raul Valdes and Brian Sanches.
