Well, Brett Myers made it to the ballpark today without running into any doors, and made his first rehab appearance since June 5 hip surgery. Myers pitched one inning, allowed two singles and struck out the side for Class-A Clearwater.

Assistant GM Scott Proefrock told me last week, before the swollen eye drama, that the Phils do not expect Myers to need the full 30 days allowed for a rehab assignment, and we can assume that he's now back on that clock. As with any first rehab outing, we'll know more when he wakes up tomorrow and has a feel for how he bounced back.

You may have noticed less blogging the past few days; I've been working hard on some stuff for Sunday and not covering too many games this week.  That will continue for a few days, but I'll keep ya posted if anything big happens, here and on Twitter.

The season is an extra week longer this year due to the Third World Baseball Classic. This should benefit the Phillies.

There is a lot of circumstantial evidence.

I would not make a judgment (baaybrrej) based on circumstantial evidence (you were not there). However, he's making a case for himself. Worse, it's typical Type-A personalities that get into this type of problem. It'll rear it's ugly head over time. He can't sustain drinking and being an athlete over time. On another note, Lidge needs the competition. This will help him having Myers over his shoulder.

Haven't noticed a difference in the coverage Andy. Actually, I thought Ray Parillo was the beat guy so seeing you were the guy in charge caught me by surprise.

I'm not surprised to see that Myers punched out the side.

Who cares about this? Lidge will get better or Myers will step in. The bigger issue is the Cards and Giants. Both have better starting pitching than the Phils. Remember the Giants series (and being swept). And the Cards can hit like they are, well, us. And if you saw Billy Wagner pitch for the Muts tonight, you will know that he looks pretty good. God help us if the Cards pick him up. Phils shoulda ponied up for Halladay too. Fantasy you say? The Phils have over $20MM in pitcher salaries coming off of the books next year. Or if not that, they should have NEVER resigned Moyer and put that money toward Derek Lowe. Pray that the Rockies get the wild card. Pray the Cards combust somehow.

It's okay to be fearful of possible postseason opponents but there is no doubt every other NL team should be praying even harder they won't have to face the Phils.

Cards and Giants have better starting pitching than the Phillies? What are you smoking? The Phillies have much more depth in their staff, particularly with Lee as their ace. Lincecum has not looked good lately nor has Cain and Wilson is not a great closer. The Giants do not play well on the road and the Phillies bats are heating up. Who are the Cardinals starters that you love so much? Ryan Franklin is the closer. Remember him? Lidge is a concern, admittedly, but you must be kidding about Wagner. Ask the Mets fans what they think of him in clutch situations. You were willing to give up Happ, Drabek, Brown for Halladay, who has pitched poorly of late. You must be joking.

Yeah, drinking always catches up to you in baseball. That has never worked for anyone. Except for Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Micky Mantle... BTW, the Cards have two of the best pitchers in baseball in Carpenter and Wainwright and Linecum and Cain are studs. Still, I like matching Lee and Happ against those with Blanton a close third. If Cole can regain his form, I like out staff better than either of those staffs in a seven game series. Assuming the Dodgers keep playing mediocre ball, the Phils are looking good.

When Rich Allen was a rookie, a newsman in Philly approached Gene Mauch and tipped him off that Allen was into drinking too much. Mauch's reply was: "So he'll be a superstar for 5 years instead of 10."

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
