The Phillies' Shane Victorino watches his second-inning grand slam off Brewers' ace CC Sabathia. The blast put the Phils ahead for good in Game 2 of the NL division series. (Ron Cortes / Staff Photographer)

It doesn't take much to irritate Brett Myers.

He wondered at one point last night at Citizens Bank Park, if anybody wanted to ask him about his pitching. He had allowed two hits and two runs in seven innings in a 5-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 2 of the NLDS. He had answered questions about which Myers would show up -- the one that went 7-2 with a 1.80 ERA in 11 starts after the all-star break or the one who pitched terribly in his final two regular-season starts? So when he got his third question about his second-inning at-bat against Brewers lefthander CC Sabathia, he had to wonder, "Did I pitch tonight?"

Yes, Brett, you pitched.

Yes, Brett, you pitched very well.

But people see you pitch all the time. They definitely don't see you hit. And they definitely don't see you make a stud like Sabathia throw 19 of his 98 pitches to you.

"I know I'm a terrible hitter, but I really can't explain it," he said. "It was like one of those freakish things that I was able to lay off some good pitches that he made and able to extend his pitch count."

I wasn't sure how it translated on radio or TV, but the crowd was going absolutely crazy during Myers' at-bat. They sensed the importance of running up Sabathia's pitch count. They sensed how ridiculous it could be if Myers actually got on base with two outs and Jimmy Rollins in the on-deck circle. I heard Scott Franzke's and Larry Andersen's call of the at-bat this morning on the drive to the airport, and the noise in the background as they described the action didn't reflect how loud it actually was.

It was LOUD.

It was even louder when Shane Victorino hit the grand slam.

You might have noticed Victorino pointing into the stands after he homered. Yeah, he was pointing to his dad ... who had just flown in from Hawaii.

*

Bob Ford takes a look at Myers' big night. And, yes, that includes Myers' at-bats. Myers was proud of the way he bounced back after struggling in the first inning. But that at-bat is something people might be talking about years from now, especially if the Phillies advance to the NLCS or (gulp) the World Series.

*

Jim Salisbury goes inside the game.

*

J.C. Romero worked out of a jam in the eighth inning and Brad Lidge worked quickly in the ninth. Corey Hart worked the Brewers out of a rally in the first.

*

John Gonzalez says the Fightins are not afraid. Gonzo then chats with Ford and Sheridan about Cole Hamels and Jamie Moyer. Frank Fitzpatrick makes some keen observations from around the ballpark.

The 2 at bats by Myers and the fan reaction sums up Philly sports and their fans to a T. We know players are going to fail at times. Its the nature of sports. But when the Philly fan sees the grit, determination, effort, and heart like the 2 Myers at bats, you grab the fan's hearts. Yes, we Philly fans know failure, but we also know effort and heart when we see it. The players may not win the game, but such efforts will win the Philly fan.

Much has already been written about it, but I thought the Philly fans did themselves proud by cheering with every pitch Myers extended the at-bat in the 2nd. I loved how the announcer (Joe Simpson, I think) commented, "That's the first time I've ever seen an ovation for a weak foul ball." The fans were knowledgeable enough to know that even if Myers had been retired, his tough at-bat had lessened the chance that Sabathia was going to pitch a dominant game. Everything that happened subsequently was a bonus (a needed bonus, it turns out). From an offensive standpoint, I'm heartened that this Phillies team has taken after their 1993 counterparts (who were much less powerful than this team but really had no trouble scoring runs in the postseason, you might remember) in working the count and getting on base. Timely hitting hasn't been there yet, but it will come (Rollins had a good at-bat with the bases loaded and came close to a two-run single, for example). Of course, winning in the postseason is all about good pitching, and no one can complain about the two starts so far ...

That Myers at bat will live forever in Phillies history. His concentration was unbelievable. You could see - like Mitch Williams pointed out in the post game - that Myers was getting “smaller’’ by leaning back and bending his knees with each pitch. The crowd was great. The TV guys said they never heard that kind of ovation on that 3-2 foul ball. Talking about the TV crew, can somebody tell this Milwaukee guys they are doing a Divisional Series playoff game and not a Brewers game? All they talk is about the Brewers players. TBS and MLB have to do something about that. I don’t know if it was the intensity of the playoffs, but it seemed, once again, the players responded to Charlie’s move. Victorino and Werth made him look like a genius. Victorino Salami could be one of the biggest HR in the post season history of the Phillies. Incredible!

Don't worry Zorro. If the Phillies make the NLCS, we'll have to suffer through Joe Buck and Tim McCarver, not the TBS guys. We'll get to hear all about how Philly fans constantly boo our players and how good Manny has been since the Dodgers traded for him. He'll make us pine away for Joe Simpson and the idiocy of John Smoltz.

Well said JamesJ! Brett needs to pass some of that grit and determination along to Utley, Howard, & Burrell.

What an incredible postseason journey we've had to date....the doubleplay, Hamels pitching gem, Myers pitching gem, Myers @ bat, Victorino's grandslam (1st postseason for the Phillies & Victorino's 1st career slam)and Charlie's strategies. We now give the ball to our "elderstateman" for the sweep. GO PHILS!!

danielswolf, I don't think we are going to see Joe Buck. It's football season and him and Aikman are Fox #1 team. Maybe we'll see Tom McCarthy, like the last two Phillies Saturday games.

I actually turned down the sound on the TV and listened to Harry K, LA, Scott F, and Wheels on the radio. The radio is about a few seconds behind the TV, but the commentary is so worth it. Next time when people complain about Wheels and/or Sarge we should remember having to endure TBS, ESPN & Fox.

Zorro, good point. I hope you're right. Buck did say last week that he and Aikman will be calling the Skins/Eagles game. But he might do the NLCS games during the week and just do an NFL game on Sunday. Who knows. Unfortunately, I live in Richmond and don't have the luxury of listening to the radio... the MLB internet stream is too far behind TV.

I'm sure that Joe Buck believes we cannot do without him so he'll find a way. If I'm right the radio will definately be on.

Joe Buck will definitely do any Fox games. Last year, Aikman was with another announcer during the playoffs and WS.

I said it last night and I'll say it again... Can we scrap the debates, the election, and just make Charlie KING???!!! The man is a gosh darn GENIUS!

bobby, I'm a little worried about what happened with Utley, HOWARD, and Burrell last night. If you look at the numbers you'll see what I mean. Ryan and Chase looked lame like back in July and Aug. with lots of bad swings at sweeping breaking pitches. I thought we had gotten this out of our system but maybe not. Lets hope it was just the one night.

The Phillies own this series! They have the right to go to Milwaukee KNOWING they are going to win. They are better than the Brewers it's so obvious especially in attitude. I don't believe in jinxes. The Phils need to be relaxed and go about their business on Saturday. Sweep them Brewers out of here! Bring on the Dodgers (or the Cubs)!!!

Wally: I hear you on the big three, but you have to figure that Utley and Howard were just owned by CC last night. (Chase actually got good contact on one ball, but right at the right-fielder.) Pat is still looking bad. Game 3 will tell the tale, as they should be able to hit against Bush. If not, then I'll be worried right along with you.
