Howdy from Houston. As expected, Brett Myers was activated today (Joe Bisenius was outrighted to Lehigh Valey to make room on the 40-man roster).  More newsworthy, Clay Codrey's rehab assignment has been put on hold because the reliever experienced yet another setback in that slow-to-heal oblique muscle.  Condrey will likely travel to Philadelphia next week to be examined by team physician Michael Ciccotti.

If not for Tyler Walker's contributions, this Condrey thing would be a bigger problem for the Phils, though the team is still losing a guy who was a key contributor not so long ago.

Asked if Condrey was out for the year, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said it was "possible," but he would not know until the visit to Ciccotti.

How is Condrey's condition more newsworthy than Myers being activated?

Why not? He played during the regular season.

The way I understand it is...if you're on the Disabled List as of 1 September, you'll eligible for post-season play.

Yeah, Myers is eligible. He was on the DL so he counted towards being on the post-season roster. The Condrey thing is a good lesson for all of the people who complain about pitchers being overprotected from injuries instead of "toughing it out". Condrey kept quiet about his back being hurt and tried to play his way through it. He ended up screwing up his mechanics and injuring the oblique muscle which turned out to be a more serious injury.

Myers is eligible for the postseason. If a player is on the roster but on the DL, he does not have to be activated before Sept. 1. And JimG, good point on Condrey.

Myers might be starting soon if Cliff Lee keeps sucking wind. Man has he run out of gas! And where is our offense. If Howard doesn't homer we can't score any more. Someone file a missing person report for Raul

losing Condrey is not an issue. With the addition of Myers and Pedro we have plenty of middle relief. The issue has become the dreadful offensive slump that has gripped the team for almost 2 weeks now. Charlie is a patient guy and stands by his team but there has to be some changes in philosophy to get some things moving. The team seems incredibly tight at home plate and the decision making of the hitters shows that. If not for some very good starting pitching, we'd be in a really close race. Maybe a shakeup in the batting order might restore some fun and production to the offense. Try it Charlie..you have nothing to lose.

I saw them live in Houston from a seat about 30 rows behind home plate. At no time this or last year have the Phils looked so lifeless. How can a 3-hour flight make a team look so jet-lagged? They played as if they were all on downers.

Thanks to Ty Walker we are still solid in middle relief . Whats with Lee and the mound grooming ? Do you suppose his location is buried down there someplace ?

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
