Myers Gets Lit Up
Brett Myers has a 5.91 ERA after nine starts this season.
How much should the Phillies be worried?
Consider:
- He is tied for the fourth-worst ERA in the National League.
- He has the highest ERA on the team after Clay Condrey threw a scoreless inning tonight.
- In 4 2/3 innings tonight against the Braves, Myers allowed nine hits, eight runs (six earned runs) and three walks. He struck out six.
- He served up three home runs to add to his major-league leading total of 15 homers allowed.
- He has pitched more than five innings just four times.
- He has just three quality starts.
- In his last five starts, he is 0-3 with a 7.62 ERA (18 earned runs in 24 innings).
Zo the guy sucks. I don't know why we continue to believe he will be better because he continues to disappoint. What a slight to Cole Hamels by running Myers out there opening day as the staff ace. Myers is the staff a.. alright.
Terrible. I'd say put him in the bullpen but that would improve absolutely nothing. Send him down, pull up one of the youngins, and pray either Myers wakes up or the young buck has the stuff Kendrick did last year.
Myers is this years Freddy Garcia. In both cases Gillick thought he was so clever in getting the Phils over the top in acquiring Garcia last year and moving Myers back to the rotation this year. Kendrick came along and saved Gillick last year. Who will it be this year to bail out Gillick. To me the only solution is to move Myers for a starter so he can do what he really wants to do and that is close!
i heard the phils brass are looking to trade him to a team looking for late inning bullpen relief. it may make sense to do this. phils should give him a couple more starts but if he continues to pitch the way he has, the organization should look to trade him. he currently adds no value to the starting rotation. he is not needed in the phils bullpen. something has to give. cant keep throwing him out there and getting rocked.
The award for this years Adam Eaton goes to....(drumroll)......You got it!!! BRETT MYERS!!!!
Sending Myers to the 'pen might be an answer. It helped Zito. But who would we bring up/send down? And I have to question why Charlie let him stay in so long. I know the 'pen is stretched, but........ And doesn't Charlie realize we score better in later innings? If he had pulled Myers sooner, maybe the outcome would have been different.
PhillieinAZ or whatever your name is, I read in the newspaper that the Phils had the worst ERA for starters, sorry I didnt take the time to check it myself! And after 2nite, it might be a safe bet they're in last now!!! lol
Thats easy Norma, switch Myers and Durbin, problem solved lol
CLINTON NJ: Our major problem is that in addition to this year's Adam Eaton, Brett Myers, we still have last year's Adam Eaton, Adam Eaton, in the rotation as well. That leaves us in the difficult position of needing to call up 2 young pitchers and hope they both turn into this year's Kyle Kendrick. On top of that we need Kyle Kendrick to get back to pitching like last year's Kyle Kendrick. We've either got to get really lucky with our starters or we need to load up the bullpen and let 3 relievers throw 3 innings each instead of running Myers and Eaton out there every 5th day.
I'm not going to defend Myers' atrocious performance, but if Ryan Howard caught the throw from second in the third inning, which would have been a double play, just maybe Myers would have settled down. I've seen at least three catchable throws that Howard has dropped this year. It's bad enough he hasn't hit, but there's no excuse for his shoddy defensive play.
Oh, and how did moving Zito to the bullpen help him? He didn't get into a game in relief, and then the Giants put him back into the rotation.
NORMA: I understand the frustration with Myers but, realistically, how could Manuel pull him sooner? We are using the bullpen for at least 3 innings every game as it is. On top of that tonight we are going to ask them for what, 6 innings to give a shot at a win? It might have been ok for tonight but the way we are overusing the bullpen is a major red flag. They simply will not be able to continue to be used this heavily and continue to be effective. At this rate all the bullpen arms will be dead by the end of June, for crying out loud. Then what do we do? The bottom line is we need starting pitching that will consistently give us innings (6 per game at least). We just can't keep running guys like Myers and Eaton out there every 5th day because over an extended period it will simply blow our bullpen apart.
Jeg7777, I know Zito never pitched in relief. But he said pitching *on the side* helped him. Of course, I have no idea what he's done since being put back in the rotation.
bski, I guess I was just venting. LOL! I agree Charlie didn't really have much of a choice. I'm sure part of his philosophy of keeping Myers in and "working it out" is knowing the 'pen is being stretched.
Clinton.....Or send Madsen down and bring up a young arm.
