Jamie Moyer can’t be beat.
It’s too bad this isn’t 1885 and starting pitchers can pitch every other day because the Phillies could have pitched Moyer twice this weekend against the Florida Marlins at Dolphin Stadium. He allowed two runs in six innings last night in a 4-2 victory over the Marlins that moved the Phillies back into sole possession of first place in the National League East.
Moyer is 10-0 with a 3.03 ERA in 10 career starts against the Marlins.
Not too shabby.

The Phillies signed Adam Eaton to a three-year, $24.5 million contract before the 2007 season.
Baseball people at the time called the signing a mistake.
The Phillies acknowledged yesterday those people were right. Eaton has been bumped from the rotation to the bullpen after the Phillies acquired Joe Blanton on Thursday in a trade with the Oakland Athletics. Had Eaton been doing the job the Phillies expected him to do, they would not have needed to make a trade. Eaton would be stockpiling innings and wins.
But Eaton is 13-18 with a 6.06 ERA in 49 starts since he joined the Phillies, so Eaton can’t say he hasn’t been given an opportunity to pitch his way out of his troubles on the mound.

In the Phillies Notebook: Brad Lidge’s arm remains attached to his upper body and the Phillies could be talking with the Colorado Rockies about a potential trade before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

- Moyer would be an excellent pitching coach. He is a leader. Everyone wants a quality number one or two starter. Maybe, no probably, the team has a number 2 or 3. The offense needs to pick up the pace.— wmontanez27
- Eaton can't say anything to defend himself anymore. His career is probably over after this year. You can't pretend that your best year was five years ago and then all of a sudden put it back together again.— Mike H.

- Oddly enough, if Eaton wants to pitch someone will offer him a minor league contract to see if he can win a job there and prove himself worthy of being a starter.
You just can't say enough about Moyer!! The guy comes up big when you need him to, it's all about experience with him and I hope that when his playing days are over that he stays on in some capacity whether it's as a bullpen coach or pitching coach (watch out Dubs).

- Kyle Kendrick is as inconsistent as they come, I really hope that Happ and Carrasco are ready next yr. If so the Phillies will be tough to beat. This yr is toast as far as going to the series unless the bats get wicked hot. Even if they do this team has not shown me that can hit stellar pitching. If the Phillies can pull of the Happ/Carrasco/Victorino/Marson trade for Holliday/Fuentes they could get to the series this yr. You ppl have to understand that this isn't footabll you can't just have extended window of opportunity and hope think things fall apart on other teams and you get your ring. In baseball when you have a good team you have do what Milwaukee did and GO FOR IT. I'm sick and tired of YOU wanting to hold on to Marson and the pitchers, there is no telling how they will perform up here. - Truth, didn't Fuentes get pulled in favor Corpas as closer for the Rockies last year, or am I thinking of someone else? I'm really not sure but it sounds about right. If he can bolster an already good bullpen then I'd be cool with the trade because Holliday is a good offensive player that could take over in LF if the team doesn't retain Pat. I think our center fielders would have a heck of a time running ragged around the outfield with the Pat and Matt show in the outfield.— cg
- FROM PREVIOUS TOPIC...Well Mark1npt, I think your right about having a flame thrower on your staff, its almost a must if you want to win. But my defintion of a flame thrower is someone who throws 93 and up. I think Blanton does that, Myers can, and Hamels is right up there. When talking playoff starting pitching though, I thought you really only need three starters(not saying ours are good enough, but close) to get through a seven game series, and your 4th strongest pitcher would be the long man in the pen. I still hope they put Myers in the pen, and bring back Happ, and or another young arm. GO PHILS!! - In baseball defense is overrated. I love Victorino's arm but how many wins does that translate into in a season? Holliday and Burrell would make the plays they need to. How many gms has Burrell cost us? NONE. As a matter of fact I would trade Burrell and his expiring contract plus Carrasco for Holliday and Fuentes. Securing our outfield and 'pen for next yr. - I'm not itching to trade Burrell but if I could get Holliday in return I think I may start to get an itch. Not sure why Colorado wants him, he's a FA after this year. I don't see that deal happening but I do think the Phils need to add a lefty bat off the bench and a lefty arm in the pen between now and the trade deadline.— KMG

Comment removed.- I love Burrell, but the fact remains he's getting older and now in the non steroid era rapidly declining production from your players after the age of 34-35 is going to be the norm......see Manny and others....Pat wants a long term deal at big bucks, I think the Phils offer of 2 years at $10 mil/per was right on target....if he really loves Philly and wants to stay here he'll take it gladly...but I wouldn't go longer than that for him, now Holiday, that's a whole different ballgame....still I wouldn't give up both Carrasco and Marson for him. I'm expecting Marson to be our next Lieby for the next 10-12 years....Ruiz will be back in Panama next year serving pina coladas to my whole family on or next cruise!— Mark1npt
- Uh KMG, when Jenkins isn't in the starting lineup we have 2 left handed bats off the bench...Dobbs and Jenkins. I thought our lineup was left handed enough already with Rollins and Victorino being switch hitters and Utley, Howard, and Jenkins as lefties that's over half of our position players not to mention they could put Dobbs at 3B and it would be 6 of 8 position players from the left side. If anything we need a consistent right handed hitter in the lineup that can hit .300-.330 every year and produce runs.— cg

- NORMA: He's not alone in that department. I had my usual uneasy feeling again while watching today's game. Whenever the Phils score early (I'm using score very loosely here) and then go scoreless for the last 5, 6, 7 innings of the game, I always get the sense that the game is going to go on and on until the other team finally wins it. Over and over I sit there amazed that they can put up an unbroken string of zeros no matter how long the game goes. I hate to say they're just going through the motions, but it sure looks like it.— bski

- This team runs the bases like a senior citizen softball team. One base at a time, save your energy it's a (9)inning game. We need a catcher. We need a catcher. Were supposed to be contenders, and we have the worst catcher in the league. Gillick should know that the catcher position is not the position to save cash for your budget. It's by far the most important position on the field..All we talk about is pitching. Milt Thompson is getting a free ride. Lets go ZO, shed some light on this hitting coach. - I know a lot of us have expressed our frustration over Manuel removing Burrell late in games, but I can't take it anymore. I understand what Manuel's thinking is. I guess my major problem with the whole thing comes down to Taguchi. Manuel will only use him when he's got absolutely no other option. Again, I understand why, but it just can't continue. Manuel is now regularly using our backup middle infielder as a replacement for Burrell. On top of that, he is now routinely breaking the unwritten rule of keeping your backup catcher on the bench in case of emergency. Now, Manuel would rather use a catcher to pinch hit and risk having to use Werth behind the plate, rather than use Taguchi. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't use Taguchi either. The Phils need to release him and pick up or bring up somebody they can actually use, because we are getting caught short and stuck in some tough spots because of him.— bski
