Righthander Mike Stutes will have arthroscopic shoulder surgery Tuesday, a source said. Stutes, on the disabled list since late April, could miss the rest of the season.

The surgery will clean out fraying from Stutes' shoulder. There is believed to be no serious damage to his rotator cuff, which would portend a lengthier absence.

Stutes, 25, complained of shoulder pain late in spring training but started the season on the active roster. He appeared in six games and posted a 6.35 ERA before being placed on the disabled list April 22.

He had been training in Florida with the hopes a rest program would cure his shoulder pain. Instead, surgery is necessary.

The Phillies have already lost two righthanded relievers — Jose Contreras and David Herndon — to season-ending Tommy John surgeries on their injured elbows.

I'm not sure how good Stutes would have been this year. But last year him and Bastardo were a surprise, and saved the middle relief, thereby covering up the defiencies at middle relief which you have now. Swimmer, Diekman and Savery aren't them.

We heard the term "inverted W" about 5000 times within the first month that Stutes was called up last year, but rarely since. Some people predicted with that kind of delivery, Stutes would soon injure his shoulder. Too bad Dubious Doobie was asleep at the switch.

Contreras is 40 going on 60, and Herndon is unproven no big deal losing them. Stutes was decent last year so that hurts to the extent we don't have anyone to pitch the 7th inning to get to Bastardo/Pap. This should not be too tough to make up for, but Amaro is borderline incompetent.

Another one of Dave Montgomery's prized pitching assets that Uncle Cholly and Dubee ruined.

I wish Mike nothing but the best in his rehab and comeback. Something needs to be said about a pitcher who complained late in spring training of something going on with his shoulder but the medical staff and pitching coach remained quiet.

After this season I hope RAJ looks long and hard at Rich Dubee, the medical staff and the training staff. Not as a witch hunt, but as a means in trying to determine if lines of communication between player and staff are on disconnect; and what needs fixing....

Another arm blown out by the self-proclaimed "hitting guru? AS Chris "Wheels " Wheeler would say "Oh, boy".

All of the injury issues will make it more difficult for RAJ and the management to define the problem as seriously as it needs to be. There are no position prospects to bring up, except Brown. The bullpen is a wreck. The team is aging and many parts need replacement - everyone knows what they are. It is the biggest payroll in MLB, limiting flexibility. Morale is starting to go when players like Victorino start blaming the press for the losses. What are they going to do? Anyone have any ideas? Someone tell me it's not as bleak as I think it is.

Its worse. Because those big contracts will weight down the Phillies for years (as in 3-5 years), and new draft choices will take 3-5 years to come up to the big leagues.

Meanwhile, the Phillies will be back to the bad old days of the 90's, Amaro and Chollie will be gone, there won't even be anyone to blame.

And the fans have 1 WS to show for sitting through the 1990's and half the 2000's (15 years), we've been treated to 4 great teams that were mismanaged, and then off for another 15 years of cr*polla teams.

I think the fans are being way to patient with this train wreck on a diamond.

Big loss the kid had a big league arm and pitched well when he was used properly. Question is why did it take the Phils medical folks so long to realize he needed to have it scoped

Do the Phillies have a manager and Pitching Coach?

If you think they do, how can you tell?
