Midseason prospecting
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
NEW YORK — The score is 3-0 on Baseball America's midseason Top 50 prospects list; three former Phillies farmhands to zero current ones.
Three players who were named to this Sunday's Futures Game in Kansas City appear. They are catcher Travis D'Arnaud (19th), first baseman Jonathan Singleton (23d) and outfielder Anthony Gose (38th). D'Arnaud and Gose are with Toronto and Singleton is property of Houston.
Two third basemen on teams that could be interested in Cole Hamels appear high on the list. Texas' Mike Olt is 11th on the list and Detroit's Nick Castellanos is 12th. If the Phillies are to trade Hamels, they could look for a young third base prospect in return.
Check Philly.com next week for The Inquirer's updated Top 20 Phillies prospects list.

Jared Cosart could very easily be in the top 50 as well. The Pence deal will go down as one of worst in Phillies history, and there have been a lot. FABER- Cosart wants out of the Houston org from what I hear.
Romus - Historically, it would be against the odds if even one of them turns out to be as good as Pence. Once scouts have laid eyes on you for a few seasons in the minors, if you don't make the top 50 they are usually correct unlike the draft. On the other hand, the Baseball America top 25 players is very accurate over the last 8 years that I could find. Almost 90% of the players that make the list are starters and a lot are full on studs. If you can get the 11th rated player on this list for Hamels, you jump on it.
UncleStosh - Sorry, I thought they were all outside the top 50. Don't ask me how I messed that up on a 50 word article. Re-post: Same post but I agree with you. Considering how accurate the Top 25 has been, it looks like the Phillies got rolled over. It's hard to believe they gave up 2 Top 25 prospects for Pence.

Let's just make sure that we don't re-trade for the 3 that are on the list when we already gave them up.
We should be looking at others on the list when, and if, Hamels et al are moved.
And next season, I suspect there will be 5 (10% of the list) that are Phils prospects. And that is not whistling in the graveyard. FABER is correct about Cosart and a few other kids down there.
Enough from Penobscot. Chillin' time. 24sDad
Trade Hamels!!!!!!! Big market, annual contending teams, ie NYY, Sox, Rangers, Angels, Giants et al, DO NOT TRADE their superstars. Romus
In 2007 the 11th rated player was Tim Lincecum. In 2006 it was Prince Fielder. The list goes on and on. If someone wants to give up a Baseball America top 20 prospect for Hamels, you do it in a second. UncleStosh
D Brown was a top 20 also... WFChamps
Prospects; a dime a dozen! JBinPA
An even more depressing way to look at is that Baseball America's #1 rated catching prospect, #1 rated firstbase prospect, and #3rd best centerfield prospect are all former Phils. andyd
It is time for the people to stop paying to see this team play. Amaro has already blown what could have been a huge television contract. Who ever takes this team on will get them at a several million dollar discount now. They won 102 last year and went no where. But they did take a lot of money out of people's pockets. 102 wins in the next two years might be about right now. Just think soon anyone will be able to get a ticket. There will be lots of Mets fans here when they play the Phillies from now on. And they need to do what Holmgren did and just unload the roster. Only problem is Howard and Rollins and Papelbon are being so overpaid that in another year the team will be these three and players from Reading and Lehigh Valley. Paying to see this team play is like throwing money away on the lottery, useless. rich729
yea that worked out real good for holgren didn't it! Ryne Duren
Put a tag on Sammy and list him 'as is' in the sale bin, NewMick314
I don't get why everyone complains that we let these guys go...prospects are prospects, some pan out some don't. Dom Brown was #1 a few years ago and look how he has struggled to stick with the big club. And he is one of many over the years. Just because these guys are ranked highly now does not mean they will ever amount to anything substantial. Halladay and Pence are very good proven players and we were a team looking to win now...so every one needs to just get over it. Plus D'Arnaud would be blocked behind Ruiz, they tried Singleton in the outfield and he didn't catch on and his hitting suffered and obviously we are tied into a certain 1B longterm so Singleton got dealt. It's been a long season even for the farm system. The three top young outfield prospects at AAA and AA, Mitchell, Brown and Gillies are all on the Disbabled List. The Baby Aces, especially No. 1 pitching prospect Trevor May, have been less than impressive at Reading. The top third base prospect Cody Asche who was leading the Florida State League in hitting is off to a slow start at Reading. Now the best young arms in the system: Biddle, Morgan, Wright, Colvin, Neris and Knigge are way down at High A Clearwater. Dull
