The Phillies beat the Diamondbacks, 11-4.

They got 16 hits. They didn't hit one home run, which is worth noting. Charlie Manuel lamented the fact before the game that this team hasn't been able to put together big innings without hitting home runs. Well, tonight they scored four runs in the third and four runs in the seventh without the help of the long ball.

*

Jamie Moyer allowed six hits and two runs in seven innings. He walked none and struck out five. He threw well.

*

Max Scherzer is gone after four innings. Jamie Moyer keeps truckin'. He's allowed one run and three hits through the first four innings.

*

The Diamondbacks tied the game in the second, but the Phillies have been able to hit Diamondbacks phenom Max Scherzer. Chase Utley hit a one-out double in the third to get things going. Ryan Howard walked. Geoff Jenkins hit a two-out single to center to score Utley to make it 2-1. Pedro Feliz reached on an error to scored Howard, who had moved to third on a wild pitch to make it 3-1. Carlos Ruiz followed with another single to score Jenkins, and Jamie Moyer doubled down the left-field line to score Feliz to make it 5-1.

Moyer is 2 for 2 against Scherzer.

Scherzer made his big-league debut April 29 against Houston and threw 4 1/3 innings of perfect relief. It was the longest debut in modern baseball history of a pitcher who retired every batter he faced. He also struck out seven batters. But the Phillies, who entered the series struggling offensively, have done a good job so far.

*

The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Shane Victorino scored on Ryan Howard's sacrifice fly to center field.

Good to see the Phillies offense have one of those nights even if it was against a guy on my fantasy baseball team. lol The Diamondbacks are a good team hopefully the Phils can win the series.

This was a good game. Burrell had an off night. He made Shazbot look good, but everyone else hit him pretty good. Not too worried about Randy Johnson tomorrow...

I love it the "old man" teaching the youngster how it's done. Great to see Phillies offense have a great night.

Bottom line is this was Moyers best start of the season, I'm glad he did well. But with his age and 80mph fastball this was probably as good as it gets for a while. we may see another start like this in July...

Here's a positive: he only stuck out once. He's not a child. Put a couple of nice games together, and we'll see. As we keep getting reminded, he was ROY and MVP. See, that kind of pedigree holds you to a higher standard. Highest salary arbitration ever. Thinks he's in the same league as ARod and Pujols, wants to be paid the same. Oh, he's also the face of MLB - most national endorsements, etc. Look, he was bad 3 out of 6 months last year - again, look it up. Just because he finished with great power numbers doesn't negate the fact that he hit .225 the first 2 months last year, and sub .200 the month Utley was out.

With all the hype about the rookie, what-his-name, it was very cool to see Jamie Moyer take him to school. That had to feel great for Jamie, and what a lift for the Phils. Now let's see if we can turn those tables and have Kyle Kendrick outpitch that old guy tonight.

Woops, I see it's Eaton tonight. Whatever. Let's hope the Phils provide him with some run support. Go Phils!

I'm tired of the whole Ryan discussion. He hits a home run, oh, he's coming out of it, he only strikes out once, it's a resurrection. Let's let him have a few solid weeks of hits, get the average above .220 before we think he is back on track. His production to this point is indefensible, he is a drag on the lineup and clearly not worth what he is getting paid. The criticism is well deserved, and only him producing will or should stop it. He brought this on himself, he wanted the big money, this is what he gets (criticism, booing) when he doesn't have stats to back up his argument that he is an elite player. Phillies management doesn't look so "classless" now, looks like they had him pegged for the right number all along.

The Phils proved last night it doesn't matter how hard you throw, good major league hitters will pound you if you don't have command. The kid looked good and I'm sure he'll be a good pitcher in the majors someday but right now he's just a thrower. As for Ryan Howard, I agree with John in La and jimmymack. If he wants to make the big money, he's going to have to be more consistent. It's not the strikeouts. He just needs to make less 'outs' period. No one is going to feel sorry for him. He's making over a million bucks a month. Does anyone think he earned his almost 2 million so far? It's important for him to come back to his usual level but what level is that exactly? Discounting his first partial year, his numbers are declining. I wouldn't be surprised if he hits .248 with 38 HRs and 95 rbis. That wouldn't be a bad year for a lot of players but if you think you are worth 15-20 million a season, you have to be better than that!

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
