Charlie Manuel, who led the Phillies to their first World Series championship since 1980, finished second in the National League Manager of the Year voting behind Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella.

It is important to note that these votes came before the postseason.

Piniella received 15 first-place votes and finished with 103 points.

Manuel received eight first-place votes and finished with 67 points.

I will never understand why these things can't be voted on after the postseason. How can you call the manager of a team that got killed in the first round of the playoffs manager of the year?

Charlie was robbed!!! Ok, so I know this was based on the regular season, but let's be honest, Charlie had to do far more managing than Pinella!

Losing a playoff series you are favored to win should disqualify you from manager of the year. I know the award was voted on was before the playoffs. This award is bogus. There is no doubt that Cholly should have won. Once again, no respect for the Phils. Same old tune, different day....

Betcha Maddon won the award in the AL. I have to agree with that. The NL award is not correct however. Why don't we just give the award to the manager of the team with the best record and leave it at that? This award is bogus.

I agree Deb! Charlie managed the regular season extremely well considering he had J-Roll's and Brett Myers' issues to deal with. Both of those players could've made things real ugly, but they were class acts (yes even Myers) and realized that Charlie was right and had the best interest of the player and the team.

Of course I'm sure that Charlie would much prefer being the reigning World Series Champion manager anyway!

Charlie was robbed, how did the Cubbies do in October? Problem is when these awards are voted on. Wait till after Series then cast the votes. Charlie got his award at end of October

Manager of the year isn't ALWAYS given to the guy with the best record, or even playoff teams. See Joe Girardi in '06 and Bowa in '01. Though, it would be nice to have the playoffs weigh in. I can see why they don't want the player awards to include postseason, because not every player makes it there. But it's the Manager's ultimate job to lead the team to a championship. Thus I think the Manager-OTY should be voted on after the World Series is won.

I can't help thinking that Charlie , after hearing of Lou P's winning the award , wasn't chuckling in that inimitable style of his as he gets sized for the ring Lou won't get. Charlie perhaps earned something more special - the respect of baseball people everywhere.

KarenA, not only he had to deal with Rollins and Myers issues, the whole team underachieved offensively, with the exception of Victorino and Werth. I wasn’t expecting Charlie to win it. But this is good for Cholly after the WS win. He will get a good 3-year extension.

James TL....Maddon DID win the AL. Seems these are consolation prizes for not winning the World Series. LOL! Hurdle, of the Rockies, won the NL last year. And like I said in a previous post...Every member of this team would rather have that WS title than any *subjective* award.

Speaking of *subjective awards*.....The Phillies website has a link to the "This Year in Baseball Awards". Voted on by the fans. Charlie's up for manager of the year, Lidge for closer, Howard for hitter. Plus we have 4 nominees for "post season moment". All good ones. And you can vote as many times as you want. So come on everybody! Stuff those ballot boxes! LOL!

I think the guy who really was robbed was Freddie Gonzalez. Gonzalez keep the Marlins in contention almost to the end of the season in only his second season as manager and after losing Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. Also, some of his best young pitchers, like Anibal Sanchez, Josh Johnson and Renyel Pinto, were on the DL for a long time. The diffenrece between him and Charlie was that the Phillies were expected to be in contention. He should be the Manager of the Year.
