Manuel Seeking Extension

Charlie Manuel wants to retire a Phillie.

He hopes to make that a likelihood this week in Las Vegas, where his agent is looking to negotiate a contract extension for him. Manuel is signed through 2009 with a club option for 2010. Manuel's agent, Pat Rooney, is hoping to extend the contract through 2011. Rooney said Manuel, who turns 65 next month, would like to manage another three to five years.

Jim Salisbury wrote that Manuel will make $1.5 million next season. His option for 2010 is worth $1.7 million. It is believed Manuel is seeking a salary approaching $3 million for 2011. That would put him just below Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella and Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker, whose contracts average more than $3 million per season. Los Angeles Dodgers manager Joe Torre and St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa average more than $4 million per season.

Framework for an extension is in place, but Manuel's side sees no reason this shouldn't be finalized this week in Vegas.

"We had hoped to have had this done before now," Rooney said. "We hope to get it done this week."

am I beginning to see a trend here? Resigning Moyers should be a sure thing, yet negotiations are going, "slow". Chollie wants an entension, not unreasonable. The Phillies seem to agree, yet negotiations are going, "slow". Rube, don't waste valuable time on simple, no brain signings. If it costs you a few extra bucks, or you don't get all the provisions you wanted, no bigie, your time is more valuable. You have to make time for the hard stuff (LF, RP, etc)

Rube: Sign Chollie's extension & re-sign Moyer, two no-brainers that you can cross off your 2 do list. Then move on to the "more complicated" issues of RP & LF.

Plus who doesn't want to see Chollie & Moyer retire as a Phillie?!

Anybody think Manuel looks like the Wizard of Oz? Give him the extension. He obviously knows how to handle the players' different personalities and although I don't always agree on his on field decisions (like batting Utley and Howard 3-4 in the lineup) he did win a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP! Sign Moyer unless you can get Lowe.

I'd like to see how the Phils deal with success before they extend his contract. He's not going anywhere anyway.

Give Charlie what he wants. He's earned it.

The Phillies are blowing the good will that winning a championship brings. At a time when they have a solid core of players, a winning atitude, good reputation and a "players mgr" they are ruining their image; by playing hardball with a mgr that has been underpaid for four seasons and a 46 yr old that is not going to break the bank here or anywhere else. Manuel is not asking that his contract be torn up(he is not being unfair) he is simply asking that the option yr be guaranteed and that they they give him a "golden parachute" of a mere 3 million in the year that he ends his championship career. I know that I have been a little blustery on this blog about the Phils so I'm not going to extend this into a diatribe I'll just let the Manuel action speak for itself....ITS WRONG and its CHEAP, PERIOD...

Did any of you stop to think that maybe negotiations are slow because this can be done at any time in the next 4 months? Like in mid-February? The winter meetings are going on. The last thing Ruben needs to do right now is extend Cholly for 2011. It will get done eventually.

Truth - you are assuming that they are playing hard ball. I have not read anywhere that the Phillies don't want to extend him or are trying to nickel and dime him.

Just sign him, for pete's sake! The guy brought us a WS championship trophy! Give him his just rewards. SAme with Moyer. I hate these games we seem to play. Sounds like the old days. Ruben, act like the GM of championship team!

To all of you who are saying "just sign him give him his rewards" I truly hope you don't run bisinesses. This mentality is what causes the best companies to go broke. There is a difference between throwing away money (spending more then you have to) and not making the time to have serrious conversations towards resolving an issue. From what everyone is saying, the issue seems to be one of time, and not terms. (they can't find time to discuss terms

The Phillies have only so much money they will pay for salaries (players and coaching staff). Winning the World Series generates some marginal revenue, but not more then $10-20 Million. The team's payroll will increase by that amount this year, if only because of increases to arbitration-eligible players. None of us know what Moyer wants,so to blindly say about Moyer (or Manuel) "give him his just rewards" is simplistic. They need to put the best team on the field for $120 MM, and if they overpay Moyer, it will trigger a weakness somewhere else. World Series win, or not, the BallPark only holds 45,000, they can only sell so many tickets, and there NOT going to throw money around, have a $130 MM payroll, and lose money for the owners this year.

Moyer is asking for 20 million over two season, and is frustrated with how the negotiations with the Phils are going. I do like the idea of going after Delmon Young from the Twins to play left, if they don't resign Burrell.
