Charlie Manuel has agreed to a contract extension through 2011.

The Inquirer's Jim Salisbury is reporting from Las Vegas that the Phillies have extended Charlie Manuel's contract through 2011.

The Phillies first picked up Manuel's club option for 2010, then guaranteed 2011.

Manuel, 64, will make $1.5 million next season and $1.7 million in 2010. He was seeking somewhere approaching $3 million in 2011.

Manuel led the Phillies to their second World Series championship in 126 years. He has guided the Phillies to back-to-back National League East championships, the first time they have made the playoffs in consecutive seasons since 1980-81. Since Manuel has been at the helm, the Phillies have had the second-best record in the National League at 354-294 (.546).

Manuel is ninth on the Phillies’ all-time win list.

Not a bad pay day considering he'll never have to pay for a drink in this town again. Congrats Charlie!

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
