Madson to have surgery on broken toe
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
When Ryan Madson broke his right big toe kicking a chair in the visitors clubhouse in San Francisco, the Phillies knew the injury could be serious. A CT scan Monday revealed those fears.
Madson has a complex fracture of the toe and doctors decided it was best for Madson to have pins and plates surgically inserted Tuesday.
Scott Sheridan, the Phillies head team athletic trainer, declined to offer a potential timetable for Madson's recovery until after the righthander has the surgery.
"We really don’t know what that’s going to mean long term," Sheridan said.
Regardless, it appears Madson could miss a significant amount of time.
"We knew it was bad from the beginning," Sheridan said. "It is what it is. It’s not just like a little crack. It has a couple pieces to it."
Madson will have the surgery performed by Steven Raikin at the Rothman Institute. Raikin, a foot and ankle specialist, reviewed the results of the CT scan Monday and decided surgery was necessary. The Phillies could have let the fracture alone to heal, but the pins should help that process, Sheridan said.
Sheridan said the team will have to be creative with Madson's rehab so as to keep his arm in shape. Having the break come on his push off foot makes things challenging, Sheridan said.
"He's in a lot of pain," Phillies assistant general manager Scott Proefrock said of Madson.
Proefrock said the Phillies won't pursue another bullpen arm for now. A lot, he said, depends on how J.C. Romero and Brad Lidge do as their workload increases at the major-league level.
"We’ve got some moving pieces," Proefrock said. "I don’t think it necessarily puts us in a situation where we have to go acquire somebody."
are you serious? bigsteve- What a g.d. idiot.
If, "[t]he Phillies could have let the fracture alone to heal, but the pins should help that process," then why is it that because of surgery Madson is going to be out longer? And why is the doctor and facility who seemingly have a financial stake in whether Madson (or any patient) has surgery making the decision that surgery is necessary??? Isn't that a conflict of interest? A guy needs really surgery for a broken toe from kicking a chair? C'mon. And why is the team trainer - not a physician - commenting on the nature of the break? Ridiculous. Truth B. Told
He should not be paid until he starts to play. In the mean time, he is stealing money. Bobphxville
he sux in the closer role anyway Rocky_Ballbutter
Someone whose control over his emotions is tenuous enough that he would do this is obviously temperamentally unsuited for the closer's role, and possibly for any role at the major league level. Good riddance. jrw723
this guy madson should be suspended and fined lifemaster
CLIFF LEE says he thinks any of these posters who says they haven't kicked something in anger should be the first to cast glasses at stone houses....or something like that... stan the man too
Please let this be the end of his Phillies career. He's worthless. AllDawk_AllTheTime
Perhaps the Phillies could get a package deal on mental health treatment and anger management for Madson and Hamels . publius sempronius tuditanus
He is a Dope. Never liked the guy. Frickin Idiot. Big Ragu- he should donate his 2010 salary to charity. seriously
- Way to help F up the season, Madson. Stupid, idiotic, brainless imbecile. Bob1
I thought Brett Myers didn't play for the Phillies any more. padillaflotilla
I don't know about the suspension part but Madson should definitely be fined, since the injury was self inflicted. Regardless of what Cliff Lee says, guys getting paid millions to play a game should learn enough self control to refrain from doing such stupid things. SteveS11
