On the day the Phillies' closer returns, their interim closer is going on the disabled list.

The injury bug has struck again.

Righthander Ryan Madson has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right big toe suffered after Wednesday's win against San Francisco, the Phillies announced Friday.

Of course, Brad Lidge is returning Friday from the disabled list after off-season elbow and knee surgeries.

To replace Madson, lefthander Antonio Bastardo was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley. He was optioned to make room for Lidge originally.

The wording in the Phillies' release about Madson is interesting. The injury was apparently suffered after Madson's appearance Wednesday. Did Madson kick something in the dugout or clubhouse after he blew his second save of the season? Nothing was visibly noticeable during the game.

Madson's disabled list stint is retroactive to April 29. Madson, 29, has gone 1-0 with four saves and a 7.00 ERA in nine appearances this season.

At this point, Jose Contreras is probably the backup closer to Lidge, should he falter.

Any reason the DL stint isn't retroactive to the day it actually happened?

So they've zoomed past any thought of Baez being able to close, huh?

Another Phillies pitcher that cannot keep his emotions in check. I'd fire Rich Dubee and replace him with a sports psychologist on the coaching staff so that he/she could be in the dugout during the games. Old Man Moyer could serve as the acting pitching coach just as effectively (if not more effectively) than Dubee anyway.

This may be the best thing that could have happened for our BP......no "2-run" Madsen for awhile.....

they should of made it retro-active to before he pitched so he wouldn't blow the save

Too bad Madson didn't whack his head on a metal chair; ...but he probably would have knocked in a couple of runs with the move.

"Injury bug"? Are you kidding? That's like saying Plaxico got bit by the injury bug when his gun went off. Madson's a moron and did it to himself (and the team).

What ever you do, don't call up Mathieson. He needs a couple more years at AAA before he is ready. After all they still have Ruben's Cubans out there. LOL!

Madson's loss is the Phillie's gain. He's been smelling up the place for years.

Madson is not a closer. He was just filling in. When he comes back, he needs to go back to the set up role. Myers and Lee could really help us now. Myers has that attitude that a closer needs. And yes, they need to be a little nuts.

Bringing Myers back. Now that's a good one. Replacing one idiot that put himself on the disabled list with another idiot that did the same thing.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
