SAN FRANCISCO -- The Phillies placed righthander Ryan Madson on the paternity leave list Thursday, meaning they will be without their closer for at least one game against the Giants.
Scott Mathieson was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Madson's spot.
Madson can be on the list, created this season by Major League Baseball, for a maximum of 72 hours. It's unclear if he'll need the entire period because he had already left the team Wednesday to be with his expectant wife in Los Angeles. He was not officially placed on the list until Thursday.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he was unsure when Madson would return. It could be as early as Friday, but probably Saturday.
Brad Lidge closed Wednesday's game against Colorado and Manuel will operate with a makeshift bullpen yet again. He said he will play matchups when deciding upon his closer.
Mathieson has a 2.92 ERA in 24 games at Lehigh Valley. He is here and available for the game.
