Madson placed on DL

Who should be the Phillies’ closer until Ryan Madson returns?
Antonio Bastardo
Michael Stutes
Let’s try a closer by committee

The Phillies bullpen just got even thinner.

Ryan Madson, who has served as closer for much of the season, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right hand. The move is retroactive to June 19, which means Madson could return July 4.

Madson last pitched June 18. He has a 2.03 ERA with 15 saves.

Antonio Bastardo likely becomes the new closer. He'll be the fourth pitcher to hold that role since the beginning of spring training. Brad Lidge, Jose Contreras and now Madson have all spent time on the disabled list.

Righthander Andrew Carpenter was added to the 25-man roster. Since moving to the bullpen during the spring, Carpenter has been impressive. He has a 1.58 ERA in 45 2/3 innings with a sparkling 51:9 strikeout to walk ratio.

The Phillies bullpen now features five pitchers (Mike Stutes, Scott Mathieson, Juan Perez, Andrew Carpenter, David Herndon) who have spent time at triple-A Lehigh Valley this season.

Knew this was coming, yikes. Would rather see the Phils bring up one of those young power arms to see what they can do, but either way, this is not a good situation.

Calling up righty Carpenter was a big no-confidence vote in the left-handed Zagurski.

Indeed, this is not good. Shame they didn't bring Schwimer up though. He has been destroying in AAA. Carpenter has been good too... hopefully he is ready at last.

Isn't that getting to be the norm for Madson?

Yes Ernie, Madson just keeps getting hit by batted balls on his right hand...very perceptive of you to notice...

This is almost a blessing in disguise. If Bastardo shows that he has what it takes, the Phils really don't need to bring back Madson next year because in all honesty, Boras will be asking for the moon plus a few galaxies. But this also puts a spotlight on the need for more bullpen help, because Stutes and Bastardo could be maxed out come September/October with the work they are putting in now.

I wonder if this will lower Madson's price at all. I'd like to keep him around but you are correct that Boras is going to ask for a lot.

A trade for bullpen help seems like a possibility.

They could still option Halladay to AAA, to see if he can further develop his secondary pitches, while still bringing up a big bat.

Hope he didn't punch a wall this time?

Bastardo has been the best arm out of the 'pen this year. Could be an interesting experiment.

lonewolf, I see more meaningful innings in Herndon's future. Can he handle the big stage?

It will now be up to Antonio "The Matador" Bastardo and Michael "Lincecum Lite" Stutes. I wouldn't even be concerned except for Stute's last outing (but maybe good to get a bad one out of the way).

I was kind of hoping that Justin DeFratus would figure it out in the minors, but he's getting assaulted in Triple A, so he's about a year away, at least. Carpenter is definitely a good choice for a call-up. So, from the beginning of the season, we went from Baez, Madson, Contreras, to Bastardo, Contreras, Madson, to Bastardo, Stutes, Madson, and now I'm guessing Carpenter, Stutes, Bastardo? Round and round we go, anyone get the feeling we're hexed with injuries this year?
