MRI shows Brown's thumb injury not serious
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
CLEARWATER, Fla. — Domonic Brown expects to return to action sometime next week after an MRI showed only inflammation in his sprained right thumb.
Brown said he could take some swings in the cage Friday. Much of the inflammation and scar tissue is actually remnants of a similar injury he suffered last May at triple-A Lehigh Valley while diving for a ball.
The 24-year-old outfielder injured his thumb Monday while making an unnecessary dive prompted by a bad route he took to a fly ball. It's the fourth injury since 2009 to his right hand.
"I do everything with it," Brown said. "Hitting, it's my bottom hand. It's tough, especially with the swelling. If it was the top hand, I probably would have been able to play."
Brown is 2 for 8 in Grapefruit League play and has yet to make a sterling impression. The injury only shortened his chance to make his mark.
"I don't think it's bothering it too much," Brown said. "If there wasn't stuff from last year, I probably would have been playing already. That's the setback right now. There's still some inflammation and scar tissue in there. I'll be fine. I'll probably be playing next week."

It's finally time for a road trip longer than 20 minutes. And the Phillies will bring a light travel squad to Lakeland for a 1 p.m. game against Detroit. But Roy Halladay will pitch and he could face that vaunted Tigers lineup (if they play their regulars).
The lineup:
1. Tyson Gillies 8
2. Scott Podsednik 7
3. Ty Wigginton 3
4. Hunter Pence 9
5. Laynce Nix 0
6. Carlos Ruiz 2
7. Hector Luna 5
8. Pete Orr 4
9. Freddy Galvis 6
In relief: Joel Pineiro, David Herndon, Brian Sanches, Jeremy Horst, Raul Valdes
Have a question? Send it to Matt Gelb's Mailbag.
Gillies can fly on the base paths and could be CF of the future. He seems to be born base stealer, gets excellent jumps etc... He would seem to be good leadoff hitter, so I am watching him closely and i think Phils FO is too. I think the Phils are hoping Brown can have big offensive year in AAA so they can move him. I dont there will ever be "routine" fly balls for him and PHils are a pitching team now. SO, you can be giving away runs with his horrific defense. I mean the guy should be able to play "compentent" defense at this stage of his career. Little Leaguers handle fly balls better. Over_Exposed
In observing his fielding inadequacies and they way his hitting skills have dramatically diminished, have the Phillies had his eyesight checked? He may mot be getting a good read on the ball. Just sayin'... Otherwise, maybe the dude's just a clueless tool who doesn't have the intestinal fortitude it takes to be a pro... PhillyPhans10
Yeah, let Brown spend an entire year down in Triple A. beegal99
OverExposed, I have been a Gillies supporter since the trade. He needs to put a full season together. It won't surprised me if he has better success than Brown. Like you said, the kid has excellent speed and is a good defender and has a knack for getting on base. EL Zorro
LebDk4 is probably the same agent Hagen interviewed last year that guaranteed Don Brown was going to have a better season than Pence. LOL. EL Zorro
@LenDyk4: Before we move Hunter Pence to left field to accomodate Dom Brown, let's observe something. Until proven otherwise, Brown is in the Dave Kingman and Adam Dunn class of outfield play. When you run out a potential elite pitching staff out there, defense becomes that much more crucial. Domonic Brown needs vast improvement on either of the corner outfield spots before he's even in the conversation for any type of future plans. Seeing Red
El Z, you are right in all posts.....LenD you couldn't be more wrong....OExposed, et al....after this many years in the minors if Brown can't catch a fly ball now, I doubt if he will in the future. Five tool player? What exactly are they? Run, throw, run again, rake and shovel? With his right hand issues over and over he won't even be able to do the raking and shoveling, let alone be a competent MLB player. Am I ready to give up on him? Pretty close. Sure would like to see Gilles take off this year. I think he has a higher ceilling than Brown because of his head and his heart, and his tools ain't that bad either. Mark1npt- Until we find out what this kid is missing, Dom Brown will always be suspect in the line-up. How long is that??
Zorro hit the nail on the head. Give this guy another year in AAA to learn how to field before making a final decision on him (play or trade). Bottom line is; FO labeled this guy a Superstar way too early and it kind of inflated his head (see quitting Winter Ball and being benched during Ironpigs playoffs). You don't see many 24 yr old Outfielders learning how to catch a baseball in the Bigs! younged
Hello Washington Nationals GM. This Reuben from the Phillies. I would like Anthony Rendon for Domonick Brown. Thank you very much. LJ14
If you are gonna trade D. Brown it has to be for someones "can't miss" third baseman or second baseman. Why does it seem like these stud minor leaguer for stud minor leaguer deals don't get done? blaqjaq
I hear ya, PhillyPhans10 - but you have to wonder: Wouldn't that be a routine test? If it isn't, it sure is logical re: DB! A guy with this much natural ability should be getting better at all these things, not worse. Anybody out there know about vision tests being routine? dwp66
I like the kid....I think he can be a really good ML hitter with a very high OBP...but if you're an outfielder, and you can't chase a ball down correctly or catch when you get to it, there is a problem. Kinda like being a Lifeguard, who can't swim......Granted Burrell and Ibanez weren't GG outfielders but generally they got to a lot of stuff and caught it, even threw out a few baserunners, too. I just don't see even a modicum of a ML oputfielder in DBrown. I hope I'm wrong. 2012 will tell. Mark1npt
I can only wonder if Utley was as inept as Brown when trying to make the team, would there be as many apologists trying to excuse him for lack of talent? Now the Brown Patrol is pleading their case through YOU TUBE. Get a life !
Enough wind and baloney has been wasted on ' Freddy Fumblefingers Brown.'
