Kalas tribute info
Andy Martino
This just came in from the Phillies. Also, I want to thank all of you for emailing so many moving memories of Harry. My Blackberry has been buzzing all day, and each time I'm amazed by the eloquence and depth of feeling. Sorry I can't respond personally to each note, but they were all remarkable.
The Kalas family and the Phillies have announced that a memorial tribute for Harry Kalas will be held at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday, April 18.
An opportunity to pay respects to the Hall of Fame broadcaster will be given on a first come, first served basis to as many fans as possible from 8:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. At that time, all fans in attendance will be directed to seats for an on-field tribute that will begin at 1:00 p.m.
Additional information will be made public as details are finalized.
Funeral services and burial will be private and held early next week.
Uniform Patches
Beginning tomorrow, players will wear HK uniform patches for the rest of the season. The black circular HK patch will be located on the front of the jersey in the area of the heart.
Friday Night
The Phillies return home on Friday night to play San Diego at 7:05. The Phillies will also pay tribute to Harry prior to the game. Fans are urged to arrive early. More details will be forthcoming.

The Phillies organization does a lot of things right. Their handling of the death of Harry Kalas is no exception. Harry Kalas has been calling Phillies games since I was born. For nearly forty years this city has had greatness behind the microphone. He was a hero to many, and a legend to all. This news is shocking and saddening. But where better fitting for harry to die than in a broadcast booth, where he spent so much of his joyous life, preparing to broadcast the game he loved and helped transcend. Thanks to you and everyone covering the situation for doing Harry justice and reverence. He'll be sorely missed. --Shay Roddy shayrod
When are they going to retire his microphone? But really, this is a shock, and the Phillies have done everything to be just as graceful and endearing to the legacy of Harry as they can. I praise the Phillies with how they have been handling this, while I know it has not been easy for anyone there. Skwimua
I grew up listening to By Saam, Gene Kelly, Claude Herring, and Bill Campbell. I thought these guys were good until Harry came along. Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas has to be right up there at the top for ALL TIME GREAT BROADCASTER of baseball games. When Richie Ashburn retired and came up to the booth, what a way to put the topping on a great team of broadcaster's. Harry we all miss you, and we know you are in heaven looking over the Phillies and still broadcasting the games. GOD BLESS YOU HARRY KALAS - A TRULY GREAT ACT, which cannot be followed.l thomasg
I met Harry last Sat night April 11th in Colorado at Coors Field. I grew up in Reading back in the 60's. It was very special to meet him. It was in the clubhouse section close to the announcer's booth. Harry had a Phillies jacket. We made eye contact and I asked for an autograph. He said Absolutely. I called my sons and daughter-in-law over to meet him. He signed my SI with Hammels on the cover. Harry Kalas HOF 2002. I couldn't even talk other than to say I am Honored - probably 3 times. He just smiled and said Thanks. As he walked off he stopped, turned and said with a smile "Go Phillies". Then he went to the smoking section. I of course decided to get a picture. About 2/3rd's of his cigarette was done and we asked for a picture. He jumped out of his chair (no kidding) and we took some photos. Harry Thanked me ( yep ). There was a Colo fan talking to Harry while smoking. The fan asked me who he was. I told him it was Harry. He was in awe and said... man he knows his pitching. I am crushed and have cried at times since then. I simply can't believe the Graciousness of Harry. God Bless you Harry. coloradophillie
Colorado, you are a lucky, lucky man. I am envious of you, but extremely happy for you, as well. Scorekeeper
Harry Kalas was the very best broadcaster I have ever heard........It will be so hard listening to a Phillies game without his voice! My wife and I are deeply saddened by his passing. Harry and Whitey are together again!! Philadelphia will never be the same. R.I.P. Harry. mick
No more "Take me out to the ballgame". Replace it for the rest of the year with "High Hopes" on the scoreboard with Harry singing at the parade. He's calling the games up there with Richie again! What an awesome combo - many memories from my childhood and beyond!!! Dish
i can see it now: Harry Kalas occupying his own place in heaven, just talking, and letting his "heavenly" voice flow out like music. People from all over come to hear him, just to hear him talk and use that fine instrument of his. Stanley Cup

Mr. Kalas was THE voice of my childhood. I would switch from the tv broadcast to the radio to catch every inning of Phillies baseball. How many times I would dance in the shower upon hearing "long drive, deep left-center field...outa here! Home run Micheal Jack Schmidt, or the Bull, or any other Philly slugger. My transistor radio was my constant companion during those muggy South Jersey summer nights. Harry WAS baseball as far as I was concerned. Whitey and he were my heroes and made me want to be a broadcaster. Time and circumstance led me in other directions, although I did spend one summer working for a Vineland station, running the board for the affilates broadcast. It was the late 80's when the team was truly horrible, but listening to Harry's golden voice made every futile evening bearable. Years later, I found myself in Phoenix, and was thrilled to hear THE VOICE calling NFL games for Westwood One. In many ways, it brought me back home. I played hooky from work last May to attend a Phillies-D-Backs afternoon game and found a seat directly facing the Phillies broadcast booth and spent most of the game just watching Mr Kalas work. I spent some time considering how to sneak onto the club seating level in an attempt to meet the man, but, much to my regret, decided to stay seated...how much now do I wish I had at least tried. I'm sorry for rambling, but I'm feeling a huge part of my childhood died this week...aww, you guys know how I feel, so I'm gonna stop wasting your time...cheers Harry, have a drink on me. nj2az
By the way, on April, you guys have to represent! There's no way I'm gonna make it across country but I will be there in spirit to honor the man. Pay respect and tribute for all of us who have moved on, but not really moved on, if you know what I mean. nj2az
I came up with Harry Kalas Field at CB Park MINUTES after reading of Harry's passing. What a great tribute. What, we need another street named for him? Save it for some corrupt councilman. Harry deserves better.RIP, friend. SSAMOM1
I was lucky enough to be in attendance the last night of the World Series. During the celebration Harry made a speech. About have the crows was still there and everyone, players included were silent to hear him speak. It was humorous, talking about the Phillies run through the playoffs including a comment about the Brewers of "C.C. you later" and about everyone saying the Phillies could not get by the Dodgers because of Manny by saying "Manny my Fanny" It was humorous, but you could see the respect everyone had for Harry. It was something I personally will never forget. R.I.P. Harry Kalas geinhaus
how aboout singing high hopes at the seventh inning stretch, would be a great way for a kid 20 years from now to understand harry and keep is memory alive philliescbp1
