Jayson Werth slides past Athletics catcher Kurt Suzuki to score a first-inning run last night in Oakland.

Charlie Manuel wasn't happy that his team scored just four runs last night in a 4-0 victory over the A's, so he continues to tinker with the Phillies lineup.

Check out today's lineup against A's righthander Rich Harden:

1. Jimmy Rollins, SS
2. Chase Utley, 2B
3. Pat Burrell, LF
4. Ryan Howard, 1B
5. Greg Dobbs, 3B
6. Shane Victorino, CF
7. Jayson Werth, RF
8. Geoff Jenkins, DH
9. Carlos Ruiz, C

Here's a look at how some Phillies have been struggling lately.

In the Phillies Notebook, Manuel explained his reasons for last night's lineup shuffle.

Why in gods name is Jenkins playing? Put Coste as the DH, Feliz, anyone!

Manuel shouldn't be happy. The win was great, but Kendrick got it for us. The offense is still the same old story. When we hit home runs, we score in bunches. No home runs means not much scoring(like 4 runs last night).

I agree bski to a point, but I think it's also good to see the team manufacture runs without the HR ball. Seems to me to make the team more well-rounded and also it obviously means that they're working on not leaving too many men base.

What's the over/under on the number pitches Jimmy sees? I'd be crazed if he didn't have an OPS of over .900 on the first pitch this season. Facing Harden isn't going to help Jenkins break out of his funk. Coste needs to be in there. Forget Ruiz. Forget what Coste says about not being an everyday player. Force him to prove it. DH Coste since it's a day game after a night game.

Jenkins belongs on the bench for at least a few days...he's been worthless!

Praise God Almighty, Charlie finally broke up the two lefties Utley- Howard in the lineup. I've been calling for that all year. I thought last night's lineup was only a one time deal. I hope they stick with it. I like Utley in the two-hole.

Can't Howard strike out just as well from the 7th spot as the 4th spot?

Burrell is too slow to bat him 3rd. He's a road block on the base path.

Looking for 2 in a row? Here's how NOT to start: Top of the 1st, K, K, Pop-up. Bottom of the 1st: BB (4 pitches), double, single... I'll stop there, but that leaves us with 2 runs in, a runner on 1st, and ) out. Oh, brother.

I don't get the DH situation. Why wouldn't the slowest player, Pat Burrell, get slotted as the DH? Adam Eaton is terrible, pay him his money and send him on his way. Carrasco must be better, get him up here!

Oakland, CA- Reports that the Phillies offense was sighted Wednesday night in the Bay Area have turned out to be nothing more than rumors. Deep into an afternoon game against the A's on Thursday, there was still no sign of the Phils' bats. Meanwhile, Adam Eaton, while surrendering only 3 runs, has thrown 111 pitches through 7 innings. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the team's hitting is urged to contact Pat Gillick at the Phillies' office.

Adam Eaton did his job today. 3 runs in seven innings is more than a quality start. As we found out last year, the Philles go as J-Roll goes. 3 Ks and an error today in front of the hometown gang. Not that anyone else on the club is doing anything to compensate for Jimmy's lack of production.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
