Lidge to DL

POSTED: Tuesday, June 9, 2009, 1:57 PM

The Phillies have placed Brad Lidge on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right knee, retroactive to June 7, and recalled catcher Paul Bako from triple-A. Bako is expected to be in uniform tonight at Citi Field.

The 32-year-old closer is 0-3 this season with 13 saves, six blown saves and a 7.27 ERA in 28 games.  Lidge blew two saves over the weekend in Los Angeles, and was struggling to identify the problem.  He missed time in April with inflammation in his right knee.

After blowing the save Saturday, Lidge was clearly searching for answers. He has said that while his knee has not healed, it does not affect his pitching.  The Phillies have obviously learned something since Sunday; the word "sprain" is new here. Look for more to come as information becomes available.

Those who have been pushing for Madson to be made closer (I being one of them) finally get their wish. There's no question he has good enough "stuff" to do the job; it's only a question of whether he has the mentality for it. I personally think he'll be fine, but we'll see. As for Lidge, let's hope the time off (I wouldn't be surprised if that's what it is in reality) is helpful.

I see a trade coming and it could be big. Houston Street, Octavio Dotel? They are both available, according to reports. Maybe Bako or Coste will be part of the package. Why call up a weak hitting catcher that happens to hit from the left side when an RH bat is a more pressing need?

Bako, known as a great defensive catcher, frees COste up to become the famed RHB off the bench. SOmething he wans't up until now due to his back up catching duties

People need to stop asking for Marson and Donald - they are not going to bring prospects that they want to play every day up to sit on the bench.

Gee its about time! Should have put Lidge on the DL after the Yankees series! Hope Cholly decides to put the closer's spot in Madson's hands! And make Romero the 8th inning help man!

I predicted two weeks ago that they would DL Lidge when Romero returns. I think this move is more meant for Lidge to fix his sprained brain and also to save him any more embarrassment in NY this week. They should do better than having Coste as the RH bat off the bench, however it is an upgrade over Bruntlett. Who's the closer? I guess/hope it's Madson with JC as the primary setup guy.

The Bridge to Lidge is closed for repairs. Find a detour by opening the Map to Madson.

RAS is 100% right...couldn't agree more. Good for Charlie for having the grapefruits to make this move.

I like you logic Answer333: Coste as an RH bat off the bench, a .229 hitter with 2 HRs in 83 PA. Brilliant!

I don't think that was Charlie's move either. As recenlty as a few days ago he was backing Lidge 100%. This is Amaro's move. That's the problem with Charlie. Sometimes he is too much a player's manager, sticking with players tooo long (see Brunlett and Coste on the team or Jimmy as a lead off hitter).

Ticow, we need three catchers because Coste is at the end of the line and HE blew a save for Lidge against the Yankees with a ridiculous pitch selection and location call against A-Rod The catcher has to make good choices and that one was Leon Lett-like

If we need another lefty bat, why not bring back Jenkins? After all, we're already paying him...

I think that Lidge is tipping his pitches again -- caused major problems in Houston with his head. Let's go to the videotape!

coste needs to go, I understand people love him because of his underdog career and clowns like angelo cataldi hype him up to be this great player, but the guy is at the end of the road.

The difference between Lidge of last year and Lidge of this year can be summed up in one letter - "o." Last year it was "Oh good, Lidge is coming in." This year, it is "Oh God, Lidge is coming in." Hopefully he returns mentally and physically strong.

El Zorro, Coste is a career .282 hitter and is hitting .316 against lefties over the last 3 years. Way to conveniently ignore statistics that don't help your argument. Lidge's mechanics and control have been off all season. The knee has definitely been affecting his performance and they need to get it healed up once and for all. With Romero back, this move makes sense. Bako is probably up for a few days until they hear back from the doctor on Lidge. If he's coming back on the June 22nd or needs to be out longer will affect who they bring up and they aren't going to burn an option for one of their prospects until they know for sure how long Lidge will be out. Getting Mayberry or Donald 2-3 pinch hit ABs over a 2 week period in exchange for burning one of their options would not be a smart move at all.

JimG, I’m not ignoring anything. He started great, hitting .328 as a rookie (that’s mainly why his career BA looks so good), then year after year his avg. has fallen from .279 to .265 to today’s avg. of .229. He is a classic example of players who can’t adjust to the league when the pitchers figure them out. Probably that’s the reason why it took him until he was 33 years old to make it to the Majors. Yes, he is has a career .316 against lefties over the last 3 years, but you are ignoring that he hit .416 in 2007 and this year he is hitting .234.

And don't bring me career numbers when the guy only has just over 700 career ABs and he's been up and down with his splits. He had a better BA against RH (.345) than against LF (.288) in his rookie year. While in this year is only batting 14 points higher against LF (.238) than RH (.224).

I thought that you only burn one option on a player per season, regardless of how many times he goes up and down in that season. If that's the case no option would be lost by recalling Mayberry.

Yes basemen you are correct. You can bring Mayberry up as many times as you one in one season and only burn one option.

Oops baseman, meant as many times as you want.
