options

From the Phillies just a few moments ago:

Right-hander Brad Lidge was activated from the 15-day disabled list, the Phillies announced today.

Lidge, 32, was originally placed on the DL on June 9 (retroactive to June 7) with a sprained right knee.  He made two rehabilitation appearances, throwing 1.0 scoreless inning with two strikeouts on June 20 with double-A Reading and 1.0 scoreless inning with single-A Clearwater on June 23.

In 28 relief appearances this season, Lidge is 0-3 with 13 saves and a 7.27 ERA.

To make room for Lidge on the 25-man roster, left-hander Sergio Escalona was optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley.

I know he's needed but is a 2 game rehab enough? An earlier article said his knee is still swollen.

Let's hope this wasn't a quick-fix rehab. Also, it's time to send down Bastardo and bring up Rodrigo Lopez. Not for today's start. But let's make this the last start for Bastardo. Even if he does well. Let him leave on a high note. Also, don't expect Lopez to perform miracles; it usually takes at least a start or two before pitchers and catchers are on the same page. Finally, let's not be in a hurry to trade away talent. Carpenter and Mayberry seem to me to be expendable.

WTF is Lopez? if you had said, Caprenter, Drubek, or one of the other 4-5 prospects who have pitched well in AA or AAA ball as starters I could understand, but Lopez?

What's with the Phils stocking up with 41 yr vets and AAA teamhas36-38 players?? Time to trade or release Bako, Threasher, Stairs or Coste. Add Park to that loser list. I know we are losing power in Coste, but you have to give up something.

Lidge is the least of our worries now - it would be nice to get to the ninth with a lead at all.

Lopez is a five or (at best) six inning starter who has NOT regained his fastball following TJ surgery. he won a couple in the last two starts but did not blow people away. In a postgame interview with the Morning Call he said he is gradually regaining his stuff, but thats about it. When he was a stud with Orioles ('05 ?) he had a real heater. Carpenter of Drabek are better options. Retention of Trashner is a real mystery.

Question. Escalona has been brought up and sent down 4 times this year. Often you hear that teams will or won't sent players to the minors because they have "options". It is my understanding that a player only has about 3 of these "options" and after that they have to go on the waiver wire, and the team risks losing them. I can't imagine the Phillies would have brought him up for a total of about 3 games in each of the last 2 major league stings if it meant using an "option" each time. Can someone enlighten me on this. Could it be that only one "option" is used per season, so that if a player goes up and down 50 times in the same season, it only counts as one "option". I know that each day in the majors means the player is one day closer to being eligible for salary arbritration, but what I'm asking about is "options". Thanks in advance

I believe once you move him up or down in a year, the 'option' is for the entire year, not each time.

yes Sergio can be brought up and down as many times as they wish this season,We have to remember he was in low a ball last year and has moved up the chain pretty quick. He might be a nice option for next year because I think we will have some new faces in the pen next year. Time for a few changes on this team and we do seem to have a few nice pitchers down there which we did not have last year.

Big mistake on Lidge.....his knee IS still swollen, just not as much as it was 2 weeks ago! Obviously, there is still something wrong inside the knee or it wouldn't be swollen. It will only get more swollen as he walks, travels and plays on the knee. It won't get better being used. He must have significant degenerative changes in the knee. You have to wonder if we'll ever see him finish out this year successfully, let alone the rest of his current contract.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
