Letting It Sink In

Your 2008 world champions. (JERRY LODRIGUSS / Staff Photographer)

Did that really happen?

Did that really happen?

It did. Brad Lidge really threw that 0-2 slider to Eric Hinske at 9:58 p.m. last night at Citizens Bank Park, and Hinske really swung and missed to beat the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 of the World Series, 4-3. The Phillies really are World Series champions.

Believe it.

Savor it.

Un-freaking-believable.

Phil Sheridan asks you to cherish the moments that made this postseason so unforgettable. That would be a smart thing to do because everybody in Philadelphia knows how rare moments like this are. It had been 25 years since Philly enjoyed its last sports championship. It had been 28 since Tug McGraw bounced off the mound at Veterans Stadium.

So enjoy it.

Oh, yeah, parade at noon tomorrow.

*

Bob Ford writes that in perhaps his final at-bat with the Phillies, Pat Burrell came through with the biggest hit of his life.

*

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Bill Lyon writes.

*

John Gonzalez kisses Negadelphia good bye. Gonzalez, Ford and Sheridan wonder where the 2008 Phillies rank among the most beloved teams in city history.

*

Jim Salisbury takes us Inside the Game.

*

How about Geoff Jenkins? He hadn't had a hit since Sept. 28. He had been hitless in three postseason at-bats. But then he ripped a double to right-center field to leadoff the bottom of the sixth inning. ... Chase Utley made a hell of a defensive play in the seventh inning. ... You can be perfect. Just ask Lidge. ... Cole Hamels is World Series MVP. ... Frank Fitzpatrick isn't happy about the alcohol policy at the ballpark because it makes people act like, well, idiots. On that note, it's a shame that some idiots had to light fires and loot a luggage store in Center City. It's too bad morons in the Northeast were throwing beers at police. Unfortunately, people outside of Philly see that stuff on TV and think we're barbarians. ... Fitzpatrick surveys the scene from the stands. ... Joe Maddon some questionable pitching decisions last night. ... Some fans had a brutal night with tickets.

Jeff G: They're free. I believe they just give folks a section & seat number for crowd control purposes. Fans can then watch the parade and ceremony on the jumbotrons at each venue.

I agree with jeff gross. For what it's worth, I think Truth plays a vital role on this blog (not sure how much weight my opinion carries, only having been taking part here for about half the season). As I have said before, every comic book needs a super-villain. :) And Truth, we've all been wrong plenty of times. There's a reason why they play and coach and manage the games, and we merely blog about them. I am sure I was wrong about as many things as anyone else. But let us all not forget, that it is dissenting opinion that drives any good blog (even if Truth manages to offer his in such a way as to really get under our skin, but that seems to be what keeps him coming back). If we all agreed on everything, what then would we have to discuss?

Just got back to NYC after last night's game. Following the Phils since 1963 and don't have the words to deal with what just happened. Just two notes: (1) did you notice that when Madson was pulled, after getting just 2 outs and giving up the tying run, he was CHEERED as he walked off the field, for the great effort he gave all season; and (2)in Game 1 against LA, in standing room on the 300 level in the middle of the 8th inning with the Phils ahead 3-2, the guy next to me said "Isn't it good to feel this good?" and then he tapped the shoulder of the guy in front of us and said "Hey, when's the last time you felt this good?" The guy in front, without any hesitation, responded "1993". I'll bet he feels even better today. I do.

The tickets are free. I managed to score two for the Linc. I was thinking of flying up but I can't afford 236.00 for a roundtrip. So I am willing to part with them. If interested hit me up at debwork69 at hot mail dot com

Norma, I am very disappointed with the way the ticket situation for tomorrow worked out. I logged on right when it came online, and it sat in a "queue" for 20 minutes and came back with squat. Now I am SOL. There had to be a better way - especially for season ticket holders!!!!

Varsho: Actually, I only need the one. My lady is Day of Game Staff for the Phils, so she will be working the event at CBP tomorrow, ergo, I am flying solo into the Linc. If you want the other, I'd be happy to meet up somewhere beforehand and let you have it.

RWR - appreciate the thought, but I won't be traveling solo, but thanks anyway.

Hey, I'm all for dissenting opinions. I'm even all for flat out arguments, when they're kept on point and respectful. What I'm not for is annoyance for annoyance's sake, baiting just to get a reaction, and points that swing so wildly from bizarre to logical that it's hard to believe they come from the same person. For example, I'm fine with a discussion of race in sports, but what we had numerous times this season was the injection of race where it had no place. But look, I didn't intend to make this a topic of discussion. I was just responding to an earlier comment. I'm in way too good of a mood to devote and more time to it.!

Just thought I'd offer. See how a Championship brings us all together, though?

I'm not a season ticket holder, but the Daily News says that the rally tickets were opened to them first, then to the general public at 3.
