Kendrick sent to minors
Andy Martino
The Phillies today optioned RHP Kyle Kendrick to the minor leagues, where he will likely pitch for the Triple A Lehigh Valley IronPigs. This ends Kendrick's attempt to begin the season as the Phillies' fifth starter, of course. They also optioned C Lou Marson and INF Brad Harman. We'll do everything we can to speak with Kendrick before he leaves.
Keep checking for updates.
Also, Curt Schilling is hanging up the bloody sox.
UPDATE 2:55
Kendrick spoke to reporters in front of his locker about an hour ago. He was composed and focused on developing his secondary pitches and returning as a starter. "I know what I need to do to get back here," he said.
Although Carlos Carrasco remains in camp, he will likely begin the season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. So the race for teh fifth starter is down to J.A. Happ and Chan Ho Park. Park said this morning that his hamstring was fine, and that he would pitch tomorrow against Toronto. Happ has allowed two runs and five hits in five innings against the Yankees today.
Thanks Myers! Kendrick hasn't been the same since that practical joke about him going to Japan. rico brogna
He hasn't been the same because he isn't good. FlyerFan21
Allentown is lovely in the summer. lancastermike
I like Kendrick's mental makeup, but he just hasn't shown enough stuff. He also benefitted from hitters not having seen him, not tape on him, and once they got a book on him his effectiveness declined quickly. bark
don't bother trying to speak to him .... Repeat08
Do they have a psychiatrist on staff at Lehigh Valley? I think KK needs about 3 sessions per week. B in DC
Well Kendrick and Marson are improvements over most of the other candidates that I will be paying to see at Coca Cola park... the talent level we had last year (especially the first half) was downright atrocious. Now we will have Carrasco, Marson, Jason Donald, Kendrick, etc. so at least we will have some legit talent to see. MattPSU
Pat Combs......Tyler Green......Kyle Kendrick......etc....... GreenReaper- Bottom line is he just didn't get the job done. Kendrick had Eatonesque numbers the second half last year. I wish him luck and maybe he'll be up here again.
No shock...he does not have the mental toughness to compete yet. Still uncertain if he is major league material. He should have gone to college.. t8034mc1
Poor kid. He kinda reminds me of Gavin Floyd. They both have that same deer-in-headlights look on their faces all the time. BLH

At least he knew he wasn't getting punked by Myers again....the kid is no Pat Combs or Tyler Green, he can actually pitch. CMc62480
Dude, that is no Gavin Floyd...Floyd of 4 yrs ago without the stuff, maybe...you posted that stuff before, don't suppose you noticed that Floyd just signed a 4 yr deal for $15.5 mill and went 17-8 last year? PhillySubsMac
Ok - 1. Stop with the Myers prank. Myers punking Kendrick has nothing to do with the fact that Kyle Kendrick can only throw one Major League-caliber pitch, his sinker, which is average at best. 2. Stop with the Gavin Floyd. Floyd was a legit prospect with good stuff that the Phillies wrecked mentally, who needed to move, and did. Kudos to Floyd for getting himself straight and pitching well in Chicago, but he is a completely different situation. Kendrick is not Gavin Floyd. Gavin Floyd can pitch; Kyle Kendrick can't pitch. Period. 3. Am I the only one who remembers that, even though Tyler Green was a top draft pick who did not live up to expectations, he did make an All Star team? How is he comparable to Kendrick, who was not a high pick, was never expected to do well in the majors, had some limited success when hitters didn't know him and he could throw sinkers down in the zone early in the count to get ahead and force them to be defensive, but once the league caught on to his 1-pitch repertoire, became completely ineffective? How? Kendrick stinks. Send him to the minors to cultivate his 2nd, 3rd and 4th crappy pitches, and trade or release him when no one is looking in a move that will get no press. Let's move on to the fact that whoever IS going to be the 5th starter is going to have (refreshingly) actually earned it. RollinsWasRight
GREENREAPER.......Can't forget about Carlton Loewer, Brandon Duckworth, etc....We could go on and on can't we? bski
So the race for teh fifth starter is down to J.A. Happ and Chan Ho Park.........Looks like either Jeff Gross is writing Andy Martino's articles or he actually IS Andy Martino.....TEH is a dead giveaway, LOL! bski
bski---I noticed the "teh" also! LOL! Hope Kendrick can gain some experience and increase his pitch repertoire. Be nice if he could return to the big leagues soon. KarenA
Gavin has emerged as a staff ace in Chi-town and just signed a 4 yr $16 mil contract to show for it......he stunk here too......or maybe it was his instructors? They kept trying to change him too....look where it got him? Run out of town as a loser unable to learn and harness his raw talent.....he goes to Chicago, everybody just leaves him alone to pitch, he does it his way and succeeds! What a novel approach....you'd think we'd learn something from that and apply it to other pitchers as well. Mark1npt
kendrick belongs in the minors. he's always been a stiff who's gotten great run support. park or happ should be major upgrade. snakeplissken
Tyler Greene was the best of the 3, he just couldn't stay healthy. Combs was horrendous, even when healthy. ematusko
At least Brandon Duckworth bought us Billy "Big Mouth Bass" Wagner. Still not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. :) But let's please not compare the current Phillies to the mistakes of the Lee Thomas and Ed Wade-era Phillies (although Gavin Floyd was certainly a train wreck for which the current administration bears some responsiblity). The current incarnation of the Phillies has been doing much better, and tehcnically, they were not wrong on Kyle Kendrick...they didn't think he could be a Major League pitcher, and he is not. The surprise was not when he got hit around last year, the surprise was when he incomprehensibly succeeded in 2007. Nice kid, wish him well, but he is not (currently) a Major League starting pitcher. RollinsWasRight
bski - if he starts writing about Jamie "Moyers" and Jimmy "Rollings" then we will know for sure that it's jeff gross!!! RollinsWasRight
KarenA & RWR.......Since Jeff has yet to refute it, maybe we're onto something. At the least, it bears further scrutiny, no? bski
Pat Combs, Tyler Green and Gavin Floyd were all 1st round draft picks that didn't pan out for us. Kendrick wasn't a 1st round pick and wasn't a highly touted prospect either. He just got thrown into the rotation straight from AA because we had a lot of injuries and they didn't want to waste an option for one of their real prospects. He only stuck around as long as he did because the offense usually carried him to wins which masked his lack of readiness for the majors. Frankly, Combs, Green and Floyd all had MUCH better stuff than Kendrick...not even close. But everyone in the majors can throw 90 (except Moyer, lol) and has at least decent stuff. The mental part of the game is what derailed those other prospects and skipping Kendrick over AAA hurt his mental development as well. He needs to learn how to be a pitcher, not a thrower, and the majors isn't the place to learn on the job unless you've got Joba Chamberlain-type stuff. This is the best thing for him. Maybe he'll go to AAA, work on his change-up, develop it into a big-league quality pitch and either be back with the Phils or become decent trade bait. JimG
RWR....agree about Kendrick. Here are Kendrick's minor league numbers: Hits/9: 9.7, HR/9: 0.7, BB/9: 2.8, K/9: 6.3, WHIP: 1.39.....now let's compare that to Hamels: H/9: 5.2, HR/9: 0.1, BB/9: 3.3, K/9: 12.4, WHIP: 0.95........I'm not saying that Kendrick was thought of as anywhere near the prospect that Hamels was, just that you can get a pretty good idea about a guy's major league possibilities by looking at his minor league numbers. bski
JimG....let's see about Combs and Green. Here are their minor league numbers......Combs: H/9: 9.5, HR/9: 0.8, BB/9: 3.6, K/9: 5.5, WHIP: 1.46.......Green: H/9: H/9: 8.9, HR/9: 1.0, BB/9: 3.9, K/9: 6.2, WHIP: 1.42.....Floyd I can go with a bit more. His numbers were a bit better than Combs and Green....H/9: 8.2, HR/9: 0.7, BB/9: 3.4, K/9: 7.1, WHIP: 1.29...but still not predictive of a fantastic major league career (and nowhere near Hamels, btw). The thing with Floyd is that he WAS touted as being a big time prospect. Floyd was supposed to be the right-handed pillar of our rotation. He and Hamels were supposed to be co-number one starters for a decade. Floyd just never put up the numbers in the minors to make me believe this. bski
