Kendrick optioned to triple-A
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
ST. LOUIS -- It begins.
Eleven days before the trading deadline, the Phillies have made their first roster move. Righthander Kyle Kendrick was optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley after allowing seven runs in five innings in Monday's loss to the Cardinals.
Replacing Kendrick on the roster is righthander Andrew Carpenter, who was recalled. It's unknown if Carpenter will take Kendrick's next turn in the rotation, which is scheduled for Saturday against Colorado at Citizens Bank Park.
Kendrick was 5-4 with a 4.82 ERA in 20 games for the Phillies. He showed flashes of quality pitching, especially in May when he was 3-1 with a 3.13 ERA. He had a horrid first month but had a 4.04 ERA in 84 2/3 innings since.
In fact, since May 1, Kendrick has arguably been the Phillies' third-best starter. Consider:
Jamie Moyer: 7-7, 4.78 ERA, 86 2/3 IP, 72 H, 15 HR
Joe Blanton: 3-5, 6.21 ERA, 87 IP, 108 H, 16 HR
Kendrick: 5-3, 4.04 ERA, 84 2/3 IP, 84 H, 12 HR
Carpenter, 25, was 7-6 with a 3.41 ERA for Lehigh Valley. He began the season on the Phillies roster but did not appear in any games. It would be surprising if Carpenter simply replaces Kendrick in the rotation. Another move is likely coming, whether it's a trade or promotion.
Not to say Carpenter hasn't pitched well for the IronPigs. If we take the same time measurement, Carpenter has a 3.11 ERA in 84 innings at triple-A since May 1.
Another possibility to join the rotation is lefthander J.A. Happ. Happ will make another start at triple A on Tuesday night. Happ has a 5.59 ERA in 19 1/3 triple-A innings in 2010.
More to come...
It's about damn time. KK is a lost cause. He's a head case. He's Lidge Jr. PSU DEJA BLUE- Good move, this kid doesnt have the mental toughness for playoff run. He was tossing 83mph batting practice fastballs right over heart of plate. What did he think Pujols was gonna do with it? Hopefully, moves are coming and Brown is coming up, Happ is coming up and Maybe Carpenter is getting moved or maybe a start. I wish they hadnt DFA's figgy, he looked good. Figgy could have spot started in place of Moyer or Blanton.
Kendrick was one of the pitchers Amaro kept at the expense of Lee, and look how that ended up. crboyle1

KyKen is a 5th---what do you want---he isn't the sole reason this team is fading, come on now! Romus
Better not resurface AGAIN as a potential 2011 contender for the 5th starter role. OUTTA HERE........... for good I hope. shalljt
When does Eagles training camp start? gmr18901
I really hope whatever brainless Amaro odes he does to make this team better and not out of despiration. The Lee trade haunts Amaro and I bet he is kept up at night by it. Bob65S
Whatever PSU, he did a good job for a 5th starter. He did a good job considering he doesn't have an "out" pitch... phigglesfan75
If Happ is coming back, I hope he has his control problems figured out... phigglesfan75
give Carpenter a chance to shine. let the bats wake up, there's still over 2 months to play. DIRTYMONEY
Typical Amaro move. Just like with Figgy he gets rid of KK because it costs him nothing dollor wise. Blanton and Baez have huge fat contracts thatnks to Rube so they are not going anywhere. Rube is so predictable in his thinking. Bob65S- Fine. Now at what point does Amaro start to actually upgrade the team? What else is coming, Gelb?
crboyle1: your an idiot, kk wasnt even on the roster during the playoff run last year, and if happ didnt get hurt KK would be in the minors right now... he had nothing to do with Lee.. you people are complete morons... the reason Lee isnt here is because amaro didnt want to give him a 6 year deal... and 5 years from now when halladay is 39 aqnd lee is 38 i am guessing that it will have been a good move.. learn baseball before you try to talk about it.. and let go of lee he is gone... let out a few tears and move on... he was great but he is gone... bleed green forever
We need to play 685 ball from here to the end to get in Possible but not likely!!! tamgin43

this should have happened weeks ago templeowl08
When Kendrick was off, he was horrific. Witness Monday night. He throws BP, and the good teams hit him hard. Carpenter may not be a solution, but Kendrick certainly isn't. He's no more than a triple-A pitcher. farside37
I agree that this is the most frustrating spell for this team in a few years but is everyone really giving up on them? Chutley26
carpenter is only filling in until Happ is ready or Ruben acquires Brett Myers or Ben Sheets. michael2_19030
The reason for this move was to redirect the fans away from the team losing 4 of the last 5 games after the break. This team has issues on all level, from offense to starting pitcher and to the bull-pen. Let hope for the Braves and the stinking Mets go into a long slump so this team can catch-up. abba

Unless Carpenter can hit, he is not going to help much. It's not the pitching....KK was an average 5th starter in the NL....it's the hitting. Wake up Phillies bats! Phront_Runner
bleed green forever - before calling someone an idiot it is highly recommended that you learn the difference between "your" and "you're". KK got left in there for too long last night and now he's paying the price. He's pitched better than Fat Joe. F. Harry Stowe- The days of Eagles chants at Phillies games might be returning.
bleed green: well said. templeowl08- Why not heavy B???????
Why haven't they called Happ back up? TheRallyCap- By my count, the Phils were 9-8 in games started by KK. In one of the losses, Kendrick threw 8 shutout innings. Those are fine numbers for a #5 starter. He is inconsistent, no question, but he isn't the problem. Even if he was the problem, Andrew Carpenter isn't likely to be the answer. jfar86
crboyle1, you are not serious are you? Feeding Kedrick to the Lions at the zoo would have had no impact on Lee remaining with the club. If Happ were healthy, Kendrick would have been back in A-town long ago. I wish Lee were with the Phillies, but I am not going to be stupid about it. thephan
Will it ever occur to Charlie that he can take a pitcher out before four or five runs have been scored? JayW
it has to be happ coming back...he replaces kendrick and takes his spot in the rotation - in the meantime you have another arm in the bullpen...Carpenter? I guess...this is not a sake'em-up kinda move anyway...that would be bring up brown and have him platoon with Ibanez and Werth potentially - i dont care that he has not played left field....if Greg Luzinski and Pete Incaviglia can play left field then an athletic 21 yr old studd can.... roddieb
iron giant - that would be true if we had an eagles squad worth cheering about. templeowl08
f.harry: sorry didnt know i was in english class, YOU'RE A MORON!!! where in my statement did i say anything about his performance last night? in fact, when did i say anything bad about KK, I just simple pointed out to one of YOU'RE fellow IDIOTS that he had nothing to do with the Lee trade... Learn how to read and thanks for coming out... bleed green forever
Phiggles fan, Happ's ERA this season and your baseball knowledge are the same. Kendrick is a number five starter for...the Pittsburgh Pirates. It is still difficult to get past the Lee trade. Halladay, Lee and Hamels 1-2-3. Can you imagine? They would not have had to score many runs. You get very few opportunities to have starting pitching like this and Amaro either had his hands tied or thought he was smarter than everyone else. This team would have been much better and very difficult to deal with in the post season. syddan26

Moyer vs Carpenter (the one from St. Louis) Another loss tonight boys and girls! rjernee- I know Kendrick has been shaky at times, but So has Blanton and Moyer. They however are making to much money to be sent down. Unless the Phils are planning another move behind this, it seems like things are coming apart at the seems for Amaro and Company.

KK is going to be part of some kind of trade package. Book it. Something else is brewing.... Nigel#1
Glad to see the bandwagon losing weight, though I wish the team was doing better. I was pulling for KK, but he is a #5 at best; at least the second coming of Brandon Duckworth isn't in the cards at the moment. Honestly, I actually prefer it when only true fans follow the team. Winning does have it's downside... Timmy
If they are going to send Kendrick down to Lehigh Valley, when are they going to send Blanton, Lidge, Moyer, Madsen and Baez down, too? I think someone is trying to make Kendrick the fall guy for pretty bad mediocre pitching by some of our so called "better" pitchers. Why you're at it, Francisco, Dobbs and Werth could use a little time there, too. As I have said before, Ruben needs to be getting rid of "bad" contracts before he needs to be acquiring new players. All of the names above, and Ibanez, should be trade bait even if it is only a salary dump. There is a time to buy and a time to sell. It is the time to sell to shake-up this team. RunningTheBases
.685 ball? We are 3 games out of the wild card.... Also, how many more fastballs RIGHT down the middle of the plate is Werth going to look at? What happened to "Look fastball and adjust to everything else" elfman

Should have kept Figgy if you were going to demote KK. I would trade him while he still has some value. There are a bucket of balls waiting to be used for batting practice somewhere. Don't forget, Ed Wade is stupid enough to give you something for him. alihajishank

rearranging deck chairs on the titanic..pointing out how bad Moyer and Blanton have been shouldnt be used as an argument for keeping Kendrick... Happ's control is fine- 84 mph in hittable zones...thats why he's still in the minors jim715
Unless you have the money of the Yankees or Red Socks it's hard to be competitive for the top spot each year. A three year cycle is about right. Teams age, guys get hurt, opponents improve, managers and general managers make bad decisions, umpires make bad calls, players start to press or to lose their appetite for hustling, sliders don't bite, and opponents really come after you with dogged purpose. Good trades are essential but even more so the farm system needs to be productive. Tinkering at the margins with this team won't do it. A large infusion of new blood is necessary. A championship this year? No. prudential2
bleed green forever: Lee did not stay because the owners did not want him to stay. He was already under contract for 2009. The Phils did not have to give him anything to play here this year, other than his $9 million salary. he is free agent at the end of THIS year. Better get your facts straight before you start ripping other posters, moron. 23
Lee was already under contract for 2010. 23
Sorry to say but KK looked like a deer caught in the headlights last night . Hopefully, he can get his confidence back . Joe R.
Not a good sign that Happ was not called up to replace KK. What's wrong with JA Happ??? I am guessing we may not see him again this year. KK stinks.....as does Blanton. Not sure how this team can make a playoff push w/ this pitching staff. Tar Heel 1
bleed green forever: "YOU'RE A MORON!!!... YOU'RE fellow IDIOTS" - that is an actual quote from YOUR post. YOU'RE the moron. Ha ha. Stupid people are funny. 23
when will aumont be ready? jim715- This is a smoke and mirrors move. I'm not a Kendrick fan in the least -- in fact, I have always thought he is a minor league pitcher with a major league ego. That said, I think he is being used as a scapegoat in this situation. He certainly wasn't the most horrid member of the team and if this sets a precedent, then the Iron Pigs will be loaded with Phillies players by the end of the season. Izzie
Next move should be to just cut that fat, ugly, redneck slob Joe "Bland". baabyrrej
Blanton should have gone down before Kendrick. However, to send Blanton down, there's a number of things that have to happen first. Because Blanton has over 5 years of service, he cannot be optioned down directly (same goes for Moyer). To send him down, he must be waived first. If someone claims him, the Phils either let him go to the new team (including his full salary), work out a trade, or pull him back and keep him. If Blanton clears waivers, the Phils can then try to send him to Lehigh Valley. Blanton can accept the assignment or refuse it. If he accepts, he can only be there for 20 days due to the CBA. If he declines it, he becomes a free agent. If that happens, the Phils are on the hook for his salary, and any team can sign him at a discounted rate, as the Phils are required to pay his salary based on his current contract less what he gets in the new contract. That's the only reason Kendrick went down. They can send him down and not face consequences for it. buttermilk67
bleed green forever - "YOU'RE fellow IDIOTS" - you still didn't get it right. Go back to 6th grade will ya? Lee at 38 will be better than anyone besides Halladay on the current staff. F. Harry Stowe
I don't think they will trade KK now. If they were going to they significantly lessened his trade value by sending him down now. I think they are hoping that he can pull it together at Reading and then trade him in the off season. F. Harry Stowe- I agree Kendrick is the fall guy here… I think they should have given Kendrick another chance. Why? Since April, he had a 5-2 with a 3.64 ERA in 12 starts before last night game. The Phillies are 8-4 in those 12 starts. He had a complete game against Pittsburgh in his next to last outing before the break, then allowed just one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings against the 1st place Cincinnati team in his final start. But guess what, the first game coming out of the break was given to Moyer, who got hit harder than a pinata. Charlie and Dubee seem to like playing games with young pitchers while keeping an old man in the rotation. Go figure. EL Zorro
- Aside from last night he has looked like a decent #4. There are definitely teams in the majors that would be happy having him. Time to trade him for some prospects or A prospect?
After watching KK pitch in Spring Training games, I really thought that having Halladay mentoring him was going to have a sustainable positive impact. Was I wrong. Unless there is a major injury situation or he somehow gets his head screwed on right, I suspect we've seen the last of him in Philly. dri_as_a_bone- Phillies seem convinced that fat Joe will be fine in the second half, so I think we're stuck with him in the rotation. But I'd feel a hell of a lot better if he and Moyer were 4-5 and there was a Haren, Oswalt or Lilly in that No. 3 slot behind Halladay and Hamels. More likely? Sheets: a guy due $4 million or so on his 1-year deal. Management won't let Rube take on a big contract (otherwise Lee and his $9 million salary would still be here). jpk
People who comment saying that Ruben Amaro regrets trading Lee need to get filled in. Never, ever, could he have thought it was a GOOD move for the team to get rid of a top 10 pitcher in MLB. He did it for salary reasons. You don't think he would want Halladay, Lee, Hamels... ? tpcapone30
Right on bleed green, its over, let him go tards!!! Rays trash- KK is no where near as bad as Baez. Too bad we're paying Baez through the nose for being terrible. I hope KK can get a bit of experience in AAA and come back stronger. I think he may turn out to be quite a decent pitcher.
not defending Blanton or Reuben, but Blanton did have a real nice second half last year, so there is hope, and it wasnt Amaro who traded Gio and Floyd for Freddy"no physical" Garcia..those 2 should be our cheaper 4 and 5 starters right now... jim715
blled green: Right on! gophils1
Well, I guess now Pedro can get up off his couch and start stretching. riles1875
Carp and his 88 mph fastball is major league batting practice. He is a younger less impressive version of Joe Blanton. Let's hope he is not here too long! Dull
Here an idea. HIT THE BALL not just out of the ballpark and not into a fielder's glove and then the pitching will not look so bad. Also don't get strikes (looking) at heart of the plate JW. the prospect of more money changes players. We have a problem with the simple 3 step process of "get'em on, get'em over and get'em home" Home runs are nice but not all runs need to be homers. Once hitting get better so will the pitching not say will still don't need to go after another starter pizzacheeks
Kendrick should have been pulled last night after giving up the first home run. You could see he had lost his stuff. Charlie is a master at making pitching changes after it's too late. Look at Larussa in the 7th inning last night. Howard singles with 2 outs and he brings in a righty to face Werth, even though they were up by 4 runs. He manages, he doesn't just throw the team on the field and hope for a win. This team has covered his mistakes for years, but now it's time for him to do his job, but he can't. I appreciate what they have accomplished over the past couple of years, but that doesn't mean we should accept anything less than the best on the field. Salaries go up, ticket prices go up and the quality of play should go up too. nate- Vasquez, Sheets, or Nolasco, and a closer....Trade? Werth, Blanton, Victorino, Valdez, Contreras, Lidge, Ibanez. Bring up Brown with Carpenter....Where are Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, and Tug McGraw (RIP) when you need them?
- This team is a goner this year. The bats just don't have it. Two years in a row in the WS and pundits telling them that there will be a thrid visit just played on them. I actually understand their lack of desire - hope like heck-golly it returns with fury NEXT season.
Amaro, Charlie and Dubes ruined Kendrick back in spring training all for the almighty dollar (Moyer's $8 million contract). I blame the organization, this is not the first time they have degraded a player within the organization, at the expense of a veteran who is owed major dollars, then see the talent go somewhere else and shine. This group does not know how to motivate, instill pride and build confidence, period. Think Kendrick is the only one, how about Happ's treatment. Did they keep Blanton in minors to get stronger, no sir, owed him too much money, wasn't even close to being ready. But Happ, well now he hears all their negative bs and Blanton's numbers are worse than his and Blanton still pitching, oh yes he is a second half pitcher, no it is about the money. Might as well trade trio* Happ, Kendrick and Carpenter, Phils have no plans to use them. Remember Happ and Kendrick are two of the reasons the Phils did well in 07, 08 and 09, Amaro even said without their contributions, they probably wouldn't have made playoffs. Hmm, so how do two guys go from champs to chumps, no organizational support and afraid to deal with veteran players during contracts. Take a look at what the Braves do and did. Their shortstop, a guy who was to be their anchor for years to come, gone..didn't fit in and they wanted a winner and went out and got one. How about the Yankees, letting go the World Series MVP, Damon and now Java soon to be traded, where are they now, about to return to WS. Hmm would Phils do the same with Werth, exit stage right with his negative body language and "I can't figure it out" attitude and enter Brown, with more enthusiam and right now better numbers. And while we are at it, if not using the trio* trade them for Oswalt and Cory Hart and put Lopes in Manual's position and Moyer in Dubees' spot (Moyer may not be able to pitch due to age, but knows what it takes to pitch at the bigs). And resurrect this season. FanThru It All

would a trio of low-ceiling prospects be enough to get cliff lee back? maybe tyson gillies, jc ramirez, and philippe aumont? jodya2
FIRE AMARO NOW - he is trashing this team. JB215
Send pitching coach Rich Dubee to the minors. The person who holds this job should be able to teach and lead the pitchers to improve. I.e. Duncan in St Louis, Johnny Podres of Phils, Roger Craig, Johnny Sain. Name ONE Phils pitcher you could say has improved with Dubee? Maybe Happ last year. Hamel has recovered some this year, but he still isn't ready to repeat as a World Series/playoffs MVP. joedoakes

GET OVER THE LEE THING! They didn't make the trade, it was a questionable non-trade, but absolutely nothing can be done about it. There's no sense in wasting your breathe (or typing) and still complaingin about it. There are other things to concern ourselves with, such as the current pitching, lack of hitting and possible moves. And to the person who asked about the Eagles...the Phils are still bringing more excitement and titles than the guys in green. And please...STOP THE EAGLES CHANTS AT GAMES. If you hate the Phils that much, then get your loser self out of the ballpark and make room for true fans. aisaac- wow! that was a quick move ... something is definitely in the works.
- In 5 years Lee will be 36 moron BLEED GREEN FOREVER. I am so tired of people making up facts to suit their argument. You people on managments side buy into the ridiculous argument that it had to be either or with Halladay and Lee. You people are missing the boat completely. The people who are complaining about Lee dont understand why Amaro traded Lee to Seattle for nothing in return. He gave up good prospects for Lee and we had the opportunity to keep him for a full year and a half at an affordable 9million per season. WHY trade him then? WHy give BLanton an extention of 8 million per year for 3 years? Plus we could have had both Halladay and Lee and at end of season if F.O doesnt want to try and resign LEE then you get two high compensatory picks for him. Heck, the Yankees offered Montero for him who is a top 3 rated prospect. No, fans are mad that Phillies front office had opportunity for greatness and Amaro tried to outsmart everyone and trade Lee. He signs Blanton, trades CY Young Lee and let Myers walk. Now, the Phils 3, 4,5 pitchers are killing us when this problem never should have happened. Then we could have focused on bench and bullpen which would have gave them a legit shot at another Playoff berth. Instead, Amaro is looking for starting pitching when it should have been our biggest strength. Having a rotation with Halladay, Lee, Hamels,Myers,5th could more easily withstand an offensive slump like the one the Phils offense is going through. Plus, Pitching wins championships, I dont trust Amaro to make right moves, Howard extention was stupid. Adrian Gonzalez is gonna be available and we could have had him for less than Howard, and he can field his position, and probably hit 50HR a year playing in CBP. He will hit over 40 HR this year playing in worst hitters park in baseball. Imagine having Chase Utley, followed by Adrian Gonzalez, Stupid Amaro!!!
To bleed green forever- I have to disagree with you over the 6 year vs. 5 year contract. Being stuck with Cliff Lee for 6 years instead of some of the garbage they have on the roster now and the minors (nothing)is a problem I wish we could have. There is still 2 months left but the injuries sank this ship and w/out a great second half move like last year...they are DONE. Like someone else mentioned this will be a dark cloud over Amaro's tenure unless he can get them back to where they were when he took over. The Eagles are happy Amaro is GM and people are getting excited for football again. phillycop
Why are some of you so determined to bring Brown up? He is still a kid and isn't going going to be the savior of this team. They need starting pitching not the rookie Brown. The only way he get's called up is if Werth get's traded for starting pitching. That will probably depend on how we do the next 8 games. If we get blown away I expect them to trade Werth for prospects, knowing full well they can't afford to sign him long term. bobf876- I agree, That Dubee is a bad pitching coach. He needs to speak up and lets his voice be heard when his pitcher is DONE. So tired of Dubee and ole Cholly letting starting pitching dig the offense into a 5-7 run hole before ole Cholly wobbles out there to pull the plug. Sometimes your pitcher doesnt have his good stuff, Kendrick was lobbing 83mph fastballs over the heart of the plate, gee I wonder what Pujols is gonna do with that beach ball. Phils offense has covered up alot of Cholly's poor coaching ability. The Phils fundamentals are lacking and alot of poor decision making going on out in the field.Runners arent being moved, no situational hitting, not hit and runs, no stolen bases. Dont let guys hit into inning ending rally killing double plays. Tell Werth , Victorino and Rollins to steal some bases, get a good jump, I thought Davie Lopes was the basestealing guru? Phils attitude reflects their lazy, laid back manager. Urgency comes from the top down and the manager can insert urgency with play calling. Try a suicide squeeze with a man on third and one out, try a double steal with guys on first and third, get creative for gosh sakes, its now the second half of the season, wake up CHOLLY. IF Phils finish third, hopefully F.O will retire old Cholly, isnt he ready to spend some time with his family?
over_exposed: WOW well done fella, he is 32 so in 6 years how old will he be? do you need a calculator? and i said 6 years not 5! please someone tell me when i said it was a good move to get rid of lee???? i simply responded to the moron that said kendrick is the reason lee is gone!!! that is it... i want lee here, but i see why they got rid of him, was it a bad move??? of course it is now, i am saying when he is 38 in 6 years (over_exposed pay attention) maybe it would be good to not have 20 million wrapped up in him... but right now its a horrible move.. i agree... i just dont think any player caused them to trade him, i think they could get an extension with his agent and decided to get something for him... bleed green forever- KK is a decent pitcher. He just made some fat pitches now and then. This is going to hurt his confidence. Bad move. Get Cliff Lee, sign Werth to a long term contract! NOW !!
- NO Blead GREEN, HE was only 30 when he was offered deal and turned 31 yrs durin middle of season. YOu do the math Hallady is 34 will be be 37 when is contract is up. Lee would be younger when his 6 yr deal was up. But that is besides the point, it was never supposed to be an EITHER OR Thing. Lee was on the payroll for a cheap 9 million dollars this season. This is the same amount that Blanton and Moyer will make. Lets see, Lee,Moyer or Blanton at the same price. Lee was a bargain and the Phils were so lucky to have a CY YOUNG Pitcher for only 9 million. Halladay makes 20 million and thier ERA when the season is done will be about the same. Phils had chance for greatness and instead offered Boom BOOm Blanton a three extention for 24 million, THen offered Howard a 125 million dollar extention when he still had two years left. That money could have went Lee IF they Phils wanted to sign him longterm but fact is Lee was undercontrol for this year for 9 million. At which time they could have recieved two high first round comp picks for Lee. Or Made trade like Seattle DId and recieve MLB ready prospects like Montero from Yanks or Smoak from Rangers. Phils could have had once in a generation rotation and Amaro tried to outsmart everyone.
The Phillies would get less for Werth in a trade than they got for Cliff Lee, and the Phillies got less in return in the Cliff Lee trade than the Flyers got yesterday when they traded Simon Gagne for a no-name defenseman and a 4th round draft pick. The Phillies need to keep Werth, bat him lead-off, move Rollins to 7th or 8th in the order, and include Victorino in a deal for Roy Oswalt. Freedom Fries
Lets face it, Amaro is Ed Wade in a different shirt. When he traded Lee it was a dumb move. If you know baseball the 3 kids they got in the trade were not even the Mariners top prospects. Why didn't he wait til the trade deadline to see how things played out? It has been one bad move after another and he gets paid for this!!! Yeah trades are hard to make that's why when you make them you should know what your doing! You sacrifice your farm systems top prospects to get 2 of the best pitchers in baseball then you trade one away without at least giving it a chance to pay you back. And I thought Ed Wade left town..... jmb53

Wait a minute! I see that bus headed to Allentown. There's Kendrick,Dobbs,Baez,Blanton,Madson,Werth,Cholly,Dubee, and some driver named Rube. Lopes is the interim manager, L.A. steps down from the booth and becomes pitching coach. Jim Eisenreich happliy accepts the job as new Phillies hitting coach. Hey, it's a dream shakeup! Seeing Red
I shudder to think what Ruby is going to do next - don't look, cover your eyes, it might be worthy of a Ron Zombie feature film:-) As bad as KK was, when Moyers pitches, I can't look and when JB pitches I need a drink. Figure that either KK, JM or JB are capable of imploding and giving up 6-8 runs in one inning at any time while Cholly watches like he has bad case of dementia. Between those three, you expect at any second to hear "long towering drive..". Those guys serve up more homerun pitches than a stadium serves salmonella saturated hotdogs. Its frightening. Ruben, you dug this hole creating the Phils pitching debacle, now you have to dig them out. Good luck. daystrum- Good move ...lets make some more thomdee
- Listen Philly Phans...start selling your tickets NOW while U can! thomdee
- Unless it is indeed a harbinger of something else to come, this move is nearly meaningless. One marginal pitcher comes up, another marginal pitcher goes down. Yawn.

- KK was thrown under the BUS! At the very least he shud be in the pen, unless he does have a problem relating to his poor velosity. He has pitched over 100 innings maybe something there!! larryv
Kendrick was inconsistent like Moyer. You do not know what you are going to get from start to start. This is the second half of the season and Moyer is usually less effective than early in the season. It may be Pedro time again. If there is a trade, it will interesting to see who is brought in. It better not be Milwood or another flunkey like Lilly. jpelle36
Offer Ibanez, Moyer, and if necessary, Werth or Victorino plus a few useless bullpen hacks to get back Kyle Drabeck from Toronto's Manchester Fisher Cats. The Jays are a bit finicky and unpredictable. The Phils would have Drabeck, then bring up Brown and Mayberry. Talk about change - whats wrong with a Brown, Victorino and Mayberry outfield or it could be Brown, Werth, Mayberry etc. Two new bats in the outfield, both power hitters, plus Drabeck as the third guy after Hamels in the rotation and pray that Happ can get back to form. Plausible? Why not, what do the Phillies have to lose at this point, basically nothing! The rotation would be Halliday, Hamels, Drabeck and Happ with JB used as scrap or long relief. Ruben has to think out of the box and not inside his keister. Getting back KD would be the tiniest redemption for the Lee disaster but better than nothing. My two in half cents. daystrum
Having said that, the bullpen is still travesty. Oh well. daystrum
bleed green forever- thank you, it saved me from having to type that famar
Happ..Kendrick..Blanton..Moyer...does it really matter? It may be best to just wait out the year and bite the bullet and sign Cliff Lee. Then, there will be two stars, one near star, and maybe Happ can find his stuff leaving Moyer as number 5. psuwelsh
Cardinals red hot, Phillies ice cold, Moyers on the mound - do you really want to WATCH this? Now that is masochism in its coldest form:-) daystrum
hahahaha exposed: they were not trying to restructure moron, they were adding onto the contract, wikipedia says his birthday is august 30 and has him listed at 31 right now! so he will be 32 next month. his NEW contract would have taken effect next year at the start of the 2010-2011 season, he wanted a six year deal, so in the last year of his contract he would be 37-38. so please what am i making up idiot.. keep trying to prove me wrong and showing how completely unkowledgable you are!!! you couldnt hold my jock tool!!!! bleed green forever
The Phillies aren't the only ones with pitching problems. EVERY team has pitching problems at some time during the season. The teams that has the FEWEST pitching problems are the ones that win the most. As for making a deal, FOR WHAT? There is nothing of quality out there, Just retreads and guys other teams have given up. The bad pitching bug has hit the Phillies this year. They managed to avoid it the last 3 years. Looks like it's their turn again. Grapost
Hey Prudential2 - the Phillies have the money to compete with the Yankees and Red Sox. If the Phillies didn't have the money then why would Ryan Howard be signed to an extension worth about $ 25M per year before his current contract was even due to expire? HighPlainsDrifter
It's hard to believe Kendrick had/has big ego problems. If anything, he looks lost and scared on the mound. The homerun balls he threw were some of the worst pitches I've seen. To be fair, Blanton is really the one who deserves to be demoted, but looking at the contracts, it is a no-brainer to ship KK, especially after last night. MrPhillie
AMARO is a hypocrite like montgomery....going after oswalt who makes more money than lee, then why in the world would you trade lee???? common now, to replenish your farm system with garbage from seattle??? GARBAGE!!!! mightyonk- Begin the process of retooling the roster for 2011 as this year is over. Sell, sell, sell. Bring up the kid from AAA and let him get his feet wet with no pressure on him. Where is Gillick, the baseball genius? He was the true architect of 2008 championship team. Rube is in way over his head.
Frankly, no because he has pitched better than some of the starters who are being kept because of their contracts. I understand the rules so he is the logical loser in this situation. Like McCarther, he will return. Slower
Send Milt Thompson and Chris Wheeler along with him. They stink. Sophilly
