Kendrick optioned to triple-A
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
ST. LOUIS -- It begins.
Eleven days before the trading deadline, the Phillies have made their first roster move. Righthander Kyle Kendrick was optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley after allowing seven runs in five innings in Monday's loss to the Cardinals.
Replacing Kendrick on the roster is righthander Andrew Carpenter, who was recalled. It's unknown if Carpenter will take Kendrick's next turn in the rotation, which is scheduled for Saturday against Colorado at Citizens Bank Park.
Kendrick was 5-4 with a 4.82 ERA in 20 games for the Phillies. He showed flashes of quality pitching, especially in May when he was 3-1 with a 3.13 ERA. He had a horrid first month but had a 4.04 ERA in 84 2/3 innings since.
In fact, since May 1, Kendrick has arguably been the Phillies' third-best starter. Consider:
Jamie Moyer: 7-7, 4.78 ERA, 86 2/3 IP, 72 H, 15 HR
Joe Blanton: 3-5, 6.21 ERA, 87 IP, 108 H, 16 HR
Kendrick: 5-3, 4.04 ERA, 84 2/3 IP, 84 H, 12 HR
Carpenter, 25, was 7-6 with a 3.41 ERA for Lehigh Valley. He began the season on the Phillies roster but did not appear in any games. It would be surprising if Carpenter simply replaces Kendrick in the rotation. Another move is likely coming, whether it's a trade or promotion.
Not to say Carpenter hasn't pitched well for the IronPigs. If we take the same time measurement, Carpenter has a 3.11 ERA in 84 innings at triple-A since May 1.
Another possibility to join the rotation is lefthander J.A. Happ. Happ will make another start at triple A on Tuesday night. Happ has a 5.59 ERA in 19 1/3 triple-A innings in 2010.
More to come...
Will it ever occur to Charlie that he can take a pitcher out before four or five runs have been scored? JayW
it has to be happ coming back...he replaces kendrick and takes his spot in the rotation - in the meantime you have another arm in the bullpen...Carpenter? I guess...this is not a sake'em-up kinda move anyway...that would be bring up brown and have him platoon with Ibanez and Werth potentially - i dont care that he has not played left field....if Greg Luzinski and Pete Incaviglia can play left field then an athletic 21 yr old studd can.... roddieb
iron giant - that would be true if we had an eagles squad worth cheering about. templeowl08
f.harry: sorry didnt know i was in english class, YOU'RE A MORON!!! where in my statement did i say anything about his performance last night? in fact, when did i say anything bad about KK, I just simple pointed out to one of YOU'RE fellow IDIOTS that he had nothing to do with the Lee trade... Learn how to read and thanks for coming out... bleed green forever
Phiggles fan, Happ's ERA this season and your baseball knowledge are the same. Kendrick is a number five starter for...the Pittsburgh Pirates. It is still difficult to get past the Lee trade. Halladay, Lee and Hamels 1-2-3. Can you imagine? They would not have had to score many runs. You get very few opportunities to have starting pitching like this and Amaro either had his hands tied or thought he was smarter than everyone else. This team would have been much better and very difficult to deal with in the post season. syddan26

Moyer vs Carpenter (the one from St. Louis) Another loss tonight boys and girls! rjernee- I know Kendrick has been shaky at times, but So has Blanton and Moyer. They however are making to much money to be sent down. Unless the Phils are planning another move behind this, it seems like things are coming apart at the seems for Amaro and Company.

KK is going to be part of some kind of trade package. Book it. Something else is brewing.... Nigel#1
Glad to see the bandwagon losing weight, though I wish the team was doing better. I was pulling for KK, but he is a #5 at best; at least the second coming of Brandon Duckworth isn't in the cards at the moment. Honestly, I actually prefer it when only true fans follow the team. Winning does have it's downside... Timmy
If they are going to send Kendrick down to Lehigh Valley, when are they going to send Blanton, Lidge, Moyer, Madsen and Baez down, too? I think someone is trying to make Kendrick the fall guy for pretty bad mediocre pitching by some of our so called "better" pitchers. Why you're at it, Francisco, Dobbs and Werth could use a little time there, too. As I have said before, Ruben needs to be getting rid of "bad" contracts before he needs to be acquiring new players. All of the names above, and Ibanez, should be trade bait even if it is only a salary dump. There is a time to buy and a time to sell. It is the time to sell to shake-up this team. RunningTheBases
.685 ball? We are 3 games out of the wild card.... Also, how many more fastballs RIGHT down the middle of the plate is Werth going to look at? What happened to "Look fastball and adjust to everything else" elfman
