People are really counting on Kyle Kendrick this year.

Quite a change, huh?

Think back to last June. A relative unknown, the Phillies promote Kendrick from double-A Reading to replace Freddy Garcia (aka The $10 Million Bust) in the Phillies' rotation. Kendrick hadn't even been invited to big-league spring training a few months earlier, so the Phillies were just hoping Kendrick could hold the fort until maybe something better came along.

But not only does Kendrick replace Garcia, he goes 10-4 with a 3.87 ERA in 20 starts.

No Kendrick.

No playoffs.

Kendrick enters his first big-league camp -- not many pitchers make 20 starts and win 10 games before they enter their first big-league camp -- lined up as the team's No. 3 starter with Brett Myers starting Opening day and Cole Hamels following him. Naturally, people want to see if Kendrick is the Real Deal (apologies to J.D. "The Real Deal" Durbin.) He's confident he can prove to people 2007 wasn't a fluke. Charlie Manuel and Rich Dubee think Kendrick can do just that. They need it. Because like I explained in today's Inquirer, this rotation is filled with question marks. If Kendrick can replicate last season's success, it's one less thing Manuel and Dubee (and the front office) will have to worry about.

*

Two of the Phillies' top prospects -- Joe Savery and Josh Outman -- got knocked around in yesterday's 11-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

*

Ryan Howard absolutely crushed a home run to right field yesterday. The ball cleared the ballpark.

It's probably still going.

*

The Phillies head to Bradenton today to play the Pirates. Durbin is starting the "A" game. Brett Myers and J.C. Romero are pitching in the "B" game.

I can see Kendrick winning 17/18 games, but there's always the sophomore jinx he'll have to deal with, do the batters know him now? will he have to come up with another pitch? we'll know by the end of April won't we!

This is the new Phillies zone. They've not published most of my postings. I believe they have achieved civility.

Nick from the NE how true---It's really sad when ppl can't post their points of view. There was no profanity or threats om the zo' zone. You would think the inquirer has ownership in the Phillies, maybe they are intertwined somehow. Anyway I know this won't get posted. Zo' I your such a Howard hater.(Q&A with Schmidt) Schmidt couldn't hold Ryan's jock strap. If Howard had Schmidt prtoecting him he's be 65-70 HR guy!

The Phillies have a history of rookie pitchers dazzling everybody only to then disappoint by never duplicating that early success. Marty Bystrom and Brandon Duckworth, among others, come to mind. I hope Kendrick is different, but it's difficult to count on that. And, unfortunately, the Phillies do have to count on that.

Unfortunately, the site has lost a little for me since the move. I used to check it several times a day, but i don't like the new look. The posts aren't as lively. On the ZoZone there was actually good debate based on the topics Zo posted. Now, not so much. I don't mind things changing, but this one was not for the better. I'll still read Todd's articles but won't be around on the blog as much.

Looks like the Zo' zone tried to edit and erradicate the truth form it's site, hence the phillies zone. The response to this new and sterile environment has been undewhelming. Lively back and forth real time banter always beats one sided cheerleading. I hope the suits learn a lesson.

Just noticed that Todd didn't even have a link to the blog at the end of his article (which he usually does).

It's really kind of sad. I think I'm going to start waxing prophetically(no that is not a rap music term, more of a legal term) with the Cheeseman. He had no choice on the format given to him. Zo' could've fought a better fight. Once again this is really sad. I'll be over there talking about my boy Hamels at somepoint today....

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
