Kendrick angry after 5-inning start
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- In the end, Charlie Manuel played a hunch and it did not work right. The Phillies manager follows his gut when making in-game decisions and on this night, it told him Kyle Kendrick was done after five innings.
It's hard to jump on that decision -- only when permitted the advantage of second-guessing. Kendrick was passable for six innings in his last start against Toronto and Manuel allowed a longer leash. He pitched the seventh and allowed two more runs.
Maybe that's what stuck in Manuel's mind Wednesday. Kendrick had thrown 81 pitches and allowed three runs (one earned) against Florida. He was the first to admit a lack of dominance. "It wasn't pretty," he said.
Kendrick added: "But I still had zeroes."
Manuel had a plan and that was for David Herndon to pitch the middle innings. When Herndon allowed three of five batters he faced to reach base, it was clear the strategy backfired. Enter Andrew Carpenter, a pitcher who was designated for assignment less than week into spring training and now pitching the seventh inning of a one-run game in July.
Manuel said after the game that he is staying away from using Michael Stutes for more than one inning. He could have gotten four outs, maybe, but that wouldn't help in the sixth and beginning of the seventh.
Afterward, Kendrick was peeved. He was asked if he could have lasted longer.
"Yeah," he said. He paused for a few seconds. "Yeah. I threw 80 pitches."
Standing in front of his locker, he held back what he really wanted to say.
"It's not my decision," Kendrick said. "Was I happy? No."
Then, when asked another question about the quick hook, Kendrick posed two of his own.
"What did he say? Did you ask him?"
"He" would be Manuel, who did not offer much.
"I took him out didn't I?" Manuel said brusquely.
Of course, the bullpen was not all to blame. Two Domonic Brown miscues cost three runs. The Phillies offense, which battered Anibal Sanchez, went quiet in the middle innings against a taxed Florida bullpen.
But Kendrick boarded the team's charter plane with a sour taste in his mouth, just as many Phillies fans did as they went to sleep.

I am glad Kendrick is peeved. As soon as I saw Herndon was in the game, I did a double take at the score. He should never be in a game they are winning. Why not Baez there instead? I know he gave up the game winner, but I would rather have him pitching than Herndon. Let Kendrick pitch more...it is better than the other options you have at that point. Hammer859
KK, if you had some anger on the mound, instead of pitching like a mangina, maybe Charlie would stick with you. You so appropriately put I only gave up 1 ER. You also walked the leadoff guy and gave up a single to the pitcher to help that cause. You sure do not seem like a fit on this team, this team is We not I. Bigkahuna3131- Kendrick wasn't the problem fault. He should have been left in the game. I or We, lets blame Charlie for poor managing and Brown for the errors. You don't go out and pull a guy that has thrown 81 pitches and only given up 1 run. He didn't give up 2 runs, Brown did with the errors. Pull him from the game (he has 4 errors in just 60 total chances) because he is the reason Charlie was out to yank Kendrick. Kumaryu
the simple question is - why is david herndon still on the phillies? philliestew- Herndon might have good stuff by he doesn't know how to pitch, aside from dom brown's miscues, Herndon lost us the game jamarder
Bad decision. He wasn't dominating but he wasn't hit around like a rag doll either. With a young and inexperienced bullpen, you can't take the pitcher out after 5 innings, especially when he put zeroes in the 4th and 5th. So if he was thinking about Kendrick's last outing, he should have look at Herndon's and Carpenter's last relief appearances. Both pitched 2 innings against Boston. Herndon allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and Carpenter 2 runs (HRs) on 4 hits. As for Brown, every time the ball is hit his way it looks like an adventure even when he makes the plays. He has a weird style (or non-style) like if he was just learning the game. EL Zorro

SHUT THE F! UP KENDRICK. YOU'RE LUCKY TO BE ON THIS TEAM! The dude give up 2 baserunners per inning, and essentially every out he gets, aside from an occassional ground ball, is on the warning track. Same goes for Herndon, both belong somewhere/anywhere but here.
Good to see offense back on track though. A lot of hard hit balls lately, and its great to see Rollins, Utley, and Howard swinging the bat well. The series this weekend is going to be incredible, 3 good pitching matchups... CosmoK
Where are the scouts that said Brown was ready for prime time? He even cost the Phillies another run by making a mistake of missing the bag because he was looking at the play instead of the 3B coach. This kid needs more seasoning than a Thanksgiving turkey. I guess I was wrong after all, ha? Where are my detractors? EL Zorro- Brown is a rookie trying to break into a starting lineup on a team with the best record in baseball.Didn't run out the ball to second a couple weeks ago, loafed after the ball that got away from him last night. What do you think he'll be like if he ever does make it? Major league DIVA in waiting. It appeared he got a piece of second on the triple but barely. Shouldn't have been a close call.
drenner
I'm sorry Kendrick but you have no right to be angry. In fact, you should be grateful that you still have a chance to start in the MLB. iladelph
I agree with Kendrick. He should have stayed in there. Charlie needs to stop saying the starters needed to go further into the games. He's the one who takes them out. Kendall had thrown 80 pitches and given up 1 earned run. Nice loss last night. Way to Charlie. rolenfan
Comment removed.- Completely agree with you there. These rule 5ers should not be taking up roster spots. Herndon has not be able to pitch since last years spring training and do the Phillies really think Michael Martinez has a future with this squad? I mean come on, a pinch runner at best and I would much rather have Mayberry as an option in his spot. Herndon + Baez need cut immediately. How they both have jobs gives me hope that my 5 year old daughter could get a shot pitching out of the Pen for the Phils.
jollyrancherk3
What was Rollins still doing in the game after he hit the ball down the first base line and stood at home plate and watched it and was out. Nice hustle. Nice team play. rolenfan- it hit the line. im with rolenfan. Rollins made no effort..again. Glad its his last year on this team.
tdoc - Ummm....go back and watch the play again - the ball was FAIR! And Rollins never got out of the box....way to hustle, J-Roll. By the way....looks like you're the dufus, mbell1230.

Kendrick is Kevin Gross reincarnated... kjuggs77
If Kendrick wants to be angry, he should be angry at himself. Worley comes up and is throwing zeros all over the place. Three years later Kendrick is still getting lit up in the majors. I wish Myers was right when he played the prank on him that he was traded to Japan. Also, Domonic Brown is the worst looking outfielder in the major leagues. Where are the minor league coaches that should be teaching him how to play the outfield? He takes bad routes to the ball and looks very uncoordinated when he plays the ball. I would put him in the minors for 10 days and give him a wake up call. He has too much prima donna in him already. Utley and Howard need to straighten that out. In two years we'll be comparing him to Wes Chamberlain and not Darryl Strawberry if he doesn't get straightened out. alihajishank- I see the uncoordinated plays sometimes, but I don't see the prima donna stuff...
PhilliefaninAZ
Whose KK to say anything? Granted the defense didn't help him and I'd rather have KK over Herndon (gulp) but seriously, KK's a scrub AAAA pitcher making $2M when he probably should be s career AAA guy or playing for some last place team like Nationals. Glad to see he can be a tough guy after the game to the media, but continues to wet the bed when he pitches. If you don't like it here or how you're used, go to Washington or something. This is a WS team and you're not an important piece of the puzzle. Go get Doc another ice bag and shut it. DennyP
i love these STFU posts to KK. If he said, "Well yeah, i'm glad Cholly took me out" all you morons will rail against him saying he has no heart. I wondered why Cholly took him out after 5. He should have let him start the 6th and then bring Herndon or whoever in if he gets hit around. palmyra21
The more I see of Brown, the more I question his readiness to be a major leaguer, let alone a starter. He is still VERY raw, and defensively, he is lacking in the most fundamental of fundamentals. At this point, I don't understand how he has has been labeled a "can't miss prospect" fro the last three years. He's young, and he MIGHT get there, but he has a LONG way to go... ksam
The team wins despite Cholly. When managerial decisions are not tough and they play well, they can overcome his incompetence. When the game relies on smart managerial decisions the Phillies are in trouble. Kendrick is not great, but the Marlins aren't the Blue Jays. He deserved to pitch at least another inning. He's a better option than the othe early bullpen dreck. This L is on Cholly. homerjay99- I agree with this completely. Cholly is supposedly a hitting coach, too, right, even though his lifetime average is .189 or something?
coloradoeagle - Well said and totally agree. Chuck's success is a product of his very good players making him look like he has a clue. When it invloves heat of the moment game decisions, they don't get much worse. Chuck follows a similar coaching style as Andy Reid. How Herndon or Baez are even options is astounding for a team trying to win a championship. And obviously Chuck's bench coaches just sit there and give him zero input for them to allow Chuck to do what he does.
jollyrancherk3
Not a big KK fan, but I was stunned when he didn't come out to start the 6th. All this talk about pitch count is pure B.S.! He's plenty stretched out. Let him in there, Charlie! How can the kid prove himself, if he's getting yanked after 5 innings with the Phils leading? I think Cholly made a mistake there, especially bringing in Herndon who promptly surrenderd 2 runs. Loose play in the field and the bats falling asleep (again) after the fightin's got the lead were the main factors in the Phils dropping what should have been another win. doug1834
Go easy on Dom Brown. He is clearly very raw, and needs some seasoning, particularly in the outfield. but he clearly has talent, even as a defensive outfielder. he has tremendous speed, i mean he is as fast as anyone they have on the club, granted its not doing much good at the moment with the bad routes, etc. and he has a rocket for an arm, granted he throws it in the wrong direction 30% of the time. But he can hit, and that's why he's here, and the alternative (ben francisco) is far worse in the outfield. cut the kid some slack, focus the wrath on veteran stiffs like kyle kendrick, baez, etc. CosmoK- You have to stick with Brown. The concern with him is not his defense it is if he can play a large part on the offensive side. Castro has had 43 errors in a year and a half but his offense is so good that they will take their lumps with his defense. We need to see how good Brown really is offensively. What I see already that is his pitch selection is already better then most of our team, has very good power and a great arm. Not all guys come up here raring and ready to go.PATIENCE IS NEEDED..He has no more to learn in AAA imo.
pattymac3
KK is not the greatest and has no right to complain....except when he loses a decision because Herndon and Baez (two minor leaguers) are assigned to hold the game for him. Then yes, he has a right to complain. Relocator

KENDRICK, HERNDON, CARPENTER, BROWN, MARTINEZ, FRANCISCO, BAEZ ALL STINK AND STILL THE PHILS HAVE BEST RECORD IN MAJORS---- GO FIGURE! AND GET RID OF SOME OF THISGARBAGE! OH YEAH, IBANEZ TOO.
DONDEN31
Brown has 4 errors in 38 games and some blunders on the bases and offensively he needs a lot of work. He should not be learning on the job at this level. That's what the minors are for. But Charlie wants him here because he thinks he can fix him, himself a bad ballplayer. Go figure. I take my chances with Sandberg at Lehigh Valley. EL Zorro
Right now you say that there are 4 mop up relievers in the pen(Baez,Carpenter,Herndon, and Mathieson). Uncle Cholly, when he has to use some strategy, comes up small again. Out of the 4 mop ups,why not go with Baez to follow Kendrick? Maybe you have a 6-4 game, handing the ball to Stutes in the eighth. Who knows? Why was there nobody warming up in the seventh when Carpenter ran into trouble? Cholly hung Lee out to dry versus The Blue Jays. He was coming off of 3 complete games and nobody was warming up to start the eighth inning. Lee should have pulled after Thame's solo shot tied the game. To me,Manuel's strategy cost them these two games this week. Parade or not when the smoke clears,I hope Ryne Sandberg is the manager of this team next year. I've seen enough of Manuel and J Roll hustling and playing hard whenever he feels up to it. This team is very lucky to have the starting pitching that it does. It seems to overcome these other issues. Seeing Red
Brown had a horible night and HE cost the teama W.
The 2 base error allowed 1 againt. Missing 2nd base and getting called out only to see the next batter hit a homer cost us another..
Game over...
And we could have lived without the dramatic head first slide into 3rd when my grandmother could have gotten there standing up.
You missed the bag at 2nd and the 3rd base coaches signal to go in standing up. If you jammed your finger or broke your wrist you'd be even more useless right now. Sit him down Charlie and teach him a lesson.
dedhed
Kendrick is angry? He should be. With himself. Somehow he's held on all these years with very mediocre skills. Every year the Phillies have to keep him on the roster to "eat up innings" due to injuries. Unfortunately, we don't have any other options right now. Stop pouting, KK, you're lucky to have a job. farside37
The most important thing a pitcher needs to do when pitching with a comfy lead is not to walk hitters. Kendrick's control was awful last night..He constantly put on the leadoff hitter and fell behind to almost every hitter. From Charlie Manuel to the fans watching the game, everyone had to be frustrated with the way Kendrick was looking out there. Kendrick just displays no confidence also.. When you look at his body language out there its not positive.. He looks like the dog that just had an accident on the carpet and knows he did wrong. I'd get rid of him in a country second for whatever they can get.. He's been in the majors for 4 years now and still has not developed a breaking pitch worth using. Brutal is the word.. bradco

HOMERJAY99 you are exactly right when you said: "The team wins despite Cholly. When managerial decisions are not tough and they play well, they can overcome his incompetence. When the game relies on smart managerial decisions the Phillies are in trouble."
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> And let me add this... If I read or hear about how great and kowledgeable a hitting GURU Manuel is 1 more time, I'll throw up. The guy was putrid when he played here and only mildly successful in Japan. If he's so good, why has the team been in a year long hitting slump? Simply put, Manuel is one of the worse managers in Phillies history. Get off the kool-aide people and actually look at his decisions. dedhed
Kendrick pitched horrible last night...he should be thanking the marlins for being bad enough not to score double digits. Thankfully the fish remained cooled off last night. MFPhils
PhillyMike are you serious? Victorino wasn't a great fielder? Since he debuted in 2003 with San Diego to 2006 with the Phillies he didn't make an error in a total of 244 games (including 122 games in 2006). In 2007 he committed only 3 errors in 117 games. In those 2 sesons he had double figures in assist, 11 and 10 respectively. In 5 seasons playing the OF in the minors he had a fielding percentage of .991 in CF and a perfect 1.000 in two seasons playing RF. EL Zorro
I never condone a player airing his feelings to the press. Go to the manager and tell him that you're peeved. All pitchers want the ball. And all writers want a gossip column. retzlaff
Saw Savery have a clean outing out of the pen last week in Reading and he had another clean outing last night in Bowie. He looks more ready out of the pen than that collection of Herndon, Mathieson, Perez, Baez or Carpenter do! Dull
KK doesnt have the cred to question anyone. Pipe down Cuz.
Rube go get Mike Adams from SD and Michael Bourn(in lieu of Raul.236) I'll see early November on Broad treet. argonne- Baez Herndon Brown Mayberry Carpenter kendrick get rid of all of them at end of year Kevinmac
- You take your starter out when he is in trouble. He makes it through an inning, he gets to go back out with a lead. 1 or 2 guys get on and then you get the hook. 1 out of 162. No big deal. When he wakes up he'll calm down. Non-issue.
mbell1230-----excuse me dufus he was out!!!!!! rolenfan
not that he played well, but it looked like d.brown's left heel did touch second base. snakeplissken
Brown didn't miss second base, I don't care what they say. He hit it. cloudkitt
Where's Calvin Maduro when we need him? EL Zorro
KK is lucky to be pitching on this team. Herndon and Martinez need to go! A right handed bat is a necessity! Baez is still on the team!! Gus L.
Charlie Manuel cost the Phillies another game. He seems to cost the Phillies a game in every series. There was no reason to take Kendrick out after 81 pitches. Kendrick gave up one hit and no runs in the fourth and one hit and no runs in the fifth. The pitchers Charlie Manuel brought in, David Herndon and Andrew Carpenter, had been hammered by the Red Sox for 5 runs in their last appearance. Guess what? They were hammered again. The Phillies players must have a sour taste in their mouths, just like the Phillies fans. What was Charlie Manuel thinking when he took Kendrick out after 81 pitches? I guess we won't know because Charlie Manuel wouldn't answer questions. Freedom Fries
herndon and carpenter, the dynamic duo of duds section707
the first thing, manuel is the manager,i am sure he talked tp the pitching coach before he pulled kendrick. kendrick does not belong on this team. either does baez and herndon. brown needs to keep his head in the game and not worry about his batting average. mayberry needs more playing time on this team. i still see howard swinging at pitches in the dirt, how long has he been in the majors. ra is very quiet, i believe a move is coming. rfklak
I'm not a fan of Kendrick. He's a borderline major league pitcher at best, but Herndon and Baez clearly can't get it done. Schwimmer made the AAA all star game with a 1 something ERA. How come he's not getting a shot!? seamhead50
Every time Herndon gets in a game, he gives up runs. How this guy still has a job is beyond me. ermatt
Kendrick should be angry and I'm glad he's showing it. Such a display of emotion shows a player really cares about what he is doing and takes pride in his work. A few years ago, the entire Phillie organization and news media participated in a practical joke on Kendrick. The young pitcher was told he was being traded to a team in Japan. The next day, he appeared on national television with Brett Myers as the brunt of an unnecessary joke that took his career into a downspin. No one will ever convince me that his meteoric rise from obscurity in Reading to the limelight in Philly wasn't stopped dead in its tracks by a practical joke that caused Kendrick public humiliation. I'm glad to see Kendrick pitching fairly well again this year and glad to see that what he is doing on the mound matters to him. I'll always wonder where he would be at now if it weren't for one stupid prank that made a promising young pitcher the laughing stock of baseball fans. onthebucks
So that's 3 pitchers complaining the last two months or so about the way they have been handled by the dynamic duo of Manuel/Dubee: Oswalt, Worley and KK. Another thing, I wonder what Dubee was saying to rookie Michael Stutes after he pitched that 8th inning. He looked very serious. As a matter of fact, Stutes wasn't even looking at him. He had a serious look himself. What could he possibly say to the rookie after a shut down inning? Maybe the throwing error on the pick up throw that allow pinch runner Hayes to advance to 3B? I hope he said nice way to bounce back by inducing Cameron to pop up to Howard and striking out Bonifacio to end the threat. EL Zorro
The Pen let KK down. Chase had two hitters on base in the 9th. Nada. Yep, errors too hurt. But, the Pen allowed the runs and the team should have had this sweep. The Bravos are now close. The 3 last night should not be with the team for the 2nd half and Rube should know this. And he is looking for an IF?????? Koons
Pattymac, you can't compare INF and OF while discussing defense. The SS, in this case Sterling Castro, has way more chances than a RF. And for the total of errors, Jimmy Rollins avg. more than 20 errors a game in the minors, including 26 in one season. Castro, at age 20, made 27 last year, but that is expected for a young infielder. Robbie Alomar, to me the greatest defensive 2b of all time, if not the best overall, had 16 and 28 errors his 1st two seasons. But Alomar and Castro, both starting in the bigs at the very young age of 20, proved to be ready for the big show. Sterling hit .300 last year and is hitting .307 this year. Alomar hit .295 his second season with 42 SB after hitting .266 his rookie season with 6 triples, 9 HR and 24 SB, not bad for a second baseman back in '88. Two year later he made his first of many AS appearances in a row. At age 23, Brown is not even close to this two guys, or J-Roll for that matter, in terms of readiness, although the kid has athleticsm, but so did Jeff Stone. EL Zorro

Count me among the confused. With an off day Thursday and a big weekend series coming...it made more sense to let KK go 7 if at all possible...KK was right to be upset. The move defied all logic. Grazman- i don't think kk is very good pitcher . he is allowed to be mad in this case since he wasn't pitching badly and had plenty of pitches left. the bigger issue for me is brown and his clumsiness. he slid and missed home plate the other day. possibly missed 2nd base yesterday. and missed a ground ball yesterday also. does he look like a polished player? I'm not too sure. go phillies.
- Kendrick and Herdon should both count their lucky stars to be collecting major league paychecks. Boru

Wait, when did Oswalt complain about the way he was handled? They basically let him go home for a week without any problem. He hurt his back during this time off, then came back and tried to pitch through it, always being the first one to say if he can pitch to try to help the team, he would do so. Stop trying to light fires that aren't there Zorro. Brown is 23 years old he is raw he's not going to be Carl Crawford overnight. You say you can't compare INF and OF while discussing defense, but you do so comparing offense? That makes no sense. Brown will be a solid major league outfielder. Stop trying to run him out of town. I never liked Kyle Kendrick and I never will. 2 million dollars this guy steals from the team. Incredible seaonasdad
Herndon and Baez are on the team because Madson, Contreras and (maybe) Lidge are not. Stutes, as usual, pitched great. And Charlie needs to keep Bastardo for save situations right now. Frankly, I don't fault Manuel at all. Kendrick was very hittable again and we were all over Manuel for leaving KK in an extra inning during his last start. Boiled down, our bullpen is weakened by injuries and KK is our worst starter. It adds up to a disappointing loss in a game where we hit pretty well and Mayberry was served some nice fastballs. eman
can anyone explain to me why herndon is still on this roster? raynesrock
When are they gonna get rid of these rule 5 GEMS such as herndon and martinez. Herndon has a sinker that does not sink and Martinez is hitting .175, I can hit that. Not every 5 can be a Werth or Victorino so LET THEM GO Trot
Whenever I see Baez,Carpenter,Herndon or Mathieson in the game, my first thought is bad things are going to happen. zeke128
This team will not win the East. Atlanta is too strong, pitching is the best in MLB, and with Minor go 6 deep with starters. Jurrjins and Hanson are unhittable, Beachy is dominant strikeout pitcher, Hudson, is ACE, and Lowe is fifth starter, not too shabby. Their bullpen is second to none. Atlanta will win the East with at least 105 games, yes they are that good, and will win the World Series this year. Note that I am a Phils fan amd hope that I am wrong with my assessment but with their pitching (5 deep, all equal to the Phils 3 starters), and their hitting just starting to heat up, they are currently on a roll that should last all year unless hit by injuries. But even if they are hit ny injuries, they have the depth to overcome them, not the likes of AAA players line Martinez and Valdez, and they don't likes of a Baez, Herndon, or Romero on their team. Just like Romero, if the Phils were to release Herndon and Baez, no team would take them on their 25 man roster. Sad statement of affairs for the Phils. By Sunday night, the Phils win be in 2nd place, never to see the light of first place again for years to come, until this team is re-tooled. jeff007
It is extremely painful to watch Kendrick and Herndon pitch. They are very mediocre and un-deserving of pitching in Majors. In short, they are Minor league material, period. It is very unfortunate that Phillies lost both, Oswald and Blanton, to injuries. I sincerely hope that one of them will be back soon and in decent form (I know, who can guarantee that). Otherwise we can count on every 5th game being lost as a matter of fact. With Atlanta on our heals we just can't afford it. We need to bring another starter from AAA, or a big bet in the trade to outscore our opponents. hollandpa
KK has no beef. He is a AAA pitcher at best. His success has come only when the Phils score big for him. He has always been less than well conditioned as well. If Cholly figures he's gassed after 5 [and I thought he was after 4], then Cholly made the right call. If was a very hot and humid night there. Unfortunately, Herndon, and Baez are two failed experiments that ought to be relegated to the Iron Pigs. Both are BP Pitchers. Carpenter was stale. Stutes did his usual outstanding job. Need to see Carpenter and Mathieson more often and see the backs of Herndon, Baez, Kendrick and Blanton, the latter two religiously out of shape. Bring up the kids, a la 1980! ngfs66
jeff -- If you think the Braves will take 105 games this year, I suggest you not place bets in Las Vegas. You'll be walking home from there because you know from nothing. I grant your comment on retooling since when it comes to 'tools', your experience has us all beat. Claudio Vernight
seassonsdad, before the tornado thing, Charlie put a pinch hitter for Oswalt early in one game and he told the press that he wasn't happy and he had no idea why he was taken out of the game and to ask Charlie. As for Brown, the kid has way to go before he becomes a good player, let alone a star. He has so many holes in his game, that's not even funny. He has talent, obviously, but that is not enough to survive in the majors. If you don't know that, you need to learn a lot about the game. EL Zorro
Ya know what's really exciting, it's that there aren't enough duds in the bullpen already, but Brad Lidge is almost ready to return...........YEAAAAAAAAAAAH. Oh brother :( phillyboobird
Tough L. Kendrick should keep quiet though. Cy Young he ain't. Poppys
I'll say it again.............Mayberry should be playing everyday as the #2 OF behind Vic. Brown is way over-rated and may be a nice player but his mistakes and lack of hustle are obvious. Problem with the Phils is Charlie sacrificed this game and many others and the Braves will continue to win. Yes they are on pace for a 100 win season- some mounting injury problems are apparent. Northcountry- You're right about Mayberry; he's better defensively than every other outfielder except Shane, he covers more ground than anyone, and he can play all 3 outfield positions plus 1st base (if you want a laugh). And his numbers up here are slightly better than Brown's. I can't figure out why Brown is such a hot prospect, and Mayberry isn't. Yes, Mayberry has trouble with righthanders, but he has looked decent when given a chance (his first hr last night was off of a RH pitcher, which is encouraging). mjc1

Kendrick should shut up and thank God he's on this team. Idiot. Bob1
And can ANYONE tell us all why Cholly insists on pitching Herndon or Baez? Have they not proven that they cannot hold a lead? Have they not shown that for either (or both) of them to enter a game, it is like yelling to the other dugout "OK guys- here's your chance! Score as many runds as you can"! JosephL
KK back to long relief; Outright Baez; send Herndon back to LV; give Schwimer a shot at the 5-spot; De Fratus can't be worse than Carpenter and Mathieson; Ibanez needs to retire; blah , blah , blah.... Seegs

package Kendrick, Fat Joe and some prospects for Justin Upton. See how KK likes pitching every 5 days in AZ. cheesesteak17
Phillies offense is too complacent after they score. Must think the other team won't try and crawl back in the game. Until the Phillies batters decide to turn it on, this team will scratch out wins and some tough losses. Send D-Brown back up here to Iron Pigs country and get rid of Matinez and Ibanez, Raul is cooked. I've seen T-baller's with faster bat speed, he can't handle anything that's on the outside or inside! Missed first half of game but did see Herndon give up runs. Send him out as well. RAJ better some help quick, because after this weekend series we could be in a flat-foot tie for 1st. mad2002mad
Why are so many assuming that Mayberry hits that HR if Brown's on 3rd? There'd be a different approach, at the plate and at the mound. jabs69
Brown has all the signs of an underachiever. Not smart. Not fundamental. Not alert. I don't like what I see and his loafing on that triple is just mind boggling. Those kind of things are tough to change. You would expect a young guy to be alert and hustling. He's playing dumb and lazy. Bobby Abreu anyone????? exdand
im just shocked that a team would lose a game when its long reliever is starting because the 4th and 5th starters are on the dl, and the manager has to use scrubs out of the pen because their 3 top righthanded relievers are on the DL as well....
why is everyone so upset about this?
suddenly all this praise for Mayberry because he has a good game..did he not also drop a ball that was in his glove? jim715
im also shocked that a young player like Brown would make mistakes..yes, lets send him down so someone else with less upside can play out there..
mathieson and carpenters stats were just as dominating in AAA as schwimmer and defratus'...so why would the two we havent seen be better? its just that AAA is full of has beens like brandon moss and josh barfield and dane sardhina... jim715
Comment removed.- Rather than being angry, Kendrick should be tickled pink that he is on the team and not traveling a bus in Triple A. Had he stayed in the game, he would have imploded, as usually happens. After his implosions, is he peeved? Nope, usually he just didn't have his "stuff." The kid is a second-rate pitcher at the very best and I can't wait for Blanton to return so Kendrick can return to the bullpen. Izzie
Too many ridiculous occurances last night to single on one but if you were to it'd be taking Kendrick out and puting Herndon in. That guy is a disaster. I don't care about Rule 5 the only rule I'd pay any attention is rule 1, get rid of him or if nothing else, stop pitching him. As bad as we were with less than 2 out men on 3rd Marlin ineptitude, we were about 15 feet from winning. I'd have bet my life Howards shot to center was gone and I've never since '08 had as much faith in a closer than Bastardo, he's awesome along with Stutes. Will be nice when the rare occasion comes that you can use Stutes and Bastardo in the 6th and 7th instead of Herndon. mad 2002 mad. Braves play today and could be 2.5 out with 3 in Philly this weekend. They could be alone in first. Hope Victorino can play. Perr
Kendrick had no command. He was missing the corners and had to throw the ball over the plate in hitter's counts. The only thing that kept the Marlins from scoring on him early was their aggressiveness. They got themselves out. He doesn't have good enough stuff to get by on if he can't locate his pitches. I was hoping Charlie would take him out after the 5th. One of the down sides of the Phillies great starting pitching is that middle relievers only get used in Kendrick's games. The other guys either finish or get them to the back end of the bullpen. Guys that don't pitch regularly like Herndon, Baez, Carpenter and Mathieson don't have any rhythm as would be expected. Hopefully, none of these guys will figure into the playoff games. Philliesguy
KK SUCKS!..Trade him to Japan or something! Robi_LA
Jeff is nothing more than a Braves troll. Their offense is as bad as the Phillies and don't even have injuries as an excuse. Rod72
KK has a right to be angry; and Dom Brown has a right to be ashamed of some of his play last night; bright spot - Big John... M60tanker
Good for KK. Get some backbone and get some grit ON the mound too. Charlie made a really "bad" move bringing in the gasoline known as Herdon/Baez. They simply cannot get the job done. Carpenter is not much better...should have left Kendrick in for at least the 6th (one earned run is not bad at all. Sloppy field play (gotta love Brown in right huh? and that Rollins throw was just as nice). In the end, Uncle Cholly messed up big time on this one and the "personnel" on the bump was just as bad. Glad to see Mayberry Jr. put up some crooked numbers to claim a spot as a right handed bat. drhoffman
He deserves to be mad, he's been the whipping boy for so long it doesn't surprise me... djw26
KK lacks the creds to pop off. NewMick314
Wait, Kyle Kendrick is angry? Well, boo-freakin-hoo. I'm angry, too. Angry that I still have to watch KK go out there and pitch just well enough to make us all think he has finally turned a corner, only to then blow up or allow the key run at the wrong time. Getting old in my book. Cole Hamels grew up. It's time for Kyle to do the same. bobby

I agree with some other posters that he has no right to be angry, and should be grateful that he is still on the roster. The guy is pretty much a guaranteed 5 runs every time he pitches. He could be replaced by pretty much ANY minor league pitcher. I wish we could get rid of him for a little something in return (and just replace him with the next scrub in the minors). Even a bag of balls would be better than nothing... Guy55555
Jeff007 Go back to Atlanta you horse's arse! The only way that the Braves make the playoffs is if they sneak in as the wildcard team.

KK has no right to complain. He has a history of getting worse as
the game goes on. However, bringing in Carpenter, Herndon and Baez i
blame on Cholly. These three guys are the world's worse. I don't
understand why Herndon and Baez are on this team. Doesn't make sense
to me. And why use them when we have a lead. Use these guys when the
Phils are getting creamed so they get a little exercise but not in a
game we are winning. associate
I agree with all who say KK is a marginal major league starter. He won't be starting once Oswalt and/or Blanton comes back now that Worley has shown that he is more than capable. Charlie has every right to pull him when he did--KK has been lit up many times when Charlie has left him in 1 inning too long. Phillyfan among the NYers
Yawn. Is any starting pitcher ever happy to come out of a game? Give me a break. Non-story, slow news day. JimG
Trouble is, KK and Herndon both stink. So asking which one you should go with is like asking whether you prefer the lethal injection or the gas chamber. Dave Clemens
Kendrick has no business being in the rotation for the Phillies...no to mention making the kind of salary that he is. I wouldn't complain if I were him. As for Herndon, what can you expect?
Baez's fate was predictable. The Phillies clearly lost that game because of the weak substitute pitchers that pitched in last night's game, in place of the regular guys. They also lost because of misplays by inexperienced players in a makeshift outfield. SteveS11
-Many of you people are short sighted fools.
---Herndon only had 3 earned runs in 11.2 June inning.
---Martinez can't hit but he has killer range in the OF. Wouldn't it be nice to have a pinch runner in the playoffs who can actually run. Lets not let Cliff pinch run in the playoffs again. Sorry not worth the risk.
Oh yeah Rube got these guys for practically nothing. No signing bonus no years of hotels and instructors. Martinez may never make it but Herndon has a good shot of being a steady 6th inning guy next year. KINGOFZED
Herndon must have pictures of someone in the front office. And Baez stinks as soon as he camne in I knew the Phils would lose. I was just surprised he didn't blow it in the ninth. Hell, Joan Baez would be better. mike l
KK should be angry; if Charlie's "plan" was to have Herndon, Carpenter and Baez pitch, I'd rather see my grandmother in there! What a stupid plan! D Brown blew this game, not Kendrick; Brown is lazy and should be playing in Bethlehem! JBinPA
Kendrick is nothing but a skinny Joe Blanton. Servicable but nothing great. If he doesn't like the way he is used he should be shipped to Houston where Brett Meyers and J.H. Happ are where he can pitch for a horrible last place team. Grapost
I hope he is angry enough to frickin leave Philly for good, who needs you. mike4912000
Kendrick deserved to stay in the game. There was no reason to take him out. He only gave up one earned run. He only threw 81 pitches. Charlie Manuel seemed to want to use this game to show Ruben Amaro how bad David Herndon and Andrew Carpenter are. How many more games does Charlie Manuel plan to lose to show Ruben Amaro how bad David Herndon and Andrew Carpenter are? Gnip Gnop
Well if Kyle Kendrick pitch workman like instead of coughing up runs maybe the manager would have a little confidence to have him go further. Everytime the Phillies give him the ball and ask him to do something he usually winds up falling on his face. Just because you sit next to Halladay doesnt mean you channel him surfbear
If Kendrick wasn't so predictable about imploding he might earn the right to stay in the game longer. All you have to do is remember his decision to "challenge" the BlueJays hitter just after being urged by his coach and team to don't throw a first pitch strike.
The Phillies are stuck with him due to other injuries. If he wants to complain, go look in the mirror. FMARK
