Brett Myers has really struggled in back-to-back starts. That's not encouraging.

Had the Phillies been able to continue their winning ways against the Atlanta Braves this week, they could have clinched the National League East in the comfort of their own homes tonight.

Instead they must wait for the final weekend of the season to make that happen.

The Phillies lost last night to the Braves, 10-4, to remain 1 1/2 games ahead of the Mets in the NL East standings with three games to play. The Mets, who blew opportunity after opportunity last night in a loss in extra innings to the Chicago Cubs, are tied with the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL wild-card lead with four games to play. Both of those teams are scheduled to play tonight. So the Phillies will open their series tomorrow night against the Washington Nationals no worse than one game up and no worse than two games up.

Baseball Prospectus gives the Phillies an 85.04 percent chance to win the division, 12.42 percent chance to win the wild card and a 97.47 percent chance to make the playoffs overall. It gives the Mets a 14.96 percent chance to win the division, a 39.59 percent chance to win the wild card and a 54.55 percent chance to make the playoffs overall. It gives the Brewers a 47.89 percent chance to win the wild card.

"We know it," Jimmy Rollins said. "We're supposed to go out there and win ball games. The last two, we haven't. We've still got three games left and that's what we concern ourselves with."

"We're fine," Brett Myers said. "It's going to come down to the last three games like it did last year. We'll see what happens."

There is a table in the middle of the Phillies clubhouse, and above that table are two dry erase boards. Last night both boards said there is a meeting Friday at 3:15 p.m. The Phillies already held their playoff share meeting, where they decide who gets what should they make the playoffs. So that's not why they are meeting. It's also not believed to be a meeting Charlie Manuel called or other Phillies officials called for some community relations activities, etc. Player meeting? Could be. Jimmy Rollins said he had no idea what it was about, but I know this: the players are meeting about something Friday. It could be nothing. It could be something. But I thought I'd point it out anyway.

Bob Ford writes about the postseason race madness that is going on right now.

In the Phillies Notebook: the Phanatic, hot dogs, hot dog launchers and bomb squads.

Reason to be concerned about Myers? Manuel said he could be concerned about Myers' confidence. Myers abandoned his fastball the last two starts, although Myers said last night it was because he wasn't getting a good downhill plane on the ball. Regardless, his next start would be in the National League division series, so you have to wonder which Myers will show up: the stud that went 7-2 with a 1.80 ERA in his first 11 starts back from the minors or the guy that went 0-2 with a 15.12 ERA in his last two starts?

*

The Mets put their fans through hell in a loss at Shea. ... CC Sabathia, pitching on short rest for the second consecutive time, wanted the ball in his hand last night.

*

If the Phillies win the East and Mets win the wild card, the Phillies would open the playoffs against the Dodgers. If the Phillies win the East and the Brewers win the wild card, the Phillies would open against the Brewers. If the Mets win the East and the Phillies win the wild card, the Phillies would open against the Cubs.

Or something like that.

Close! We had so many chances to put this thing away. It almost seems like we are waiting for the Mets to just hand us the division. What happen to taking it?

Mets bullpen bailed us out last night, and put their fanbase on suicide watch. We need 2 of 3 to put this thing away.

As I said in a previous post, I'm sure glad they have 2night off. Will hopefully help to settle the nerves.

Phils magic Number will betwo after tonight with Harden vs. Pedro, who will get shelled by the Cubs. Blanton will put forth a strong outing tomorrow vs the Nats and Lannon, who will get smoked by the Phils, so the Magic Number will be one and possibly zero by COB Friday night. So put the champagne on ice.

The Phils can't seem to win unless their backs are against the wall. It's aggravating yet exciting. Hopefully this will help them win in the playoffs but they surely have to play better than they did the last two games. Brett Myers is like the poster child for this team. You never know which Myers is going to show up. GO PHILS!!!!!!

I can't help thinking if the short rest start killed myers. Why else would ha abandon his fastball, really, unless the velocity was down? His arm is tired. I feel like he'll be fine for playoffs with the extra days rest he'll get with hamels starting game 1, hypothetically.

FLW - I agree. Just like in Chicago, Zambrano isn't the same after his no-no. Tired.

In regards to the comments made about Myers not being the same pitcher after starting on short rest, HE NEEDS TO SUCK IT UP!!!! He should live for these moments that are right here and now. Every kid in the majors grows up wanting the chance to put thier team in the playoffs. He needs to suck it up if he is tired and pitch the way he has after he was called back up. If he is tired drink a freakin Red Bull between innings, I don't care what he does. He needs to relize that this is thier time and they need to go for the Mets throats and stomp them out of the division.

The short rest didn't hurt Moyer. But then, his fast ball isn't really that fast. Maybe Brett shouldn't worry that much about his fast ball not hitting 92. And what is Hamels excuse for his last outing? He didn't have a *short rest*. I vote for Moyer to start game 1. HE's our ace! Plus, if Hamels has to pitch Sunday, it will gived him AND Myers a little extra rest.

Myers is only one problem. The offence is a big concern--AGAIN! Check out these numbers the last 7 days: Howard .217, Rollins .214, Werth .100, Coste .167, Ruiz .118, between them 7 extra base hits, 9 RBIs

Dobbs, Victorino and Utley are the only ones hitting (hear that Truth-Utley!)

He is sucking it up, you don't hear him whining about it at all. His arm probably feels fine, but the radar gun says what it says. The muscles simply take more time to rebuild themselves after pitching on short rest. No amount of protien shakes, red bull or "sucking it up" will change that.

I am a huge Werth fan, but it is obvious his funk is due to fatigue. He is dragging his bat through the zone (oops did not intend to sound Wheelsish) and his outs are mostly to right field. Hopefully this day of rest will revitalize him.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
