Jenkins on the DL

POSTED: Saturday, August 23, 2008, 3:47 PM

The Phillies placed rightfielder Geoff Jenkins on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hip flexor. To take his place on the 25-man roster, the Phillies purchased the contract of infielder Andy Tracy from triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Jenkins was hitting .246 with nine homers and 29 RBIs in 284 at-bats.

Tracy, who hits lefthanded, was hitting .288 with 21 home runs and 84 RBIs for the IronPigs. He hit .224 with 13 homers and 41 RBIs in 263 at-bats in parts of three seasons with the Montreal Expos and Colorado Rockies. He hasn't been in the majors since the end of the 2004 season with the Rockies.

Never wish for someone to be hurt, but Jenkins is a spare. Yet another terrible free agent acquisition by Philly mgmt.

Look people, Jenkins didnt play great this year, but give the guy a break. He could come back next year and really smash the ball...who knows. Well good game today, maybe that play out in center will help turn things around for the Phils! GO PHILS!!!!

Great game today! I was thrilled to see Utley, Howard & Burrell's offense come alive. Burrell with his personal best of 5 RBIs in a game. Glad to see Cole H. getting some run support finally. Also Utley & Howard having two good games in a row! PLEASE,PLEASE let this be the offense finally coming out of hibernation. Even though he wasn't having a great yr., not good news about Jenkins going on the DL. Ironic too since he hits well against the Dodgers and had a hit right before his injury.

This replacing Aaron Rowand with Geoff Jenkins joke sure does remind you of Lenny Dykstra for Ricky Otero, huh?

If Gillick had to chose between re-signing Rowand or trading for Lidge, Gillick made the correct decision. Lidge has been the team's MVP this season.

Werth is playing better and more often. I am interested to see how Tracy can do in a possible pinch hitting role in case they decide to play dobbs all the time at third base.

They are going to ease Feliz back into third. Dobbs will not play all the time.

Guys,Dobbs is the number one off the bench. Feliz is our third baseban and a great one. Management made teh right choice and got a 3B who plays Defence. the fab 4 (rollins, Chase, Howard, Pat) supply the offene. The deal was Lidge instead of Rowland and was another great move. THe only off season move not working out is Junkins and as someone said, there's always next year. We still need a catcher and a set up guy during off season though. Grest win, keep it going. Sweep the Dodgers would be sweet revenge for last week

This is not a bad thing. All due respect to Jenkins, his contribution to the offense this season has been a little better than taguchi. Getting more at bats for Werth can only be positive for a lineup that needs more production.

Tracy is a super LH option off the bench. In the IL he was an RBI machine. Bad break for Jenkins, seems like a good guy whose career had been solid with the Brews. Maybe he will be able to get it going in '09. Hard to classify Feliz as a 'great one.'

I'd like ot see if any left-handed bats passed through waivers and see if there is someone we can pick up- I suspect on September 1 Greg Golson will join the team as the speed option off the bench. I think Werth pays best with a day or two off per week over the long haul but with only five weeks left in the season, he'll need to suck it up. Great crowd again yesterday, let's give the team the same support tonight and make it three in a row. GO PHILS!

I follow the Phils day to day all year round. I don't recall any talk around sacrificing Rowand for Lidge. Pat Gillick has done some great things considering what his restrictions are but loosing Rowand was not a great move for the organization his leadership has been missed big time. Not Gillick's fault, Montys fault. The team has a lot of talent and will eventually win a NLCS but it may take a change of manager to do that. Yesterday the bottom of the order played like a bottom of the order with the top 5 providing all the offense. The break up of Utley and Howard has worked plus Utley is in the slot where he belongs. The only other change I would make is find a #3 hitter to hit in front of Burrell at #4. Howard does not deserve to bat cleanup with a .168 BA over the last month. I am a long time Howard fan. I believed when he was a rookie he would some day hit for the crown but Hr Derbys and MVP titles have caused him to sacrifice Average for Hr's. This team could be the greatest team in the national league in a long time if only players like Rollins, Utley, and Howard put in the work necessary to win. Werth, Coste, & Dobbs(The Natural) have provided this team with offense and defense needed to get through the rough times lets hope they get a little break now. Jenkins just recently has started to hit again and its a bad break for him to get hurt right when things are starting to turn around. His play in right has been great. Get well soon Geoff.

Is there any relationship between the Phillies bench options of Andy Tracy, Mike Cervenak, T.J. Bohn, Chris Snelling, and Brad Harman; and the fact they have managed to win one championship in 130 years? Yet we continue to pack the stadium each game. Who sees a commitment to this team winning a championship?

Donald and Marson might even make the team next year and that could energize the team. BTW, if the Phils had gotten Manny, the Phils wanted the Sox to take Jenkins. No was their answer.

Wally, the phils didn't "trade" Rowland for Lidge, but if they had spent for Rowland they wouldn't have spent for Lidge, keeping Myers as closer instead and bringing in who knows as a starter. We'll never know how Myers would have done as a closer this year, but Lidge has been lights out and myers, despite his first half, has been showing why we wanted him as a starter lately.

OK Jeff but I think the problem was not the money, it was the years. I don't like long term contracts W/O incentives clauses because I believe they can cause complaciency. In the off season Gillick repearedly said "we are not interested in a starter our #1 priority is a closer" which makes Myers a starter by default. Right? The problem was Myers liked the idea of pitching 3 innings a week to the tune of 9 mil/yr. Less mental prep and less work.

Once again, we're not swinging at strikes...we're standing around waiting for the HR instead of putting the pressure on the defense.....not a good 1st inning.

I know this has been said many a times now, but Carlos Ruiz is just terrible. Horrible at bat with Blanton hitting behind him. Got pitches to hit too. And he is just terrible defensively. NEED MORE COSTE!

I have no idea what Ryan Howard is thinking or seeing at the plate. He had virtually the entire left side of the infield open, a 3-0 count (or maybe it was 2-1), and the best he could do is hit a very weak ground ball to second? Again? This typifies where the frustration comes from...players refusing to learn, refusing to give in and do the correct thing. It's only four innings so there is obviously time, but as of yet the Phillies have zero hits. I see your point Mark1 about using/not using speed on the bases. Usually in that situation, with your cleanup hitter up, you wouldn't steal, but here, with the way Ryan has struggled all year, maybe a steal attempt should have been made.

Who'd have thunk it? Ruiz with the 1st hit and Chase putting a good swing on a tough pitch to drive him in...Jstroll needs to look at the video of his ABs from this game to see that he's swinging like Pete Incaviglia and pulling his head off hittable pitches, instead of just putting it in play as a single.....looks like he fell in love with his slugging avg from last year to me.........he is and was always meant to be a singles/doubles hitter.....that's how he needs to play to shut Phillie fans up......Willie Stargell he ain't.

Everyone, relax. The offense has been a lot better the last couple of games, tonight we're facing a good pitcher. Kuroda has been like Hamels for the Phils, good stuff but not much run support, the reocrd does not show how good he is. Sometimes you have to win low-scoring games-let's not nitpick each AB. Whatever or however, it is a tie game after five and we can get within 1/2 game of the Mets with a win. Hang in there and ride it out! GO PHILS!

Mark- I know he's not Cy Young but he's a good major league pitcher. They aren't going to score 10 runs every night, as we've learned in July/August-if they get two, let's hold the Dodgers to one- uh/oh, having a bad thunderstorm here in San Antonio and we just lost our cable, time to turn on the XM radio.

2 hits thru 8 innings is not a good ratio for a ML team, unless you're the KC Royals......not the Phillies, not in this ballpark, not against this pitching......this wasn't Koufax or Drysdale we were facing tonight.

Rollins and Howard are lookin' real, real bad right now. UPDATE: As I write, Feliza comes through big YES! Back on point, Howard changing his uniform was pretty lame. Now if Jimmy can come through... down 1-2... even at 2-2... and a weak grounder to first. Not good. But hey, we're still alive. Go Phils!

So lets not go there... You feel me ? Great win Phils, that Victorino has become the spark-plug for this team.. Howard and Rollins along with other core players are needed if we are to go to the next level (championship) ..

The Rollins situation is sad, but I can't say it surprises me. He was always cocky and stubborn. How many years was he impatient at the plate as a leadoff hitter, swinging at the first pitch, and refused to listen to any advice. He was a hero for predicting we'd win it all last year, becuase he was right. If they flopped it would have been seen as a really stupid comment that motivated the Mets. I give Charlie a lot of credit for supporting his players. Jimmy should be burried down in the lineup with Victorino leading off right now. There is no justification for Jimmy leading off given his performance over the past few weeks: it's killing us and him! He needs a break from all the pressure, but that's not going to happen.

Pat H....Agree about Victorino. Really heads up to spot Ramirez fielding that ball a bit too routinely and assuming he wouldn't even be thinking 2nd base. Also, you're dead on about Rollins (0-5) and Howard (0-4). They both looked miserable. Plus, Howard had to ruin the positive mojo from what would have to be the greatest defensive play he has ever made by getting picked off first. Where was his head exactly? No, don't tell me.

I have much preferred Werth all season and still can not figure out why he isn't the full-time starter by now. Jenkins has been a huge disappointment this season. So, let's compare stats. BATTING AVERAGE Werth: .266 Jenkins: .246 RUNS SCORED Werth: 48 Jenkins: 27 HOME RUNS Werth: 17 Jenkins: 9 RUNS BATTED IN Werth: 48 Jenkins: 29 STOLEN BASES Werth: 12 Jenkins: 1 ON-BASE PLUS SLUGGING Werth: .844 Jenkins: .698 Come on, Charlie!
