J-Roll to return to show to clarify comments

Just got this e-mail from Best Damn Sports Show Period:
LOS ANGELES -- After making comments yesterday on Fox Sports Net’s Best Damn Sports Show Period about Philadelphia fans being frontrunners that left the phone lines buzzing and filled the blogs up with hundreds of comments, Philadelphia SS Jimmy Rollins is coming back on the show today to discuss the reaction to his interview.
On Wednesday, Rollins had this to say about Philly fans to BDSSP hosts Chris Rose and John Salley:
“…it's one of those cities. I might catch some flak for saying this, but, you know, they're front-runners. When you're doing good, they're on your side. When you're doing bad, they're completely against you. For example, Ryan (Howard) is from St. Louis. St. Louis, it seems like they support their team. They're encouraging.""
Rollins will join the show via telephone before the Phillies take on the Dodgers.
At least he is going to acknowledge it and maybe admit he messed up. People can be forgiving. I hope he apologizes and then moves on and works hard from here on out. We shall see. scars73- Carried over from previous post: I actually think much of this is just a very poor choice of words on Jimmy's part. Error #1: Using the word 'frontrunners'. That's just the wrong term, even for what he went on to say. Frontrunners cheer for their team when they're winning and just bail when they're losing. Meaning they don't pay attention. That's not what he was saying. Error #2: He said that when you're doing bad, the fans "completely against you." He should have said when you're doing bad the fans "let you know about it." Error #3: Comparing Philly fans to St. Louis fans. No explanation necessary. Bottom line is that we'd all be fine with him if he had just said, "Hey, the fans in Philly are TOUGH." Maybe that's the approach he'll take on the show tonight. Let's just hope he doesn't make it worse. Oh, and can we please win tonight? bobby
If Jimmy hoists a World Series trophy over his head while wearing Phillies Red, he can call me whatever the heck he wants. Until then, he can call me a season ticket holder. Frank Lloyd Wrong
bobby: you want them to win a game? Aren't you being too hard and demanding a fan? I mean we wouldn't want rollins to feel unapreciated would we (LMFAO) jeff gross
Bobby I agree with your Error #1 he inaccurately defines the word front-runner. Phils fans are there regardless. If you compare Phillies attendance recent history to another team like the Mets, they have many more years with worse attendance than we do. Everything else he said is spot-on. So be nice and polite and win or be a total $#@! and win. But just win! CyHamels
let's hope myers pitches well tonight. He may need to hit a home run, though as he'll get no offensive support jeff gross
Hmmmmmm? Do you think he got some flack from the team/management? "Clarifying his comment" doesn't necessarily equate to an apology. We'll see. Maybe this whole episode will fire everyone up. Something "Uncle Chuck" hasn't been able to do. Norma
Jimmy is right about us as fans. He is just wrong in condemning us for it. He plays a sport that is easily measured by statistics. His are not as good this year and so the fans know that he is capable of more. We also have proof that he isn't trying his hardest and that is an UNFORGIVABLE SIN in this city. You can't be late for games not run your fastest and expect adulation. If he wants to fly under the radar and not get criticized for poor play... go somewhere else! Josh M
Bobby...Great idea you had at the end of the last thread about getting back to baseball. I agree this is another huge start for Myers. I have said before that I hope he pitches well the rest of the way. First of all, we need him now. Second, the better he pitches, the higher his trade value. I really think we should get what we can from him now and then part ways. I think he is just too much of a wild card, both on and off the field. I have concerns for us in the future because there is no way of knowing what he will give us next year and beyond. He is too unreliable and uncontrollable to commit to, IMO. The last reason why I hope Myers has truly turned it around is that the Phils tend to stick with guys (see Eaton, Adam). Since I think we can realistically expect to see Myers in the rotation next year, I hope he keeps it together so we can count on him for 35 starts. bski

norma: the lack of fire in this team makes me long for Bowa--did i just say that?? jeff gross
Hey, he said what he honestly felt. Maybe we got a glimpse of the real J-Roll. He has always been media savvy and articulate. Backpeddling now won't undo the insult to the city's rep and the fans. Add on to that the lack of hustle(more than once), the lateness, the nonchalant demeanor this year...his goose is cooked with fans, sponsers and I suspect, the front office (assuming they are out of their coma). His agent must be crying his eyes out. Too call out a cities fans, especially when you are having an off year...maybe he can get Crash Davis to go over the cliche thing with him. jimmymack- I wonder if Jimmy can borrow Mike Schmidt's dreadlock wig for Tuesday night. Man, I think that would be an awesome tension-breaker! bobby
bobby.....Great idea! That wig certainly started a renewed love affair for Schmidty! And jeff....Bowa??? Argh! LOL!!! Norma
Congrats to Todd, his well balanced look on his Frontrunners post has passed 230 comments, pretty impressive. Not sure if that's the record. I remember when the Zo Zone blog started and 15 was a good day sometimes. Hey, we might as well celebrate something, the team ain't getting it done...LOL jimmymack
