Iguchi Is Back

POSTED: Friday, September 5, 2008, 3:05 PM

Tadahito Iguchi is back.

The Phillies are expected to announce today that Iguchi has come to a contract agreement with the Phillies, a baseball source told The Inquirer. The San Diego Padres recently released Iguchi on Monday.

Iguchi is expected to join the Phillies before tomorrow's game against the Mets. He missed nearly two months this season because of a separated right shoulder. He hit .231 with two homers and 24 RBIs in 81 games for the Padres. He hit .309 against NL East teams.

Iguchi, who spent two months with the Phillies last season, would be ineligible for the postseason should the Phillies win the NL East or wild card.

Update: It's official. The Phillies have signed Iguchi. They will make room for Iguchi on the 40-man roster before tomorrow's game.

Hopefully he helps. He can't be a worse option than Bruntlett or Taguchi... if he hits for the Phils like he did last season, he can hopefully give Utley a day off here and there, which clearly would help. Plus, he a smart player, plays hard, and with passion. This team could certainly use a little more of all of those things.

Unless it's a contract that extends beyond this yae, i'm not sure I see the point.

At least this give So Taguchi someone to talk to on the bench.

I know it's nice to have veteran bats around for the bench, but hopefully he hits better here than he did the rest of the year. If he goes 1 for his first 8, I'd call it a net loss when you could have someone else taking the same ABs.

Another move that is too little too late. Is this the move that is going to secure the pennant? A released utility (journeyman) infielder... I dont think so. Gee whiz... CC Sabathia or Tadahito Iguchi. Let me think about that for a nano-second. With the Phillies having a blockbuster year at the ticket gates, why couldnt they spend some more money before the trade deadline and rent a player to help win the pennant and the World Series? The Phillies and Eagles dont care about championships. They only want to field a competitive team so that they can maximize ticket revenues and say look how close we came... And us dummies keep buying their tickets and getting pumped up hoping for a championship. When will we learn?

I like Iguchi too and it'll be good to see him back. He's a welcome addition off the bench and I think is a better option than Bruntlett. It'd be nice to see him sign a few year deal in the offseason. . .

The Phillies lack two things that aren't in the stats: 1) Leadership 2) Swagger you can always develope swagger but leadership is harder to find. Rollins or Utley seem to fit the mold but but neither one has been able to put the team on their back and perform. Other than a true ace at the top of the rotation a leader with a strong personality is what the Phillies need, they are a nice club with a lot of pieces but they need some glue type of guys (Aaron Rowand) to make the pieces fit.

Utley has had maybe two days off all year, and now they are going to give him days off "here and there" with 22 games left? That's pretty funny.
