Tuesday, the Phillies were hopeful that Raul Ibanez would play in a rehab game yesterday.  He did not, though he and the front office said they were just being careful. Yesterday, they were optimistic he would play today. He won't.  Today, they say they are hopeful he will play tomorrow. Ibanez will work out with the Reading Phillies today.

I'm not saying he's experiencing setbacks, and he says he isn't.  But it is safe to say this isn't the best-case scenario.

Also, Brett Myers had a follow-up exam with Dr. Bryan Kelly yesterday, the doc who performed his hip surgery. Myers was cleared to begin a throwing program in two weeks.

Good news about Myers. Not so good about Ibanez, but I'd rather him come back healthy than questionable, risking reinjury.

Andy, what does this mean for Myers in terms of his expected time for rehab? I'm assuming he's on a normal to rapid pace but is still very unlikely to be ready to pitch this season?

dont be dumb phillies: keep raul in a hyperbaric chamber until after the allstar break. we need this guy 100% for the stretch run.

Andy, another one on Myers - Does it make any difference to his rehab time and potential to pitch in October if he's slated to be a starter vs. a reliever? Is that even a possible option? I know people commenting on these blogs have suggested that as an idea, though I don't know that the team, Myers, or anyone with any actualy knowledge has suggested as much.

The baseball lately has been awful as have the injuries. On the good side of things, All-Star break coming up then Birds training camp, then the stretch run.

Unless the team starts hitting consistently the issues of Myers and Ibanez won't make a difference.

interesting idea B in DC. Make Myers the closer, get rid of Lidge, and pick up a decent #2. Good work, but who wants a closer who can't buy a save and still has2 years left on a contract?

I was hoping to see Ibanez in Reading tonight.

Not saying they should make Myers the closer - but if he comes back in October and they're still playing, maybe he could throw an inning here or there. Every inning's like the ninth in the playoffs, so he could probably get good and amped up even for the sixth if need be.

get rid of lidge!?!? are you insane? just last year he had the best season as a closer in phillies, maybe even league history. he goes through one rough patch, and you're already saying we should ship him out? what did you expect? 100 saves in a row? come on!

Stanley - couldn't have said better myself. I guess after all the bad years, most fans can't stand slumps. But then what's with our obsession for Pat Burrell? Lidge did 40+ in a row since joining the Phils - can anyone say Flash Gordon?? How many in a row for him? 5?

"Get rid of Lidge." - Another WIPtard polluting the comments section. Are you the same guy who called Eskin saying the Phillies should package Dobbs, Bruntlett, and Zurgurski for Lincecum and Rowand?

How about Bruntlett for a bag of bats? Or at least a sack of BP balls.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
