The injury list grows by the day and the only comfort in that is the calendar. Better now than October, right?

Ryan Howard is the latest regular missing from Charlie Manuel's lineup. He has inflammation (bursitis) in his left ankle and heel area, Ruben Amaro Jr. said. It's the same ankle he sprained last season.

Amaro said Howard is day-to-day and intimated that if it were the postseason, Howard could play. The GM said a day or two off wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for his first baseman, which is the truth.

As for Raul Ibanez, he will need at least a few more days to recover from left groin soreness. It's possible he receives an injection to help rid of the inflammation.

That's part of the reason why the Phillies placed Cole Hamels on the disabled list. Infielder Pete Orr was recalled from triple A to serve as an extra body on the bench with Ibanez sidelined.

Hamels, by the way, threw his bullpen session as scheduled. He was "absolutely fabulous," according to pitching coach Rich Dubee. He will start Monday in Cincinnati.

The missing bodies makes Tuesday's lineup look a bit different:

1. Shane Victorino 8
2. Placido Polanco 5
3. Chase Utley 4
4. Hunter Pence 9
5. John Mayberry Jr. 3
6. Ben Francisco 7
7. Wilson Valdez 6
8. Brian Schneider 2
9. Vance Worley 1

So nice not having the 8ks that Ibanez and Howard would have given this lineup tonight. Everybody hits! Did anyone get to see the look on Howard's face as he watched Mayberry launch another HR? It was priceless......I'm liking a platoon at 1st more and more......

Utley just got hit so Martinez replaced him, in this blow-out. Instead of Orr,I waiting for Moss to replace Gload. Charlie cannot keep this poor injured guy on the roster. If he does, it is an automatic out.

I think the subs are better anyway right now. Mayberry has more 2 strike HRs and more HRs off of quality pitchers than Howard this season. Victorino is a far better lead off batter than Rollins. Ibanez brings nothing to the table anymore. Despite his limited bat, Valdez always seems to step up and have good at bats in key situations. Maybe if the highly paid guys get some bench time, they will become humble enough to make much needed adjustments like Mayberry did.

@Mark1pt...you are correct about that look...Ibanez' was much more the team player when camera was on him after Jr's line drive single to left...clapping and smilling, gently at least.

After watching this last offensive showing, I am increasingly getting disenchanted with Ryan Howard. I know the guy is paid to drive in runs, but how about some better bat discipline? He has been in the bigs for over 7 seasons now. Yea I know he is paid to drive in runs, but how about coming up and there is momentum in the inning, and they have scored a run or two, and he rolls over on a pitch and grounds to first or second. Or strikes out on a pitch wayyyyy inside and down. Or way outside and down. Granted major league pitchers have great stuff, but for crying out loud, he gets himself out wayyy to much. Look once again, I am a big RH fan but at the same time.. I am tired of him at least not having some plate discipline. He should be hitting about 40 points higher. Period. JIM

At this point it is about getting the starters rested and healthy. A nice plus that Mayberry can play every day and prove if he's ready to be a full time player next year.

This season starts in October. Get them healthy and ready, whatever it takes.

gkw62, Howard is batting .312 with RISP (.333 with RISP and two outs). Chase, btw, is batting .256/.289 in those situations. I love Chase as well, but the stats don't lie. Howard is also batting .289 with runners on.

Did anyone notice that had it not been for a Little League outfield of the Mets, they would have lost last night. Won't have any little leaguers in the playoffs.....
