Howard leaves game with left ankle sprain

UPDATE (3:13 p.m.): Howard had X-rays on his left ankle and right elbow. Both were negative. They checked out the right elbow after he was hit by a pitch. So that's good news for now.
WASHINGTON -- What next?
Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard has left Sunday's game in the first inning with a left ankle sprain. He is being taken for X-rays during the game. He had to be helped off the field by manager Charlie Manuel and assistant athletic trainer Mark Andersen. It did not look good.
After overrunning second on a single to right, Howard scrambled back to the bag but jammed his left ankle into the ground. The rest of his knee buckled and he fell to the ground. Howard did get back to the bag in time.
Howard called for time and second-base umpire Dana DeMuth saw Howard in pain and called for a trainer from the Phillies dugout. After a few minutes of lying on the ground, Howard put weight on the leg but had to be helped off the field.
Cody Ransom pinch ran for Howard and scored on a Domonic Brown single.
The lone Phillies regular not to be injured this season is Jayson Werth. We will update Howard's status as we hear information.
- Big man out for any length of time and it's all she wrote for this year. The injuries just seem to be too much to overcome this year.
back to the back? nice job Matt, as usual. carlosbeltran
There goes the season. Injury bug has hit them big time this year and it continues. God don't let it hit the Eagles too like it seems to do every pre season. slade1955- After last nights game, I gave up too. Who cares, take the rest of the season off.
