Ryan Howard informed Team USA manager Davey Johnson that he won't compete in the World Baseball Classic this spring.

"He feels like he needs to spend his time in the spring getting ready for the season so he gets off to a better start," Johnson said.

Jimmy Rollins will play for Team USA. Cole Hamels and Brad Lidge also declined invitations.

Thanks to everybody who came to Barnes & Noble in Deptford last night for the signing of Champions!, which is No. 6 on amazon.com's best seller list for sports books. We sold every book in the store. Obviously, I'm biased, but you won't find a better book to commemorate the 2008 World Series championship season. The photos inside this book are incredible. (The writing isn't bad, either.)

I saw this today at We Should Be GM's. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. But at least WSBGM's had the good sense to apologize in advance.

Glad to see most of the team is declining to play in the WBC. It's an honor to be invited. But still just exhibition games. The team needs to focus on another WS win!

The JibJab was a riot! Charlie has some moves! LOL! What's even funnier....A friend of mine made a very similar one. Plus, one of the two of us dancing with Chase and Pat! I just order "Champions" from Amazon, yesterday. Guess I helped make it #6!

Todd, any appearances scheduled for the western suburbs? It now does have settlers and paved roads, ya know?

adam eaton's available to throw meaningful innings for the stars and stripes. If they wanted this to be a meaningful event they should play it after the playoffs, when everyone is stretched out.

I agree with jimmy! I wish there was a way for fans to be notified about any Phillies related public appearances. You would think they would post them on the Phillies website, but NOOOO! Last week, Charlie was at a sports store just a couple of miles from my house, and I knew nothing about it. How the heck do people find out about these things, to generate such large crowds?

As far as I know, I'm not aware of any more signings, but I would think there would be more. The demand obviously is there, you know? If I hear of anything, I'll make sure to post it.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
