Howard to see doctor

POSTED: Saturday, February 25, 2012, 1:38 PM

CLEARWATER, Fla. —

UPDATE (7:03 p.m.): Ruben Amaro Jr. wanted to clarify Charlie Manuel's comments late Saturday evening. Amaro said Ryan Howard developed a seroma, a type of small cyst, near his wound. That is not the reason for Howard's previously scheduled visit to the doctor.

"The reason to see doctor was routine," Amaro said. "He might treat it. Ryan is doing fine. We don't view it as a setback."

EARLIER:

The recovery process for Ryan Howard will not necessarily always follow a straight line. Such is the nature of a serious injury, like the ruptured Achilles tendon.

Howard will leave camp Sunday night for at least two days to see Mark Myerson, the surgeon who repaired the tendon, in Baltimore. Ruben Amaro Jr. called it a "routine check-up," but Howard was seen with a large bandage on the back of his ankle Saturday morning.

Charlie Manuel said Howard suffered "a little setback" because of an infection where the surgical incision was made.

"Where the incision was, sometimes they leave stitches to dissolve," Manuel said. "One broke through the skin and was hanging out. It was causing a little infection. They pulled it out."

Howard took batting practice Saturday with his teammates and launched a few bombs, one of which hit Jose Contreras' big truck. But the team is being cautious with Howard's return, and that's why he'll head to Baltimore and miss at least two days of workouts.

"They'll be looking and testing him," Manuel said. "That's how I understand. It was nothing they were really alarmed about."

Amaro said Howard has progressed. The first baseman could possibly return in time for workouts Wednesday.

"We thought it was a good idea for him to go back there," Amaro said. "... He's doing pretty well. He's progressing pretty well, and it's a good idea for him to see him before he continues forward with more activities."

Do a number of people want to show you how much they know about the injury and setback. It seems that way. At this point Howard's return time is questionable. Will he be at full strength is also unknown.

I like Howard and have defended him and his numbers repeatedly on this site. But what would the Rangers give in exchange for him? I mean, Detroit has Prince and the Angels have Pujols. Hamilton has been repeatedly off the wagon this year. Howard projects as an excellent DH and not playing the field would help his Achilles. Just askin'.

Phillies should trade Cole Hamels for Joey Votto right now.

Hum, the Reds traded a pretty good 1B prospect in Yonder Alonso in the Matt Latos trade so they could keep Votto. It ain't going to happen.

Some of you are hilarious. Let's cancel the season, eh? But I'd agree RH may not be himself at any point of this season, a man his size blowing out an achilles. No guarantee he ever will, time will tell. But this looks like a normal part of the rehab from here.

This team doesn't learn from it's mistakes. There is no reason to rush or push Howard back into the line-up - we need him firing on all cylinders in October; just as it is not up to Utley how many games he plays or Doc or Cliff - how many innings they pitch in May or June. The Manager makes these decisions - oops I forgot - he's incapable.

He's going to have a lot of "little setbacks" when he faces lefthanders.

This sounds minor so unless the real story is different, I'm not concerned.

Today is the day I stop reading the idiotic comments that follow Phillies' articles on this site. Most of you are whining, spoiled brats who are miserable people and find something negative to write about in every story. Most baseball fans in the country would have gladly traded their baseball team's play over the last 4 plus years for that of the Phillies. 2 World Series appearances (1 championship and 1 loss to the Yankees)...4 consecutive NL East championships...102 wins last year...The best starting pitching staff in baseball last year, some monster years offensively, etc. But to listen to you guys, the Phillies have been a 2nd division team year after year, or a team with some talent, but can never win a big game...You should start appreciating what you have in the Phillies, because this has been a golden era of baseball in Philly and historically, that doesn't happen too often.

Chris "Wheels" Wheeler is reporting Jim Thome is fielding wiffle balls at first base hit to him by an 8 year old. Jim is scooping them up at a 60% clip.

He had a minor set back when he failed to hit the ball in the world series and NLCS when it meant most the last 2 years!

Uncle Cholly is trying to rush Ryan back because he knows his man Jim can no longer play first base. If Cholly continues to rush Ryan back and he goes down for the whole season, Cholly should be fired.
