Holliday to Oakland
Todd Zolecki
Matt Holliday appears headed to the Oakland A's.
The fact that he's headed to the A's is a surprise. The fact that he isn't headed to the Phillies isn't a surprise. The asking price for Holliday had been too high for the Phillies.

I don't know what sense this makes for Oakland. There is no way they are keeping Holliday after 2009. I know Oakland got a pile of prospects in the Haren/Harden/Blanton deals and that they will get compensatory draft picks when Holliday leaves, but still....I don't see him vaulting them into contention next year. bski
Again, good luck to Holliday and Boras when they try to land that Scott-Boras-Special Mega-deal next winter, when Holliday will probably be coming off two straight years of delcining power numbers. How is a guy going to hit at al moving from Coors to the Coliseum? From the Rockies lineup, to the A's? This move will prove if Billy Beane knows anything other than stockpiling highly touted prospects and taking too much credit when 1 out of 5 pans out. RollinsWasRight
bski: they are supposedly going to spend some money this offseason, and think they will somehow make up something like 27 games in the standings. I don't see it either. I don't see how this deal makes sense for anyone but Colorado. Boras has to be fuming right now. RollinsWasRight
OK, now that Holliday is scratched from our list, time to move on. I saw this article today on fannation.com......"One thing you see with successful managers is them getting more power on personnel. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel fired third base coach Steve Smith after the season and is pretty open concerning his desire to obtain Manny Ramirez. The cost might be prohibitive, but never underestimate the Phillies' ability to go after a player they want. They offered Mike Lowell a four-year deal last offseason. With new general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. taking over for Pat Gillick, the Phillies might be more apt to go along with Manuel's wishes. "I think Manny is in the best shape that I've ever seen him in," Manuel said. "His lower body is very strong. His legs are strong. You can tell by the way he hits and the way he moves around in the outfield. He's got a lot of baseball left in him.".....If Manuel is talking to the press so openly about Manny, he must be talking to Amaro as well. I don't see it happening (too much money + too many years + too much unpredictability = way too much risk), but it is interesting, no? bski
After Manny and Holliday, there's a HUGE dropoff in available right-handed outfielders. I honestly don't see any Free Agent who fills that need for the Phils. Is anyone aware of teams looking to trade away their rightfielder? Sully
Boras fuming? Seeing as how he's Holliday's agent, I'd bet he had some part in the trade talks. I was a bit surprised, though, that the deal didn't get done with St.L. They seemed to be giving the house for the guy. Philth- This is great news for the Phillies. We didn't have to lose good young players for a one-year rental, the Mets didn't get him either and he went to another league. Now, after one year Amaro can go after Holliday, if he decides to get a platoon player this year. EL Zorro
Zorro, after a year trying to hit in the black hole, his value will be way down (although Boras won't admit it until about February 2010). RollinsWasRight
An article posted on FanNation.com? FanNation has even more dopes contributing to it than WIP. Captain Awesome
Holliday is an avg player. 25 HR's and 88 rbi's in Colorado. What the heck is so special about him? Dobbs/Jenkins could easily put up similar numbers for about a 1/3rd of the price. Manny isn't coming here forget it....The Phillies would immediately lose all chemistry. think Assante Samuel for an ex... Truth
They won't sign Ramirez--no matter how much Charlie wants him. Boras wants a 6 year deal--worth about 25M per season. The Cards dropped out of the Holliday deal during the weekend--they were talking about trading Duncan, Ankiel, or the other OF they had as one of the players. Right now Amaro is talking about how he wants to shore up the rotation and maybe the bullpen. There are plenty of SP and RP that they could sign with that money. That said, there are rumors that they could go after Rocco Baldelli--they've like him for years. Of course, they could always get Bourn back from Houston and move Victorino to right and Werth to left. bobbyuk
While I agree with the philosophy that they do not need a superstar in LF, I hate the notion of Rocco Baldelli. The guy is the epitome of high-risk, low-reward. He is a nice player when he is on the field, but nothing special. And he can't stay on the field for an entire season, and no one knows if he will ever be able to stay on the field for even an entire game (although, that could be compared to the Burrell-defensive sub situation). I worry that at any moment Rocco could find himself in the hospital for a month. RollinsWasRight
Since when is it so difficult to find a right-handed OF who can knock in 85+ runs? Aren't run producing OFs supposed to be the easiest commodity in baseball to find? RollinsWasRight- Yeah Rollins, that's why it would be tempting to go after him if Amaro does not solve the LF situation this year. I expect he will be 'cheaper.' EL Zorro
If they obtain Baldelli, I doubt they'll add him with the intention of him being an everyday player. Most likely, they will platoon him a combination of Dobbs, Jenkins and Stairs. That platoon has the potential for much more consistent production than what has been gotten from Burrell. I don't think it's a bad idea. severthetoe
