The Phillies found somebody to take infielder Wes Helms off their hands.

They traded Helms to the Florida Marlins tonight for cash or a player to be named later. It's unclear how much cash would be involved, but the Phillies certainly wanted somebody to pay at least some portion of his $2.9 million salary, which includes a $750,000 buyout for a 2009 club option. The Phillies designated Helms for assignment Wednesday when they signed righthander Rudy Seanez as a free agent.

Wow! That was fast. Can't say I'm disappointed.

Now that the Phillies dumped some payroll by trading Helms, what are the chances they go after someone like Claudio Vargas for pitching help? He can eat up innings for them and would be an upgrade over Eaton.

Todd, can you get more what we got for Helms, or what, if anything, we are still on the hook for at this point? I remember a few months ago the fish were interested in him but only wanted to pay $1 million of the $2.5 million 2008 contract, and the Phils didn't think that was enough. Was there any mention of the Phils pay any portion of the contract for 2008?

Can someone please tell me what CHad Durbin was doing in in a tie game in the 9th inning, especially with Lidge back and why Gordon only threw 1/3 of an inning? Oh, and why was Eaton left in so long, to the point where he tired and gave up another run? They should have been happy with his 7 innings. Please get rid of Charlie and Gillick!!!! They know they have very little pitching and still Gillick/managment did nothing about it. And please don't give me they got Kris Benson and Durbin!

Eaton was pitching great and the bullpen was stretched thin. Charlie did the right thing in leaving him in. It just didn't work out. That's baseball.

Truth
Once again this bastion of public freedom is refusing to post perfectly sane, rational pts. A NEWSPAPER refuses to post commentgs that are not inflamatory just debate in the BLOG section. What a joke the Inquirer is....

Above: careful stepping down off that soapbox. Keeping Eaton in was fine. They lost. Like somebody said, that's baseball.

Hey Norma, I was wondering the same thing about why no one posts after they win. I know its early in the season, but I thought more people would be posting in general. I guess its the new lame PHILLIES ZONE!
