Happ and Taschner in, Majewski to minors

Lefthanders J.A. Happ and Jack Taschner have made the Phillies roster, according to GM Ruben Amaro Jr. The Inquirer reported earlier this week that the two pitchers were likely to earn the final bullpen spots. RHP Gary Majewski will be reassigned to the minor leagues following this weekend’s exhibition series against Tampa Bay.

Happ, of course, lost the competition for fifth starter to Chan Ho Park, but remained dedicated to earning a bullpen job. Taschner was acquired March 27 from the San Francisco Giants for catcher Ronny Paulino.
I asked Majewski yesterday how he would feel about a minor league assignment after an impressive spring in big-league camp. A laid-back guy, he shrugged and said that he hoped he’d given the Phillies a reason to call him up if needed during the season. He wanted to make the team, or course, but saw that it was unlikely. Majewski will be a valuable insurance policy against any bullpen issues that could occur.
It is also worth noting the Phils have not officially named Miguel Cairo to the roster, even after Gary Sheffield signed with the Mets. The team liked Cairo more than Marcus Giles, but they sure don’t seem to love him.
