'No structural damage' to Hamels' elbow

According to Phillies PR man Greg Casterioto, Cole Hamels was examined this morning as scheduled by the team physician, and the initial report was positive, indicating "no structural damage." That's all we have for now; we should hear from Ruben Amaro Jr. later.

'No structural damage' to Hamels' elbow

POSTED: Tuesday, March 17, 2009, 10:46 AM

Here's the Colbert Report, delivered to reporters by Ruben Amaro Jr. and trainer Scott Sheridan, and relayed to me by Jim Salisbury:

Amaro: ``He had an MRI and a dynamic ultrasound. There’s no structural damage to his ligament. In fact, there’s no structural damage at all....It’s pretty much the scenario we thought going into this. It’s relatively good news. Anytime a procedure like this has to be done, it’s a concern. But relatively speaking, it’s good news....There is some inflammation in the posterior lateral aspect of the elbow. It was treated with a shot of cortisone."

The shot requires Hamels take the next two days off. After that, he can return to his throwing program. As for opening day....``I don’t make those decisions,’’ Amaro said. ``We’ll find out how it goes when he starts throwing again.’’

Sheridan said: ``If his throwing goes well, he’ll get some mound work and a bullpen, then we’ll worry about games and schedule.’’

Asked what caused the issue in the first place, Sheridan said: ``Throwing caused it. We tried to get the inflammation out without an injection. It wasn’t happening, so we sent him to Philly.’’

Hamels is due back in Clearwater tonight.

To clarify: we reported yesterday morning that Hamels had inflammation in his left shoulder.

If you read between the lines... he's probably not going to be ready for the opener... the Phils would be foolish not to take an extremely cautious approach. They really have to make sure he doesn't push it just to make the opener. I mean who really cares if he debuts the first or 2nd week of the season. Remember the cliche - it's a marathon, not a sprint.

I don't care if he pitches the opener as long as he starts game 1 of the 2009 WS

Good news. Now, am I the only one dying for the WBC to finish so Jimmy and Victorino can come back to camp in one piece? The US players are dropping like flies. A few more got hurt they other day. Brian McCann had to play leftfield Sunday. They are competing with players from other countries that played during the winter and obviously are not in playing shape yet.

EZ - I agree 100%. The big problem with the WBC is that most MLB players are not ready for it. It would really make sense for them to have it in November instead, although I am sure the players wouldn't want to give up their off time.

The WBC is a joke. I keep trying to watch it, trying to care, but I keep thinking about the number of American players who simply said, "Uh...no thanks" (several of them Phillies, I might add), not to mention the number of teams that told their players "Uh...no way", and the fact that the US team, compared to every other team out there, is almost completely lifeless and disinterested, and I just cannot care. The only good thing about the WBC is that J-Roll has looked pretty good at the plate against better pitching than the Pirates AA rotation. But now, I agree, it is time for them to get back to Clearwater healthy and whole.

This could be the last WBC. I remember Venezuela shutting down Freddy Garcia in the first classic. Luis Ayala, a nice reliever for the Expos, got hurt in that classic also and hasn't been the same since. This year is ridiculous. We are talking all stars here.

Phew! Seems like Cole might need a bit more to get ready. I think the Phils/Hamels will do the right thing and not rush him. We want him to pitch the entire season and if that means missing 1 or 2 games in April...so be it. Will need him in October!?

Also, the mercy rule and the 70 or 85 pitch count are a joke. What is this, the Little League World Series? It got so bad that Davey Johnson said the other day that he may forfeit a game if the injuries continue.

And now Kevin Youkilis is lamenting that no one is showing up for the games...Well, who's brilliant idea was it to put the second round in 2 of the worst baseball markets in the country (Miami and San Diego)???? And I fail to understand why they can't play the preliminary 16-team round robin during the final week of Spring Training, when the players are pretty much ready to go, and play the rest of the tournament during the All Star Break, when there is nothing else going on in the American sporting world, and everyone is completely wrapped up in the baseball season. Oh yeah, and the players are at their peak.

There is no way this is the last WBC look at the ratings in Asia. The US players and fans have to get in line it's here for the long haul.

I agree it isn't going anywhere. The fervor for it in Asia and Latin America is unreal. But that doesn't change the fact that it is not ever going to sell in the U.S. until they make some serious, wholesale changes, because the way it is done right now just plain sucks.

The only problem with moving it to the All-Star break is that may be great for the MLB players but what have they done (specifically the US ones) to be catered? The Asian leagues start around the same time Dick-K's season obivously starts the same time and he is clearly prepared himself. Bobby Abreu has shown more hustle and heart than most of the US team.
