Hamels, Myers, Moyer ...

POSTED: Monday, September 29, 2008, 1:52 PM

Just heard that the Phillies have set up their rotation for the first three games of the National League division series against the Milwaukee Brewers: Cole Hamels will pitch Game 1 on Wednesday, Brett Myers will pitch Game 2 on Thursday and Jamie Moyer will pitch Game 3 on Saturday.

This isn't a surprise.

Hamels is their best pitcher, so they will pitch him Game 1. Myers dominated the Brewers earlier this month. And because the Brewers struggle against righthanded pitching, they probably didn't want the Brewers to face back-to-back lefthanders. The Phillies think they have a handle on Myers' recent pitching woes, but we'll know for sure Thursday. And Moyer goes Saturday in Game 3 in Milwaukee.

So what happens after that?

I think it depends on the situation. If the Phillies lead the best-of-five series, 2-1, you might see Joe Blanton on Sunday. If the Brewers lead, 2-1, the Phillies have to decide if they want to pitch Hamels on short rest or stick wtih Blanton and bring back Hamels at full strength for Game 5.

Don't know much about Milwaukee? Here's a taste.

The Brewers will not be able to mount much of an attack, unless they start Sabathia on 2-days rest. I have sabermetrically-inclined blog where I've calculated the odds of all the series, and the Phillies have a very good chance to take the series: http://sabermetrati.blogspot.com

Did you hear the moron Tim McCarver trying to jinx Brad Lidge on his 40 for 40 streak? McCarver is so jealous that his Muts won't be in it. That yang-yaw accent just kills me. On he went.. He repeated it 10x times..."Brad Lidge going for his 41st save." Get a life Tim.. we don't want you or your pathetic yang-yang hee-haw in Philly. As for the rotation, Come on Brett... Lights Out Time!

i think the Phils will be fine... They may sweep depending on what happens in GM2. The short rest could start to catch up to CC and Myers will be ok... I expect Phils in 3 or 4...

Let's hope Hamels learned something about keeping his emotions in check from the second game of the Mets double header.

remyy......I think Moyer should pitch games 1, 2 AND 3!. If any pitcher in the game can go on no rest, it would be Jamie! And he WAS playing toss in the dugout during Sunday's game, so he should be ready. LOL!

OK, Brett had two ineffective starts after cowboying up and pitching a shutout against the Brewers...on short rest. He'll be well-rested and raring to go for his matchup with CC in Game 2. We should see a great pitcher's duel that night.

You can't expect the Phils to sweep. That would be too easy and the Phils never do anything without melodrama. I'm hoping for a four game series with the Phils winning three. About ESPN: They still do have their favorite team in the playoffs--the Red Sox. If the Sox lose, they may not even want to broadcast the rest of the playoffs. Poor babies.....

Hamels will be on full rest for Game 5 if necessary. It would be Game 4 that would be short rest for him. Actually for Game 5, Hamels would have an extra days rest - as Game 5 would be on October 7th.

Bottom line, Phillies need to score some more runs for Hamels, preferably early AND we must to win Game 1. Lose Game 1 and it puts too much pressure on Myers, etc... To me, Game 1 is the key for the Phillies/the Series.
