Which Phillies ace would you want on the mound in a must-win game?
Roy Halladay
Cole Hamels
Cliff Lee

TORONTO -- His swollen right hand is wrapped and a large band-aid remains on his chin, so Cole Hamels is sticking with the fight stories. It's more glamorous than being hit by a line drive and a nasty infection.

"Well, I got really pissed at Chooch and I got him in the tunnel," Hamels said, laughing. "I missed him. He ducked and I hit the wall."

Hamels can smile about the injury that forced him to leave Thursday's game after four innings because it's not very serious. The Phillies cannot say for sure Hamels will start as scheduled Tuesday, but the lefthander is confident he can do it.

"I'm just not the type of guy," Hamels said, "that's going to shy away from wanting to play or would quit on the team."

Pitching coach Rich Dubee said it's even possible Hamels will skip his between-starts bullpen and still start Tuesday. It wouldn't be the worst thing for his heavy workload, Dubee said.

The decision to pull Hamels was Dubee's, along with the athletic training staff. Hamels said he wanted to stay in. "He wasn't too happy," Dubee said.

"But that's just not my call," Hamels said. "With the competitiveness we all have, I wanted to go out. I knew I was pitching well. I felt good. No matter how bad this hurts, if they didn't hit it back at me, I probably would have done all right."

Hamels said the liner off the bat of Adrian Gonzalez hit him square on the lower palm. It didn't catch any of the glove. Just flesh.

"That's why it's so bruised," Hamels said. "It hit solid meat. I had some stitching [from the baseball]."

The biggest concern will be Hamels' ability to field and defend himself on the mound from comebackers. Hamels said he does not believe that will be an issue.

"I guess it's what a catcher feels 24/7," Hamels said. "I don't envy them."

BOCOCK OUTRIGHTED. The Phillies freed a spot on the 40-man roster by outrighting minor-league shortstop Brian Bocock. It was Bocock's second outright, so he had the option of declining it and becoming a free agent. He did not, and will remain at triple-A Lehigh Valley.

It's a paper move that trims the 40-man roster to 39, providing the Phillies flexibility if they wish to add a player not on the 40-man roster.

ditto. We need little Roy to come back 100% healthy, even if it means late july/early august. Worely/KK can fill in adequately until Big Joe comes back and KK goes to the pen.

Anyone who's ever played the game has had stitch marks from baseballs embedded in there body somewhere. Nothing new here. It's happened to me both as a pitcher and as a hitter before. No big deal. Making $10-20 mil/year makes the pain/bruising go away real quick. It appears as though fans overreacted calling Hamels soft and Dubee overreacted removing Hamels from the game. Guess with all the injuries to the staff, they wanted to play it cautious. I'm sure Cole will pitch just fine next time out.

I didn't see Hamels telling Dubee he wanted to stay in the game and I didn't see Hamels looking unhappy about leaving the game. In the same situation, Cliff Lee would have waved off Dubee and the trainer and there would have been no visit to the mound. This is not the first time as a member of the Phillies Hamels has left the game in the 4th inning after being hit by a ball. It happened in April 2009 also. Hamels has also managed to hurt himself simply by reaching down to field a bunt.

again, i wonder how you could possibly know what a player says and feels based from watching on TV. i seem to remember hamels twisting his ankle in 2009. it is rather difficult to pitch when your ankle is in pain, but i forgot...hamels is a wuss and cant pitch through any pain. your comments are so insightful.

Questioning Cole's resolve and competitive spirit is a pretty popular activity around here. The guy has done nothing but pitch well and be a friggin' hero to this city in our first championship win in 25 years. He's one of the best pitchers in baseball right now and is young enough to keep doing it for 10 years. He's probably the most valuable player on the team. Get over yourselves everyone.

After listening to sports talk radio and reading the comments of "fans", it is obvious that a significant percentage of Phila fans are mindless nitwits. In Hamels, they have a legitimate Cy Young contender and a pitcher who has already helped the Phils win a world series championship. Yet, just like these knuckleheads and their moron fathers who booed Mike Schmidt, the greatest 3rd baseman of all time and a reliable slugger and local kid named Del Ennis, they accuse Hamels of being soft without knowing the extent of his injury. What a bunch of trash.
Has anybody noticed that Ryan Howard is starting to put up statistics like Dave Kingman? I sure hope he gets his act tgether and starts to play like he is capable of playing.

These people are crazy man. There seems to be a contingent of a few hundred depressed sociopaths who come on here and spew negativity in every article. We have the best record in baseball and 3 of the best 7-8 pitchers in all of baseball, yet a guy in that top 8 isn't good enough for them. I'll never understand how a city so accustomed to losing can hate on a guy who has been here for our ascension to dominance and has played a huge part in it. Its just ridiculous.

OK Freedom Fries (that handle just may be dumber than mine) - thanaks for your keen insight into the minds of two people who wouldn't give you the time of day. I guess you were close enough to the field to lip read what Hamels said because you sure couldn't see enough on TV to make that dumb of a statement. And while most people from Philly wear their hearts on their sleeves (what I love about us) I don't see it as a character flaw that he didn't frown and wave his arms to suit you.

Really Freedom Fries, you didn't see it so it must be so...He took a line-drive off the bat of the best hitter in the A.L. that was hit so hard you missed it if you blinked, and he's soft? He knocked his glove off for crying out loud, but you didn't see him 'fight' to stay in...nice to see a couple other posters, duckdwort and greenorangeredblueblood, show a little bit of sense. Dubee did the right thing by making sure something wasn't broken, or lord forbid a 3rd line drive get smacked back at Hamels should he have stayed in and do long-term damage. Philly fans never cease to amaze me, and not in a positive way.

The Phillies outrighted Bocock and by doing that created a roster spot. I think a move is coming soon. Mike Cameron?

Since when is it the media's job to cover up for Cole Hamels? Maybe since our local sportswriters became golf buddies with Charlie Manuel?

Think of how many times Cole Hamels has had to leave games early after rain delays. Tom Seaver could pitch after rain delays and so could Bob Gibson. Why not Cole?

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
