The Phillies said that lefthander Cole Hamels is expected to make his next start after X-rays were negative on a right hand contusion. Hamels left today's game with the visiting Boston Red Sox after the fourth inning with the injury.

He suffered the injury after being hit with a line drive off the bat of Adrian Gonzalez in the fourth inning. Hamels’ glove flew off, but he picked up the ball and threw Gonzalez out for the second out

Hamels was checked by the medical staff, stayed in the game and got Dustin Pedroia to ground out to third for the final out.

He was replaced to being the fifth inning by righthander David Herndon. Hamels pitched four shutout innings, allowing two hits.

IMO, Charlie and Dubee took that approach after sending guys to pitch with injuries, Blanton, Conteras, Oswalt and Madson, to later see them on their way to the DL. So they kind of overreacted a little. If Boston have won the first two games, they would have kept Hamels in the game. Remember, that was the second line drive hit his way. Imagine if another liner hit him in the same hand. You really can't blame them for taking him out.

Leslie Gudel just confirmed on DNL that Hamels wanted to continue but Dubee didn't want to take a chance. She said they were concerned in his ability to defend himself or to play defense because of the contusion and that they didn't know for sure if the first line drive, which he caught earlier, contributed to the injury as well. So there you have it. Oh, Amaro wasn’t complete sure if he would miss a start or not.
